You people recite this verse "You who believe, care for yourselves; he who goes astray cannot harm you when you are rightly-guided," and put it in its improper place. Khalid's version has: We heard the Prophet ﷺ say: When the people see a wrongdoer and do not prevent him, Allah will soon punish them all. Amr ibn Hushaym's version has: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: If acts of disobedience are done among any people and do not change them though the are able to do so, Allah will soon punish them all. Adu Dawud said: This tradition has also been transmitted by Abu Usamah and a group transmitters similar to the version narrated by Khalid. The version of Shu'bah has: "If acts of obedience are done among any people who are more numerous than those who do them...."  

أَنْ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ وَتَضَعُونَهَا عَلَى غَيْرِ مَوَاضِعِهَا { عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لاَ يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ } قَالَ عَنْ خَالِدٍ وَإِنَّا سَمِعْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوُا الظَّالِمَ فَلَمْ يَأْخُذُوا عَلَى يَدَيْهِ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابٍ وَقَالَ عَمْرٌو عَنْ هُشَيْمٍ وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَا مِنْ قَوْمٍ يُعْمَلُ فِيهِمْ بِالْمَعَاصِي ثُمَّ يَقْدِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْ يُغَيِّرُوا ثُمَّ لاَ يُغَيِّرُوا إِلاَّ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ بِعِقَابٍ  

“Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said: ‘O people, you recite this Verse – “O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you follow the (right) guidance no hurt can come to you from those who are in error.”[5:105] – but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘If people see some evil but do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.’” (One of the narrators) Abu Usamah repeated: "Indeed I heard that Messenger of Allah ﷺ say."  

قَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لاَ يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ} وَإِنَّا سَمِعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوُا الْمُنْكَرَ لاَ يُغَيِّرُونَهُ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابِهِ قَالَ أَبُو أُسَامَةَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ

If you follow the (right) guidance (and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)] no hurt can come to you from those who are in errorʿ (al-Ma'idah 5:105]. We heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿlf the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.ʿ

Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said:O people, you recite this verse: ʿO you who believe! Take care of your ownselves...ʿ (al-Ma’idah 5:105] until he reached the end of the verse. But if the people see an evildoer and do not stop him, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all. But I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “If the people...” And on another occasion he said: We heard the Messenger of Allah...  

قَالَقَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَؤُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ} [المائدة 105] حَتَّى أَتَى عَلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ أَلا وَإِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوْا الظَّالِمَ لَمْ يَأْخُذُوا عَلَى يَدَيْهِ أَوْشَكَ اللهُ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمْ بِعِقَابِهِ أَلا وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُول ُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى وَإِنَّا سَمِعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ  

0 people, you recite this verse but you quote it inappropriately: “O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you follow the (right) guidance [and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)] no hurt can come to you from those who are in errorʿ (al-Ma'idah 5:105]. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿIf the people see evil and do not denounce it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them ali.”  

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ وَتَضَعُونَهَا عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا وَضَعَهَا اللهُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ} سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوْا الْمُنْكَرَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَلَمْ يُنْكِرُوهُ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللهُ بِعِقَابِِ  

O people, you recite this verse: ʿO you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you follow the (right) guidance [and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)] no hurt can come to you from those who are in errorʿ [al-Ma’idah 5:105]. قَرَأَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ} قَالَ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَضَعُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَوْضِعِهَا أَلَا وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوَا الظَّالِمَ فَلَمْ يَأْخُذُوا عَلَى يَدَيْهِ أَوْ قَالَ الْمُنْكَرَ فَلَمْ يُغَيِّرُوهُ عَمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابِهِ»

عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ ؓ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَؤُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ وَتَضَعُونَهَا عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا وَضَعَهَا اللَّهُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ} إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوَا الْمُنْكَرَ فَلَمْ يُغَيِّرُوهُ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابٍ»

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ يَقُولُ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ} [المائدة 105] إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ الْقَوْمَ إِذَا رَأَوَا الْمُنْكَرَ فَلَمْ يُغَيِّرُوهُ عَمَّهُمُ اللهُ بِعِقَابٍ»  

"عن قيس بن أبى حازم قال: لَمَّا وَلِىَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ الله ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ! تَقْرَأُونَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ: {يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ} وَإِنَّكُمْ تَضَعُونَهَا عَلَى غَيْرِ مَوَاضِعِهَا، وإِنِّى سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوُا الْمُنْكَرَ وَلَا يُغَيِّرُونَهُ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمْ بِعِقَابِهِ".
