A group of Jews came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "As-samu 'Alaika " (Death be on you), and I understood it and said to them, "Alaikum AsSamu wa-l-la'na (Death and curse be on you)." Allah's Apostle said, "Be calm! O ʿAisha, for Allah loves that one should be kind and lenient in all matters." I said. "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Haven't you heard what they have said?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have (already) said (to them), 'Alaikum (upon you).' "  

دَخَلَ رَهْطٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَفَهِمْتُهَا فَقُلْتُ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَهْلاً يَا عَائِشَةُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَوَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا قَالُوا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَدْ قُلْتُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ  

The Jews used to greet the Prophet ﷺ by saying, "As-Samu 'Alaika (i.e., death be upon you), so I understood what they said, and I said to them, "As-Samu 'alaikum wal-la'na (i.e. Death and Allah's Curse be upon you)." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Be gentle and calm, O ʿAisha, as Allah likes gentleness in all affairs." I said, "O Allah's Prophet! Didn't you hear what they said?" He said, "Didn't you hear me answering them back by saying, 'Alaikum (i.e., the same be upon you)?"  

كَانَ الْيَهُودُ يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَقُولُونَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَفَطِنَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِلَى قَوْلِهِمْ فَقَالَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَهْلاً يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ فَقَالَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ أَوَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا يَقُولُونَ قَالَ أَوَلَمْ تَسْمَعِي أَنِّي أَرُدُّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَأَقُولُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ  

A group of Jews asked permission to visit the Prophet (and when they were admitted) they said, "As- Samu 'Alaika (Death be upon you)." I said (to them), "But death and the curse of Allah be upon you!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "O ʿAisha! Allah is kind and lenient and likes that one should be kind and lenient in all matters." I said, "Haven't you heard what they said?" He said, "I said (to them), 'Wa 'Alaikum (and upon you).  

قَالَتِ اسْتَأْذَنَ رَهْطٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقُلْتُ بَلْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ فَقَالَ يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ قُلْتُ أَوَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا قَالُوا قَالَ قُلْتُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ  

As-Sam-u-'Alaikum. A'isha said in response: As-Sam-u-'Alaikum (death be upon you) and curse also, whereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A'isha, verily Allah loves kindness in every matter. She said: Did you bear what they said? Thereupon he said: Did you not hear that I said (to them): Wa 'Alaikum.  

قَالَتِ اسْتَأْذَنَ رَهْطٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ بَلْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ قَالَتْ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا قَالُوا قَالَ قَدْ قُلْتُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ  

that a group of Jews entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and they said: "As-Samu 'Alaik (death be upon you)." So the Prophet ﷺ said: "Wa 'Alaik (And upon you)." So 'Aishah said: "I said: '[Rather] upon you be death and the curse.'" So the Prophet ﷺ said: "O 'Aishah! Indeed Allah loves gentleness in every matter." 'Aishah said: "Did you not hear what they said?" He said: "And I replied: 'And upon you.'"  

إِنَّ رَهْطًا مِنَ الْيَهُودِ دَخَلُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَقُلْتُ بَلْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا قَالُوا قَالَ قَدْ قُلْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي بَصْرَةَ الْغِفَارِيِّ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ وَأَنَسٍ وَأَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْجُهَنِيِّ  

As-Sam-u-'Alaikum. A'isha said in response: As-Sam-u-'Alaikum (death be upon you) and curse also, whereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A'isha, verily Allah loves kindness in every matter. (the wife of the Prophet) A group of Jews entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and said, "As-Samu-Alaikum." (i.e. death be upon you). I understood it and said, "Wa-Alaikum As-Samu wal-la'n. (death and the curse of Allah be Upon you)." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said "Be calm, O ʿAisha! Allah loves that on, should be kind and lenient in all matters." I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! [Machine] A man from the Jews entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "As-Samu Alaykum" (meaning, death be upon you). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Wa Alaykum" (meaning, and upon you). I understood the meaning, so I said, "As-Samu Alaykum" and added, "and curse." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Aisha, be gentle, for Allah loves kindness in all matters." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what he said to you?" He replied, "I did, and I responded by saying 'and upon you' 10144 times." 'Imran ibn Bakkar narrated to me, he said: Abu Al-Yaman informed us, he said: Shu'ayb narrated to us from Az-Zuhri, who narrated to me from Urwah, who said: A man from the Jews entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned something similar.  

دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ «وَعَلَيْكُمْ» فَفَهِمْتُهَا فَقُلْتُ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَاللَّعْنَةُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَا عَائِشَةُ عَلَيْكِ بِالرِّفْقِ فَإِنَّ اللهَ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الْأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى مَا قَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ؟ قَالَ قَدْ قُلْتُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ 10144 أَخْبَرَنِي عِمْرَانُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ  

[Machine] A group of Jews entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "As-Salamu 'Alaykum" (peace be upon you). Aisha said, "So I understood it and therefore I said, 'Upon you is 'Al-Sam' (death) and 'Al-La'nah' (curse)'. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Wait a moment, O Aisha. Verily, Allah loves gentleness in everything.' Aisha said, 'So I said, O Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what they said?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have already responded to them by saying, 'Upon you is'."
