I married a woman during the lifetime of Messenger of Allah (may peace be. upon him). I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whereupon he said: Jabir, have you married? I said: Yes. He said: A virgin or one previously marrried? I said: With due previously married, whereupon he said: Why did you not marry a virgin with whom you could sport? I said: Messenger of Allah, I have sisters; I was afraid that she might intervene between me and them, whereupon he said: Well and good, if it is so. A woman is married for four reasons, for her religion, her property, her status, her beauty, so you should choose one with religion. May your hands cleave to dust.

تَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَقِيتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا جَابِرُ تَزَوَّجْتَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ بِكْرٌ أَمْ ثَيِّبٌ قُلْتُ ثَيِّبٌ قَالَ فَهَلاَّ بِكْرًا تُلاَعِبُهَا قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي أَخَوَاتٍ فَخَشِيتُ أَنْ تَدْخُلَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُنَّ قَالَ فَذَاكَ إِذًا إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ تُنْكَحُ عَلَى دِينِهَا وَمَالِهَا وَجَمَالِهَا فَعَلَيْكَ بِذَاتِ الدِّينِ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكَ

Jabir bin ‘Abd Allah said “The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ said to me “Did you marry?” I said “Yes”. He again said “Virgin or Non Virgin (woman previously married)?” I said “Non Virgin”. He said “Why (did you) not (marry) a virgin with whom you could sport and she could sport with you.

لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَتَزَوَّجْتَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ بِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا فَقُلْتُ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ أَفَلاَ بِكْرٌ تُلاَعِبُهَا وَتُلاَعِبُكَ

It was narrated that Jabir said: "I got married then I came to the Prophet and he said: 'Have you got married, O Jabir?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'To a virgin or to a previously married woman?' I said: 'To a previously married woman.' He said: 'Why not a virgin, so you could play with her and she could play with you?'"

تَزَوَّجْتُ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَتَزَوَّجْتَ يَا جَابِرُ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ بِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا فَقُلْتُ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ فَهَلاَّ بِكْرًا تُلاَعِبُهَا وَتُلاَعِبُكَ

It was narrated from Jabir that he married a woman at the time of the Messenger of Allah, and the Prophet met him and said: "Have you got married, O Jabir?" He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'A virgin or a previously-married woman?' I said: 'A previously-married woman.' He said: 'Why not a virgin who would play with you?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have sisters, and I did not want her to come between them and I.' He said: 'That's better then. A woman may be married for her religious commitment, her wealth or her beauty. You should choose the one who is religiously committed, may your hands be rubbed with dust (may you prosper).'"

[AI] I was with the Prophet ﷺ and he said, "O so-and-so, did you get married?" He replied, "No." The Prophet then asked me, "Did you get married?" I said, "Yes." He asked, "Did you marry a virgin or a previously married woman?" I replied, "Not a virgin, but a previously married woman." The Prophet then said, "So why don't you marry a virgin so that she can bite you and you can bite her?"

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «يَا فُلَانُ تَزَوَّجْتَ؟» فَقَالَ لَا فَقَالَ لِي «تَزَوَّجْتَ؟» فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ «أَبِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا؟» قُلْتُ لَا بَلْ ثَيِّبًا فَقَالَ «فَهَلَّا بِكْرًا تَعَضُّهَا وَتَعَضُّكَ»

It was narrated that Jabir said: "I got married then I came to the Prophet and he said: 'Have you got married, O Jabir?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'To a virgin or to a previously married woman?' I said: 'To a previously married woman.' He said: 'Why not a virgin, so you could play with her and she could play with you?'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3219)

It was narrated that Jabir said: "I got married then I came to the Prophet and he said: 'Have you got married, O Jabir?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'To a virgin or to a previously married woman?' تَزَوَّجْتُ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «تَزَوَّجْتَ يَا جَابِرُ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «بِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا؟» فَقُلْتُ لَا بَلْ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ «فَهَلَّا بِكْرًا تُلَاعِبُهَا وَتُلَاعِبُكَ»

[AI] We were walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he asked me, "Did you get married after your father?" I said, "Yes." He asked, "Did you marry Ayyub or Bakr?" I said, "Ayyub." He said, "Why didn't you marry Bakr? She would make you laugh and you would make her laugh, and she would play with you and you would play with her."

كُنَّا نَسِيرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِي «أَتَزَوَّجْتَ بَعْدَ أَبِيكَ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَثَيِّبًا أَمْ بِكْرًا؟» قُلْتُ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ «فَهَلَّا تَزَوَّجْتَ بِكْرًا تُضَاحِكُكَ وَتُضَاحِكُهَا وَتُلَاعِبُكَ وَتُلَاعِبُهَا»
