Ibn ʿUmar intended to perform Hajj in the year when Al-Hajjaj attacked Ibn Az-Zubair. Somebody said to Ibn ʿUmar, "There is a danger of an impending war between them." Ibn ʿUmar said, "Verily, in Messenger of Allah ﷺ you have a good example. (And if it happened as you say) then I would do the same as Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done. I make you witness that I have decided to perform ʿUmra." Then he set out and when he reached Al-Baida', he said, "The ceremonies of both Hajj and ʿUmra are similar. I make you witness that I have made Hajj compulsory for me along with ʿUmra." He drove (to Mecca) a Hadi which he had bought from (a place called) Qudaid and did not do more than that. He did not slaughter the Hadi or finish his Ihram, or shave or cut short his hair till the day of slaughtering the sacrifices (10th Dhul-Hijja). Then he slaughtered his Hadi and shaved his head and considered the first Tawaf (of Safa and Marwa) as sufficient for Hajj and ʿUmra. Ibn ʿUmar said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same." Ibn ʿUmar intended to perform Hajj in the year of the Hajj of Al-Harawriya during the rule of Ibn Az- Zubair. Some people said to him, "It is very likely that there will be a fight among the people, and we are afraid that they might prevent you (from performing Hajj)." He replied, "Verily, in Messenger of Allah ﷺ there is a good example for you (to follow). In this case I would do the same as he had done. I make you witness that I have intended to perform ʿUmra." When he reached Al-Baida', he said, "The conditions for both Hajj and ʿUmra are the same. I make you witness that I have intended to perform Hajj along with ʿUmra." After that he took a garlanded Hadi (to Mecca) which he bought (on the way). When he reached (Mecca), he performed Tawaf of the Kaʿba and of Safa (and Marwa) and did not do more than that. He did not make legal for himself the things which were illegal for a Muhrim till it was the Day of Nahr (sacrifice), when he had his head shaved and slaughtered (the sacrifice) and considered sufficient his first Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa), as a (Saʿi) for his Hajj and ʿUmra both. He then said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to do like that."

There is a state of war between people and we fear that they would detain you, whereupon he ('Abdullah b. Umar) said:" Verily in the Messenger of Allah there is a model pattern for you." I would do as Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. I call you as witness that I have undertaken to perform 'Umra. He then set out until, when he reached the rear side of al-Baida', he said: There is one command both for Hajj and Umra. so bear witness. Ibn Rumh said: I call you as witness that I have undertaken to perform my Hajjalong with my Umra (i. e. I am performing both of them as Qiran), and he offered the sacrifice of animals which he had bought at Qudaid. He then proceeded pronouncing Talbiya for both of them together until he reached Mecca, He circumambulated the House. and (ran) between al-Safa' and al-Marwa and made no addition to it. He neither sacrificed the animal, nor got his head shaved, nor got his hair clipped, nor did he make anything lawful which was unlawful (due to Ihram) until it was the Day of Sacrifice (10th of Dhu'l-Hijja). He then offered sacrifice, and got his hair cut, and saw that circumambulation of Hajj and 'Umra was complete with the first circumambulation. Ibn 'Umar said: This is how Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done.

ابن حبّان:٣٩٩٨أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ مَوْهَبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ أَرَادَ الْحَجَّ عَامَ نَزَلَ الْحَجَّاجُ بِابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ كَائِنٌ فِيهِمْ قِتَالٌ وَإِنَّا نَخَافُ أَنْ يَصُدُّوكَ فَقَالَ

{لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ} إِذًا أَصْنَعُ كَمَا صَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكُمْ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَبْتُ عَمْرَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِظَاهِرِ الْبَيْدَاءِ قَالَ مَا شَأْنُ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ إِلَّا شَانٌ وَاحِدٌ أُشْهِدُكُمْ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَبْتُ حَجًّا مَعَ عُمْرَتِي وَأَهْدَى هَدْيًا اشْتَرَاهُ بِقُدَيْدٍ فَانْطَلَقَ يُهِلُّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ فَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَبِالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ وَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَلَمْ يَنْحَرْ وَلَمْ يَحْلِقْ وَلَمْ يَقْصُرْ وَلَمْ يَحِلَّ مِنْ شَيْءٍ أَحْرَمَ مِنْهُ حَتَّى كَانَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ نَحَرَ وَحَلَقَ ثُمَّ رَأَى أَنْ قَدْ قَضَى طَوَافَ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ بِطَوَافِ الْأَوَّلِ وَقَالَ كَذَلِكَ فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ»

There is a state of war between people and we fear that they would detain you, whereupon he ('Abdullah b. Umar) said:" Verily in the Messenger of Allah there is a model pattern for you." I would do as Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. I call you as witness that I have undertaken to perform 'Umra. He then set out until, when he reached the rear side of al-Baida', he said: There is one command both for Hajj and Umra. so bear witness. Ibn Rumh said: I call you as witness that I have undertaken to perform my Hajjalong with my Umra (i. e. I am performing both of them as Qiran), and he offered the sacrifice of animals which he had bought at Qudaid. He then proceeded pronouncing Talbiya for both of them together until he reached Mecca, He circumambulated the House. and (ran) between al-Safa' and al-Marwa and made no addition to it. He neither sacrificed the animal, nor got his head shaved, nor got his hair clipped, nor did he make anything lawful which was unlawful (due to Ihram) until it was the Day of Sacrifice (10th of Dhu'l-Hijja). He then offered sacrifice, and got his hair cut, and saw that circumambulation of Hajj and 'Umra was complete with the first circumambulation. Ibn 'Umar said: This is how Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done. (Using translation from Muslim 1230d)

لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ إِذًا أَصْنَعُ كَمَا صَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكُمْ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَبْتُ عُمْرَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِظَاهِرِ الْبَيْدَاءِ قَالَ «مَا شَأْنُ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ إِلَّا وَاحِدٌ أَشْهَدُ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَبْتُ حَجًّا مَعَ عُمْرَتِي وَأَهْدَى هَدْيًا اشْتَرَاهُ بِقُدَيْدٍ ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَ يُهِلُّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ فَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَبِالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ وَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَلَمْ يَنْحَرْ وَلَمْ يَحْلِقْ وَلَمْ يُقَصَّرْ وَلَمْ يَحْلِلْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ حَرُمَ مِنْهُ حَتَّى كَانَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ فَنَحَرَ وَحَلَقَ وَرَأَى أَنْ قَدْ قَضَى طَوَافَ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ بِطَوَافِهِ الْأَوَّلِ» وَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ كَذَلِكَ فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

Ibn ʿUmar intended to perform Hajj in the year when Al-Hajjaj attacked Ibn Az-Zubair. Somebody said to Ibn ʿUmar, "There is a danger of an impending war between them." Ibn ʿUmar said, "Verily, in Messenger of Allah ﷺ you have a good example. (And if it happened as you say) then I would do the same as Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done. I make you witness that I have decided to perform ʿUmra." Then he set out and when he reached Al-Baida', he said, "The ceremonies of both Hajj and ʿUmra are similar. I make you witness that I have made Hajj compulsory for me along with ʿUmra." He drove (to Mecca) a Hadi which he had bought from (a place called) Qudaid and did not do more than that. He did not slaughter the Hadi or finish his Ihram, or shave or cut short his hair till the day of slaughtering the sacrifices (10th Dhul-Hijja). Then he slaughtered his Hadi and shaved his head and considered the first Tawaf (of Safa and Marwa) as sufficient for Hajj and ʿUmra. Ibn ʿUmar said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same." البيهقي:٨٧٨٢أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْعَلَوِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو حَامِدِ بْنُ الشَّرْقِيِّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى وَأَبُو الْأَزْهَرِ وَحَمْدَانُ السُّلَمِيُّ قَالُوا ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أنبأ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْر وَعَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي رَوَّادٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ ؓ يُرِيدُ الْحَجَّ زَمَنَ نَزَلِ الْحَجَّاجُ بِابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ كَائِنٌ بَيْنَهُمْ قِتَالٌ وَإِنَّا نَخَافُ أَنْ يَصُدُّوكَ فَقَالَ

{لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ} [الأحزاب 21] إِذَنْ أَصْنَعُ كَمَا صَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أُشْهِدُكُمْ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَبْتُ عُمْرَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِظَهْرِ الْبَيْدَاءِ قَالَ مَا شَأْنُ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ إِلَّا وَاحِدٌ أُشْهِدُكُمْ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَبْتُ حَجًّا مَعَ عُمْرَتِي وَأُهْدِي هَدْيًا اشْتَرَاهُ بِقُدَيْدٍ فَانْطَلَقَ حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ فَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَبَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ وَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَلَمْ يَنْحَرْ وَلَمْ يَحْلِقْ وَلَمْ يُقَصِّرْ وَلَمْ يَحْلِلْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ كَانَ حُرِمَ مِنْهُ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ نَحَرَ وَحَلَقَ ثُمَّ رَأَى أَنْ قَدْ قَضَى طَوَافَهُ لِلْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ بِطَوَافِهِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ
