[Machine] If the muadhin (the one who calls the adhan) calls for prayer, people from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would rush to stand in rows and pray until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would come out to them. They would continue to pray the two units of the sunnah before Maghrib, with nothing in between the adhan and the iqamah.  

البيهقي:٢٢٨١ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَدِيبُ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ أنبأ شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَامِرٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ؓ قَالَ

إِنْ كَانَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ إِذَا أَذَّنَ قَامَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَيَبْتَدِرُونَ السَّوَارِيَ يُصَلُّونَ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُمْ كَذَلِكَ يُصَلُّونَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ الْأَذَانِ وَالْإِقَامَةِ شَيْءٌ  

رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بَشَّارٍ وَرَوَاهُ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ فَقَالَ وَكَانَ بَيْنَ الْأَذَانِ وَالْإِقَامَةِ قَرِيبٌ يَعْنِي بِهِ فِي صَلَاةِ الْمَغْرِبِ

"When the Mu'adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan, some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ would proceed to the pillars of the mosque (for the prayer) till the Prophet ﷺ arrived and in this way they used to pray two rakʿat before the Maghrib prayer. There used to be a little time between the Adhan and the Iqama." Shuʿba said, "There used to be a very short interval between the two (Adhan and Iqama).
