Saʿd said, "I used to pray with them a prayer similar to that of Messenger of Allah ﷺ (the prayer of Zuhr and ʿAsr) reducing nothing from them. I used to prolong the first two rakʿat and shorten the last two rakʿat." ʿUmar said to Saʿd "This was what we thought about you."

سَعْدٌ كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي بِهِمْ صَلاَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلاَتَىِ الْعَشِيِّ لاَ أَخْرِمُ عَنْهَا أَرْكُدُ فِي الأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الأُخْرَيَيْنِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ ذَلِكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ

The people of Kufa complained to Umar b. Khattab about Sa'd and they made a mention of his prayer. 'Umar sent for him. He came to him. He ('Umar) told him that the people had found fault with his prayer. He said: I lead them in prayer in accorance with the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I make no decrease in it. I make them stand for a longer time in the first two (rak'ahs) and shorten it in the last two. Upon this 'Umar remarked: This is what I deemed of thee, O Abu Ishaq.

إِنِّي لأُصَلِّي بِهِمْ صَلاَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا أَخْرِمُ عَنْهَا إِنِّي لأَرْكُدُ بِهِمْ فِي الأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الأُخْرَيَيْنِ فَقَالَ ذَاكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ

[AI] The people of Kufa complained to Umar about Saad and said, "He does not pray well." He said: Umar asked him, and he said, "I lead them in prayer as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed; I make the first two longer and shorten the last two." He said, "That is what I thought of you, O Abu Ishaq."

شَكَا أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ سَعْدًا إِلَى عُمَرَ، فَقَالُوا: لَا يُحْسِنُ يُصَلِّي. قَالَ: فَسَأَلَهُ عُمَرُ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُصَلِّي بِهِمْ صَلَاةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، أَرْكُدُ فِي الْأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ. قَالَ: ذَلِكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ، يَا أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ.

[AI] The people of Kufa complained to Umar about Sad, saying, "He does not pray well." Umar mentioned that to him, and he said, "As for the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I used to lead them in prayer, making the first two longer and shortening the last two." He said, "That is what I thought of you, O Abu Ishaq."

شَكَا أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ سَعْدًا إِلَى عُمَرَ، فَقَالُوا: لَا يُحْسِنُ يُصَلِّي. فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرُ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: أَمَّا صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَدْ كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي بِهِمْ، أَرْكُدُ فِي الْأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ. فَقَالَ: ذَاكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ يَا أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ.

"Some of the peole of Al-Khufah complained about Sa'd to 'Umar. They said: 'By Allah, he does not pray properly.' He said: 'I lead them in prayer as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did, and I do not deviate from that. I take my time in the first two rak'ahs and make the other two shorter.' He (Umar) said: 'That is what I thought about you.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1003)

«وَقَعَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ فِي سَعْدٍ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ» فَقَالُوا وَاللهِ مَا يُحْسِنُ الصَّلَاةَ فَقَالَ «أَمَّا أَنَا فَإِنِّي أُصَلِّي صَلَاةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَا أَخْرِمُ مِنْهَا أَرْكُدُ فِي الْأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ» قَالَ «ذَاكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ»

"عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ: شَكَا أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ أَنَّ سَعْدًا لَا يُحْسِنُ أَنْ يُصَلِّىَ فَذَكَرَ عُمَرُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ: أَمَّا أَنَا فَكُنْتُ أُصَلِّى بِهِمْ صَلَاةَ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ لَا أَخْرِمُ () عَنْهَا أَرْكُدُ ( ) في الأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَحْذِفُ ( * *) في الأُخْريَيْن، فَقَالَ عُمَر: ذَاكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ".
