That the Prophet ﷺ said: "Shall I not inform you of the best of the people ? A man who takes hold of the reins of his horse in Allah's cause. Shall I not inform you of the one who comes after him ? The man who secludes himself from the people with a small group of sheep of his, thereby fulfilling Allah's right. Shall I not inform you about the worst of the people ? A man who is asked by (the Name of) Allah, but not given by Him."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ أَلاَ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ رَجُلٌ مُمْسِكٌ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَلاَ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَتْلُوهُ رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي غُنَيْمَةٍ لَهُ يُؤَدِّي حَقَّ اللَّهِ فِيهَا أَلاَ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ رَجُلٌ يُسْأَلُ بِاللَّهِ وَلاَ يُعْطِي بِهِ

"Shall I not tell you of the best of the people in status?" We said: "Yes. O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "A man who rides his horse in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, until he dies or is killed. Shall I not tell you of the one who comes after him (in status)?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He said; "A man who withdraws to a mountain pass and establishes Salah, and pays Zakah, and keeps away from the evil of people. Shall I not tell you of the worst of people?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "The one who asks for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, but does not give (when he is asked) for His sake,"

"Shall I not tell you of the best of the people in status?" We said: "Yes. O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "A man who rides his horse in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, until he dies or is killed. Shall I not tell you of the one who comes after him (in status)?" "Shall I not tell you of the best of the people in status?" We said: "Yes. O Messenger of Allah!" [AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I inform you of the best of creation?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "A man who holds the reins of his horse for the sake of Allah, and whenever it becomes restless, he calms it down. Shall I inform you of one who comes after him?" They said, "Yes." He said, "A man in a group of his sheep who establishes prayer and pays the Zakat. Shall I inform you of the worst of creation?" They said, "Yes." He said, "One who is asked by Allah, but does not give."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ الْبَرِيَّةِ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ كُلَّمَا كَانَتْ هَيْعَةٌ اسْتَوَى عَلَيْهِ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَلِيهِ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ رجُلٌ فِي ثُلَّةٍ مِنْ غَنَمِهِ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ الْبَرِيَّةِ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ الَّذِي يُسْأَلُ بِاللهِ وَلَا يُعْطِي بِهِ

[AI] "The Prophet ﷺ said: Shall I not inform you about the best of people in rank? A man who takes hold of the reins of his horse in the way of Allah. Shall I not inform you about a rank that comes after that? It is a man who lives in seclusion with his sheep or booty, fulfilling the prayer, paying the Zakat, and worshiping Allah alone without associating anything with Him."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلَةً رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلَةً بَعْدَهُ؟ رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي غَنَمٍ أَوْ غُنَيْمَةٍ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَيَعْبُدُ اللهَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا

Yahya related to me from Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Mamar al- Ansari that Ata ibn Yasar said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I tell you who has the best degree among people? A man who takes the rein of his horse to do jihad in the way of Allah. Shall I tell you who has the best degree among people after him? A man who lives alone with a few sheep, performs the prayer, pays the zakat, and worships Allah without associating anything with him."

أَنَّهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَلاَ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلاً رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ يُجَاهِدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَلاَ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلاً بَعْدَهُ رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي غُنَيْمَتِهِ يُقِيمُ الصَّلاَةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَيَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ لاَ يُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not tell you about the best of people in status?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "A man who takes the reins of his horse for the sake of Allah until he is killed or dies. And shall I not tell you about the one who comes after him? A man who isolates himself in a mountain, establishing prayer and giving charity, and he testifies that there is no god but Allah."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلَةً؟» قَالُوا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ أَوْ يَمُوتَ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَلِيهِ؟ رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي شِعْبٍ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَيَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ»

"Shall I not tell you of the best of the people in status?" We said: "Yes. O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "A man who rides his horse in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, until he dies or is killed. Shall I not tell you of the one who comes after him (in status)?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He said; "A man who withdraws to a mountain pass and establishes Salah, and pays Zakah, and keeps away from the evil of people. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَهُمْ جُلُوسٌ فِي مَجْلِسٍ فقَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلًا»؟ فَقُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِرَأْسِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى عُقِرَتْ أَوْ يُقْتَلَ أَفَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَلِيهِ»؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «امْرُؤٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي شِعْبٍ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَيَعْتَزِلُ شُرُورَ النَّاسِ أَفَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ»؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «الَّذِي يُسْأَلُ بِاللَّهِ وَلَا يُعْطِي بِهِ»

[AI] "That the Prophet ﷺ went out while they were sitting, and he said, 'Shall I not inform you about the best of people in standing (in rank)?' They said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'A man who holds the reins of his horse, either in the cause of Allah or when it is killed.' He said, 'Shall I inform you about the one who comes after him?' They said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'A man who isolates himself in a mountain, establishing the prayer and giving the Zakah, and he keeps away from the evil of people.' He said, 'Shall I inform you about the worst of people?' They said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'The one who is asked by Allah but does not give.'"

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَرَجَ وَهُمْ جُلُوسٌ فَقَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلَةً؟» قَالُوا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «رَجُلٌ يُمْسِكُ بِرَأْسِ فَرَسِهِ» أَوْ قَالَ «فَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَوْ يُقْتَلُ» قَالَ «أَفَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَلِيهِ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «امْرُؤٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي شِعْبٍ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَيَعْتَزِلُ شُرُورَ النَّاسِ أَفَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «الَّذِي يُسْأَلُ بِاللهِ وَلَا يُعْطِي بِهِ»

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet, ﷺ , he said: "Shall I not inform you about the best of people? Indeed, among the best of people is a man who holds onto the reins of his horse in the cause of Allah. Shall I inform you about the one who follows him? It is a man who withdraws to his flock and fulfills the rights of Allah regarding them. And shall I inform you about the worst of people? It is a man who is asked by Allah, yet he does not give."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ؟ إِنَّ مِنْ خَيْرِ النَّاسِ رَجُلٌ مُمْسِكٌ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَتْلُوهُ؟ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي غَنَمِهِ يُؤَدِّي حَقَّ اللهِ فِيهَا وَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ؟ رَجُلٌ يُسْأَلُ بِاللهِ وَلَا يُعْطِي بِهِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not inform you about the best of people, a man?" They said, "Yes." So he pointed with his hand towards the east and said, "A man who leads his horse in the cause of Allah, waiting to be martyred or have envy for him." He then said, "Shall I not inform you about someone who is the best of people after him?" They said, "Yes." So he pointed with his hand towards the Hijaz and said, "A man in his flock, who establishes prayer, gives charity, and knows the rights of Allah in his wealth, and he has distanced himself from the people."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بَخَيْرِ النَّاسِ رَجُلًا؟» قَالُوا بَلَى فَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ نَحْوَ الْمَشْرِقِ فَقَالَ «رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِعَنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ يَنْتَظِرُ أَنْ يُغِيرَ أَوْ يُغَارَ عَلَيْهِ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ بَعْدَهُ رَجُلًا؟» قَالُوا بَلَى فَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ نَحْوَ الْحِجَازِ فَقَالَ «رَجٌلٌ فِي غَنَمِهِ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ يَعْلَمُ مَا حَقُّ اللهِ فِي مَالِهِ قَدِ اعْتَزَلَ النَّاسَ»

"Shall I not tell you of the best of the people in status?" We said: "Yes. O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "A man who rides his horse in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, until he dies or is killed. Shall I not tell you of the one who comes after him (in status)?" أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلًا؟» قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ بِرَأْسِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ أَوْ يُقْتَلَ وَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَلِيهِ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي شِعْبٍ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَيَعْتَزِلُ شُرُورَ النَّاسِ وَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «الَّذِي يُسْأَلُ بِاللهِ وَلَا يُعْطِي بِهِ»

"أَلا أُخبركم بخير النَّاسِ مَنْزلَةً؟ رجُلٌ أَخذ بعَنَان فَرَسِهِ في سبيلِ اللَّه حتَّى يُقْتَلَ أو يَمُوتَ، ألا أُخبركم بالذى يليه؟ رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ شِعْبٍ يقيم الصلاة وبؤْتى الزَّكَاة، ويَشْهَدُ أن لا إِله إِلا اللَّه".

"أَلا أُخبركم بخير الناس منزلة يوم القيامة؟ رجل ممسك بعنان فرسه في سبيل اللَّه حتى يموتَ أَو يقتلَ، ألا أُخبركم بالذى يتلوه؟ رجل معتزل في شعب يقيم الصلاة ويؤْتى الزكاة ويعتزل شرور الناس -وفى لفظ- رجل معتزل في غُنَيْمَةِ له يؤَدى حقَّ اللَّه فيها؛ أَلا أخبركم بشرِّ النَّاسِ؟ رجل يُسألُ باللَّه ولا يُعْطى".

"أَلا أُخبركم بخير البرية؟ رجل أَخذ بعنان فرسه في سبيل اللَّه كلما كانت هيعة استوى عليه، ألا أُخبركم بالذى يليه؟ رجل في ثلاثة من غنم يقيمُ الصَّلاة ويؤْتِى الزكاة، أَلا أخبركم بشرِّ البرية؟ الذى يُسأل باللَّه ولا يُعطِى به".

"أَلا أُخبركم بخير الناس رجلًا؟ رجلٌ أخذ بِعِنان فرسه في سبيل اللَّه ينتظر أن يغير أو يُغار عليه، أَلا أُخبركم بخير الناس بعده رجلًا؟ رجل في غُنَيْمةٍ يقيمُ الصلاة ويؤْتى الزَّكاة يعلمُ ما حقُّ اللَّه في ماله، قد اعتزل النَّاس".

"أَلَا أُنبِّئكم بخير النَّاسِ رجلًا؟ رجلٌ أخذ بعنانَ فَرَسِهِ ينتظر أن يُغيرَ أَوْ يغارَ عليه، أَلَا أُنبِّئكم بخير النَّاسِ رجلًا بعدَهُ؟ رجل في غنمه يُقيمُ الصلاة ويؤتى الزَّكاة، ويعلَمُ حق اللَّه عليهِ في ماله، قد اعتزلَ شرورَ النَّاسِ".
