104. Sūrat al-Humazah

١٠٤۔ سُورَةُ الهُمَزَة

104.1 The slanderer, defamer and stingy shall be thrown into the blazing fire.

١٠٤۔١ مقطع في سُورَةُ الهُمَزَة

quran:104:1 – In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Woe to every scorner and mocker  

Woe (waylun: an expression implying chastisement) to every backbiter, ˹who is a˺ slanderer, frequently engaging in backbiting and slander, that is to say, defamation — this was revealed regarding those who slandered the Prophet (s) and the believers, the likes of Umayya b. Khalaf, al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra and others —
القرآن:١٠٤:١ – بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

وَيْلٌ لِكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُمَزَةٍ  

{ويل} كلمة عذاب أو وادٍ في جهنم {لكل هُمزة لُمزة} أي كثير الهمز واللمز، أي الغيبة نزلت فيمن كان يغتاب النبي ﷺ والمؤمنين كأُمية بن خلف والوليد بن المغيرة وغيرهما.
quran:104:2 –

Who collects wealth and ˹continuously˺ counts it.  

who amasses (read jama‘a or jamma‘a) wealth and counts it over, keeping count of it and stores it aside as a provision against the ˹unforeseeable˺ calamities of time.
القرآن:١٠٤:٢ –

الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ  

{الذي جمع} بالتخفيف والتشديد {مالا وعدده} أحصاه وجعله عدة لحوادث الدهر.
quran:104:3 –

He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.  

He thinks, in his ignorance, that his wealth will make him immortal, never to die.
القرآن:١٠٤:٣ –

يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ  

{يحسب} لجهله {أن ماله أخلده} جعله خالدا لا يموت.
quran:104:4 –

No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.  

Nay! — a repudiation — He will surely be flung (la-yunbadhanna is the response to an omitted oath), that is, he will be hurled down, into the Crusher, that crushes everything that is thrown into it.
القرآن:١٠٤:٤ –

كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنْبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ  

{كلا} ردع {لينبذن} جواب قسم محذوف، أي ليطرحن {في الحطمة} التي تحطم كل ما ألقي فيها.
quran:104:5 –

And what can make you know what is the Crusher?  

And what will show you, ˹what˺ will make known to you, what the Crusher is?
القرآن:١٠٤:٥ –

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ  

{وما أدراك} أعلمك {ما الحطمة}.
quran:104:6 –

It is the fire of Allah, ˹eternally˺ fueled,  

˹It is˺ the fire of God, kindled, set ablaze,
القرآن:١٠٤:٦ –

نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ  

{نار الله الموقدة} المسعرة.
quran:104:7 –

Which mounts directed at the hearts.  

which peers over the hearts, to burn them — the pain of which is much more severe than any other because of the delicate nature ˹of the heart˺.
القرآن:١٠٤:٧ –

الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ  

{التي تطَّلع} تشرف {على الأفئدة} القلوب فتحرقها وألمها أشد من ألم غيرها للطفها.
quran:104:8 –

Indeed, Hellfire will be closed down upon them  

Lo! it will be closed in (mu’sada or mūsada) on them (‘alayhim, ‘on them’: the plural pronoun takes into account the ˹plural˺ import of kull, ‘every’),
القرآن:١٠٤:٨ –

إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِمْ مُؤْصَدَةٌ  

{إنها عليهم} جمع الضمير رعاية لمعنى كل {مؤصدة} بالهمز والواو بدله، مطبقة.
quran:104:9 –

In extended columns.  

in outstretched (mumaddadatin is an adjective qualifying the preceding ˹noun, ‘amadin˺) columns (read ‘umudin or ‘amadin), and will therefore be inside the columns. Meccan, consisting of 5 verses.
القرآن:١٠٤:٩ –

فِي عَمَدٍ مُمَدَّدَةٍ  

{في عمد} بضم الحرفين وبفتحهما {ممددة} صفة لما قبله فتكون النار داخل العمد.
