When the ayah of charity was revealed, we used to hire ourselves out to carry loads. Then a man came and gave a large amount in charity, so they said, "He is showing off." Another man came and gave a saʿ in charity, so they said, "Allah has no need of this man's saʿ." Then there was revealed: "Those who criticize the willing givers among the believers regarding charities, and those who find nothing except their own effort..." (Tawbah 9:79) to the end of the ayah.

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الصَّدَقَةِ كُنَّا نُحَامِلُ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَتَصَدَّقَ بِشَىْءٍ كَثِيرٍ، فَقَالُوا: مُرَائِي. وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَتَصَدَّقَ بِصَاعٍ، فَقَالُوا: إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ صَاعِ هَذَا. فَنَزَلَتِ ﴿ الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَجِدُونَ إِلاَّ جُهْدَهُمْ ﴾ الآيَةَ.

When we were ordered to give alms, we began to work as porters (to earn something we could give in charity). Abu ʿAqil came with one half of a Saʿ (special measure for food grains) and another person brought more than he did. So the hypocrites said, "Allah is not in need of the alms of this (i.e. Abu ʿAqil); and this other person did not give alms but for showing off." Then Allah revealed:-- 'Those who criticize such of the Believers who give charity voluntarily and those who could not find to give in charity except what is available to them.' (9.79)

لَمَّا أُمِرْنَا بِالصَّدَقَةِ كُنَّا نَتَحَامَلُ فَجَاءَ أَبُو عَقِيلٍ بِنِصْفِ صَاعٍ وَجَاءَ إِنْسَانٌ بِأَكْثَرَ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ صَدَقَةِ هَذَا وَمَا فَعَلَ هَذَا الآخَرُ إِلاَّ رِئَاءً فَنَزَلَتْ {الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَجِدُونَ إِلاَّ جُهْدَهُمْ} الآيَةَ

"When the Messenger of Allah commanded us to give in charity, Abu 'Aqil give half a Sa', and another man brought much more than that. The hypocrites said: 'Allah has no need of the charity of the former, and the latter only did it to show off. Then the following was revealed: 'Those who defame such of the believers who give charity voluntarily, and such who could not find to give charity except what is available to them."'[1]

لَمَّا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالصَّدَقَةِ فَتَصَدَّقَ أَبُو عَقِيلٍ بِنِصْفِ صَاعٍ وَجَاءَ إِنْسَانٌ بِشَىْءٍ أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ صَدَقَةِ هَذَا وَمَا فَعَلَ هَذَا الآخَرُ إِلاَّ رِيَاءً فَنَزَلَتِ { الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَجِدُونَ إِلاَّ جُهْدَهُمْ }

[AI] "We used to boast about our generosity so a man would bring something to donate and then another person would come with a lot. They said, 'Allah is self-sufficient while this is just a ploy.' Allah then revealed, 'Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort.'" (Quran 9:79)

«كُنَّا نَتَحَامَلُ عَلَى ظُهُورِنَا فَيَجِيءُ الرَّجُلُ بِالشَّيْءِ فَيُتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ بِنِصْفِ صَاعٍ وَجَاءَ إِنْسَانٌ بِشَيْءٍ كَثِيرٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْ صَدَقَةِ هَذَا وَقَالُوا هَذَا مُرَاءٍ فَنَزَلَتِ {الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ} »

[AI] We used to compete with each other in giving charity. One of us would bring a small amount, while another man would bring half a saa. Then, some hypocrites would mock us. So, the verse (Those who defame the voluntary givers among the believers in the charities) was revealed.

كُنَّا نَتَحَامَلُ فَيَجِيءُ أَحَدُنَا بِالصَّدَقَةِ الْقَلِيلَةِ وَيَجِيءُ الرَّجُلُ بِالنِّصْفِ صَاعٍ فَيَلْمِزُنَا نَاسٌ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ فَنَزَلَتْ {الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ} الْآيَةَ

[AI] We used to make fun in giving charity and one of us would bring a measure (of food) and others would criticize him from among the hypocrites, so the verse was revealed: "Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning their charities."
