[Machine] Narrate to us a story that you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , which is free from any falsehood, additions, or forgetfulness." He said, "Did any of you recite anything from the Quran tonight?" We replied, "Yes, but we are not skillful in memorizing it." He said, "This Quran is written among you, and you recite it without memorizing it. Yet, you claim that you increase and decrease it. So how about the traditions we heard from the Messenger of Allah? Perhaps we only heard them once. It is sufficient for you when we narrate a tradition according to its meaning." It has been said that his nickname was Abu Qirsafa. Imam al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his compilation.
حَدِّثْنَا حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَيْسَ فِيهِ وَهْمٌ وَلَا مَزِيدٌ وَلَا نِسْيَانٌ فَقَالَ «هَلْ قَرَأَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمُ اللَّيْلَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْئًا؟» فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَهُ بِالْحَافِظِينَ قَالَ «فَهَذَا الْقُرْآنُ مَكْتُوبٌ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ لَا تَأْلُونَ حِفْظَهُ وَأَنْتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّكُمْ تَزِيدُونَ وَتَنْقُصُونَ فَكَيْفَ بِأَحَادِيثَ سَمِعْنَاهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَسَى أَنْ لَا نَكُونَ سَمِعْنَاهَا إِلَّا مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً حَسْبُكُمْ إِذَا جِئْنَاكُمْ بِالْحَدِيثِ عَلَى مَعْنَاهُ» وَقَدْ قِيلَ كُنْيَتُهُ أَبُو قِرْصَافَةَ سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص
