There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came out bewildered pulling his garment, and I was in his company at Medina. He prayed two rak'ahs and stood for a long time in them. He then departed and the sun became bright. He then said: There are the signs by means of which Allah, the Exalted, produces dread (in His servants). When you see anything of this nature, then pray as you are praying a fresh obligatory prayer.

كُسِفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ فَزِعًا يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَأَطَالَ فِيهِمَا الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَانْجَلَتْ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ الآيَاتُ يُخَوِّفُ اللَّهُ بِهَا فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهَا فَصَلُّوا كَأَحْدَثِ صَلاَةٍ صَلَّيْتُمُوهَا مِنَ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ

"The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he rushed out, dragging his cloak until he came to the masjid. He continued leading us in prayer until the eclipse ended. When it ended, he said: 'People claim that the eclipse of the sun and moon only happen when a great man dies, but that is not so. Eclipses of the sun and the moon do not happen for the death or birth of anyone, but they are signs from Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime. When Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, manifests Himself to anything of His creation, it humbles itself before Him, so if you see that then pray like the last obligatory prayer you did before that.'"

"There was an eclipse of the sun and at the time we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Al-Madinah. He rushed out dragging his garment and prayed two rak'ahs, which he made lengthy. The end of his prayer coincided with the end of the eclipse. He praised and glorified Allah (SWT), then he said: 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT), and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see anything of that, then pray like the last obligatory prayer you did before that.'"

The Prophet ﷺ came rushing out to the masjid one day when the sun eclipsed, and he prayed until the eclipse ended, then he said: "The people of Jahilliyyah used to say that eclipses of the sun and the moon only happened when some great man on earth died. But eclipses of the sun and the moon do not happen for the death or birth of anyone. Rather they are two of the creations of Allah (SWT) and Allah (SWT) causes to happen in His creation what He wills. Whichever of them becomes eclipsed, pray until it is over or Allah (SWT) causes something to happen."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ خَرَجَ يَوْمًا مُسْتَعْجِلاً إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَقَدِ انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَصَلَّى حَتَّى انْجَلَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لاَ يَنْخَسِفَانِ إِلاَّ لِمَوْتِ عَظِيمٍ مِنْ عُظَمَاءِ أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ وَإِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لاَ يَنْخَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَكِنَّهُمَا خَلِيقَتَانِ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ يُحْدِثُ اللَّهُ فِي خَلْقِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ فَأَيُّهُمَا انْخَسَفَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يَنْجَلِيَ أَوْ يُحْدِثَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا

“The sun was eclipsed at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he came out alarmed, dragging his lower garment, until he reached the mosque. He continued to perform prayer until the eclipse was over, then he said: ‘Some people claim that the sun and moon only become eclipsed because of the death of a great leader. That is not so. The sun and the moon do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. When Allah manifests Himself to anything in His creation, it humbles itself before Him.’”

[AI] The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He used to pray two units of prayer, then ask, then pray two units of prayer, then ask, until the sun became clear. He said, "There are people among the people of ignorance who say or claim that when the sun or the moon is eclipsed, it is only due to the death of a great person from the leaders of the people of the Earth. However, that is not the case. Rather, they are two creations among the creations of Allah. When Allah manifests Himself to something from His creation, it humbles itself before Him."

[AI] The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so he went out and prayed two units of prayer and asked for forgiveness. Then he prayed two more units of prayer and asked for forgiveness, until the eclipse was over. He then said, "Some people claim that when the sun or moon is eclipsed, it is a sign of the death of a great person among the nobles. But that is not the case. Both the sun and the moon are created beings from the creation of Allah. When Allah manifests Himself to something from His creation, it humbles itself before Him."

[AI] The sun set, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and performed two units of prayer. He recited in them for a long time until the twilight disappeared. He then said, "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, by which He frightens His servants. So when you see that, pray as if you are praying the most recent prayer you have performed from the obligatory prayers."

[AI] The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , so he prayed two units of prayer until the sun became clear again. He then said, "Some people used to say in the time of ignorance that if one of them was eclipsed, it was only due to the death of a great leader from the noble people of the earth. But this is not the case, rather they are two signs from the signs of Allah's creation. Therefore, when you witness this, pray." This was narrated by Harith bin Umayr al-Basri from Ayyub from Abu Qilabah from Nu'man bin Bashir. He prayed two units of prayer and inquired about it until it became clear. This was also narrated by Hasan from Nu'man bin Bashir, excluding these words that may imply something opposing, and excluding the wording of manifestation.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ مُسْتَعْجِلًا يَجُرُّ رِدَاءَهُ حَتَّى أَتَى الْمَسْجِدَ وَقَدِ انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَصَلَّى حَتَّى انْجَلَتْ وَقَالَ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْخَسِفَانِ إِلَّا لِمَوْتِ عَظِيمٍ مِنْ عُظَمَاءِ الْأَرْضِ وَإِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْخَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَكِنَّهُمَا خَلْقَانِ مِنْ خَلْقِ اللهِ ﷻ وَيُحْدِثُ اللهُ فِي خَلْقِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ فَأَيُّهُمَا انْخَسَفَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يَنْجَلِيَ أَوْ يُحْدِثَ اللهُ ﷻ أَمْرًا هَذَا أَشْبَهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَحْفُوظًا وَقَدْ قِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ عَنْ قَبِيصَةَ الْهِلَالِيِّ

"إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ والْقَمَرَ لا ينْكسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَد ولا لِحَيَاتِه، وَلَكِنَّهما آيَتَانِ مِنْ آياتِ الله يُخوِّفُ بهما عِبَادَه فَإِذَا رأَيتُم ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا كَأَحْدَثِ صَلاةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ صَلَّيتُمُوها".

"إِنَّ رجالًا يزعمون أَن الشمسَ والقمرَ إِذا انكسف واحدٌ منهما فإِنما ينكسفُ لموتِ عظيمٍ، وليس كذلك، ولكنَّهما خلقان من خلقِ اللَّهِ، فإِذا تجَّلى اللَّهُ لِشَىْءٍ من خلقِهِ خَشَعَ له".

"إِنَّ ناسًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ الشَّمْسَ والْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْكسِفَانِ إِلا لموتِ عظيم من العظماءِ، وليسَ كذلك، إِنَّ الشمسَ والقمرَ لا ينكسفان لموت أَحد ولا لحياته، ولكنَّهما آيتان من آياتِ اللَّه ﷻ، إِنَّ اللَّه إِذَا بَدَا لِشَيْءٍ من خلقه خشعَ، فإِذا رأَيتُم ذلك فَصَلُّوا كأَحدثِ صلاةٍ صليتموها من المكتوبةِ" .

" عَنْ قُبَيْصَةَ بْنِ مُخَارِقٍ: أَنَّ الشَّمْسَ انْكَسَفَتْ فَصَلَّى النَّبِىُّ ﷺ رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ حَتَّى انْجَلَتْ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يُخْسَفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَكِنَّهُمَا خَلْقَانِ مِنْ خَلْقِ اللهِ، ويُحْدِثُ اللهُ فِى خَلْقِهِ مَا شَاءَ، ثُمَّ إِنَّ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى - إِذَا تَجَلَّى لِشَىْءٍ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ خَشَعَ لَهُ فَأَيُّهُمَا انْكَسَفَتْ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تَنْجَلِىَ أَوْ يُحْدِث اللهُ أَمْرًا".

"عَنِ النعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِير قَالَ: انْكَسَفت الشَّمسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رسُولِ الله ﷺ فَكَانَ يُصَلِّى رَكعَتَيْنِ وَيُسَلِّمُ، ويُصَلِّى رَكعَتَيْنِ وَيُسَلِّمُ حَتَّى انْجَلَتْ، فقَالَ: إِنَّ رِجَالًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ إِذَا انكَسَفَا أَوْ أَحَدُهُمَا إِنَّمَا يَنْكَسِفُ لِمَوْتِ عَظِيمٍ مِنَ الْعظماء وليس كَذَلِكَ وَلَكِنَّهُما خَلْقَانِ مِنْ خَلْقِ الله، فَإِذَا تَجَلَّى الله لِشَئٍ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ خَشَعَ لَهُ".
