Ali ibn Abi Talib was holding a shield with water in it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was washing his face with that water. A companion named Hatib asked Ali, "Who did this to you?" Ali replied, "Utbah ibn Abu Waqqas attacked me, smashed my face, and broke my four incisors with a thrown stone." Hatib said, "I heard someone shouting on the mountain that Muhammad has been killed, so I came to you, and my soul had almost left me. I asked, 'Where did Utbah go?' and Ali pointed in the direction he went. I chased after him until I caught up with him, struck him with my sword, and beheaded him. Then I descended from the mountain and took his head, his armor, and his horse.
