33.45 The words of the prophets saws: "Deeds are but with intentions" which includes fighting and other deeds

٣٣۔٤٥ باب قَوْلِهِ ﷺ " إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّةِ." وَأَنَّهُ يَدْخُلُ فِيهِ الْغَزْوُ وَغَيْرُهُ مِنَ الأَعْمَالِ

Intentions are the basis for the judgement of actions upon them

muslim:1907aʿAbdullāh b. Maslamah b. Qaʿnab > Mālik > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm > ʿAlqamah b. Waqqāṣ > ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Deeds are ˹judged based˺ by ˹their˺ intention, and a person ˹is granted the due˺ for what they intended. So whoever had emigrated ˹for the sake of˺ Allah and His Messenger then his emigration is ˹earned for the sake of˺ Allah and His Messenger; and whoever had emigrated for ˹the sake of˺ worldly benefits or for ˹the sake of˺ marrying a woman, the ˹due˺ of his emigration ˹is earned˺ for what he emigrated for."  

مسلم:١٩٠٧aحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنِ قَعْنَبٍ؛ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ؛ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ؛ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ؛ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ وَقَّاصٍ؛ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّةِ وَإِنَّمَا لاِمْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى۔ فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ؛ وَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ لِدُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا أَوِ امْرَأَةٍ يَتَزَوَّجُهَا، فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ۔»

It has been narrated through a different chain of transmitters on the authority of Sufyan who said that he heard 'Umar b. al-Khattab relate (this tradition) from the Prophet ﷺ while he was delivering a sermon from the pulpit.  

مسلم:١٩٠٧bحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحِ بْنِ الْمُهَاجِرِ أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الْعَتَكِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ يَعْنِي الثَّقَفِيَّ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ غِيَاثٍ وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ كُلُّهُمْ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ بِإِسْنَادِ مَالِكٍ وَمَعْنَى حَدِيثِهِ وَفِي حَدِيثِ سُفْيَانَ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يُخْبِرُ
