One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire (or determination) for Jihad died the death of a hypocrite. 'Abdullah b. Mubarak said: We think the hadith pertained to the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَغْزُ وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْ بِهِ نَفْسَهُ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةٍ مِنْ نِفَاقٍ قَالَ ابْنُ سَهْمٍ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ فَنُرَى أَنَّ ذَلِكَ كَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet ﷺ as saying “He who dies without having fought or having felt fighting (against the infidels) to be his duty will die guilty of a kind of hypocrisy.”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَغْزُ وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْ نَفْسَهُ بِالْغَزْوِ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةٍ مِنْ نِفَاقٍ

"Whoever dies without having fought or thought of fighting, he dies on one of the branches of hypocrisy."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَغْزُ وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْ نَفْسَهُ بِغَزْوٍ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةِ نِفَاقٍ

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet ﷺ as saying “He who dies without having fought or having felt fighting (against the infidels) to be his duty will die guilty of a kind of hypocrisy.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2502)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَغْزُ وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْ نَفْسَهُ بِغَزْوٍ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةِ نِفَاقٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever dies without taking part in Jihad and does not have the intention to participate, dies a death of hypocrisy."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَغْزُ وَلَيْسَ فِي نَفْسِهِ الْغَزْوُ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةٍ مِنْ نِفَاقٍ»

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet ﷺ as saying “He who dies without having fought or having felt fighting (against the infidels) to be his duty will die guilty of a kind of hypocrisy.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2502)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَغْزُ وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْ نَفْسَهُ بِغَزْوٍ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةِ نِفَاقٍ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever dies without participating in battle and without having the intention for it, dies upon a branch of hypocrisy."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَغْزُ وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْ نَفْسَهُ بِغَزْوٍ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةٍ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "There are two things among people that are regarded as disbelief: wailing over the dead and slander about lineage."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثِنْتَانِ هِيَ فِي النَّاسِ كُفْرٌ نِيَاحَةٌ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ وَطَعْنٌ فِي النَّسَبِ

"مَنْ مَاتَ ولَمْ يَغْزُ، وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْ نَفْسَهُ بِغَزْوٍ مَاتَ عَلَى شُعْبَةٍ مِنْ نِفَاقٍ".
