ذِكْرُ الْخَبَرِ الدَّالِّ عَلَى أَنَّ صَلَاةَ اللَّيْلِ جُعِلَتْ لِلْمُصْطَفَى ﷺ نَفْلًا بَعْدَ أَنْ كَانَ الْفَرْضُ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْبِدَايَةِ

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to love to consistently perform the prayer when he prayed it. And when he was hindered from standing in night prayer due to sleep, illness, or pain, he would pray twelve raka'at during the day."  

ابن حبّان:٢٥٥٢أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى صَلَاةً أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُدَاوِمَ عَلَيْهَا وَكَانَ إِذَا شَغَلَهُ عَنْ قِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ نَوْمٌ أَوْ مَرَضٌ أَوْ وَجَعٌ صَلَّى مِنَ النَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً»

[Machine] "The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to establish his actions when he performed them. And when he would sleep at night or become sick, he would pray twelve rak'at during the day."  

ابن حبّان:٢٦٤٢aأَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ السَّعِيدِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا عَمِلَ عَمَلًا أَثْبَتَهُ وَكَانَ إِذَا نَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ مَرِضَ صَلَّى مِنَ النَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً»  

ذِكْرُ مَا كَانَ يُصَلِّي ﷺ بِالنَّهَارِ مَا فَاتَهُ مِنْ وِرْدِهِ بِاللَّيْلِ

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pray at night because he was prevented from doing so by sleep- meaning, sleep overwhelmed him- or by pain, he would pray twelve rak'ahs during the day. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1789)
