Umar b. 'Abd al-'Aziz one day deferred the prayer. 'Urwa b. Zubair came to him and informed him that one day as Mughira b. Shu'ba was in Kufa (as its governor), he deferred the prayer, Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari came to him and said: What is this, O Mughira? Did you know that it was Gabriel who came and said prayer and (then) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the prayer (along with him), then (Gabriel) prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also prayed, then (Gabriel) prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also prayed, then (Gabriel) prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed (along with him). then Gabriel prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also prayed (along with him) and then said: This is how I have been ordered to do. 'Umar (b. 'Abd al-'Aziz) said. O 'Urwa be mindful of what you are saying that Gabriel (peace be upon him) taught the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the times of prayer. Upon this 'Urwa said: This is how Bashir b. Abu Mas'ud narrated on the authority of his father  

مَا هَذَا يَا مُغِيرَةُ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ نَزَلَ فَصَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِهَذَا أُمِرْتُ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِعُرْوَةَ انْظُرْ مَا تُحَدِّثُ يَا عُرْوَةُ أَوَإِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ هُوَ أَقَامَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقْتَ الصَّلاَةِ فَقَالَ عُرْوَةُ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ  

He said, "Yahya ibn Yahya al-Laythi related to me from Malik ibn Anas from Ibn Shihab that one day Umar ibn Abdal-Aziz delayed the prayer. Urwa ibn az-Zubayr came and told him that al-Mughira ibn Shuba had delayed the prayer one day while he was in Kufa and Abu Masud al- Ansari had come to him and said, 'What's this, Mughira? Don't you know that the angel Jibril came down and prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed.' Then he prayed again, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed. Then he prayed again, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed. Then he prayed again, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed. Then he prayed again, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed. Then Jibril said, 'This is what you have been ordered to do.' Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz said, 'Be sure of what you relate, Urwa. Was it definitely Jibril who established the time of the prayer for the Messenger of Allah?' " Urwa said, "That's how it was related to Bashir ibn Abi Masud al-Ansari by his father."  

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ أَخَّرَ الصَّلاَةَ يَوْمًا فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ فَأَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ أَخَّرَ الصَّلاَةَ يَوْمًا وَهُوَ بِالْكُوفَةِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا يَا مُغِيرَةُ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ نَزَلَ فَصَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِهَذَا أُمِرْتُ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ اعْلَمْ مَا تُحَدِّثُ بِهِ يَا عُرْوَةُ أَوَ إِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ هُوَ الَّذِي أَقَامَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقْتَ الصَّلاَةِ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ  

[Machine] "What is this, O Mugheera? Did you not know that Jibreel descended upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed?" Then he said, "I know what you are talking about, O Urwah. Did Jibreel establish the prayer time for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "That was how Bashir ibn Abi Mas'ood narrated it from his father." Urwah added, "Aisha told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray Asr and the sun sets in her chambers before it appeared."  

مَا هَذَا يَا مُغِيرَةُ؟ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ نَزَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ «فَصَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «بِهَذَا أُمِرْتَ» قَالَ أعْلمْ مَا تُحَدِّثُ يَا عُرْوَةُ أَوَ أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ أَقَامَ وَقْتَ الصَّلَاةِ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ وَلَقَدْ حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ «يُصَلِّي الْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ فِي حُجْرَتِهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَظْهَرَ»  

[Machine] Narrated to us Al-Qa'nabi from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz once delayed the prayer in his leadership. Urwah ibn Zubair entered upon him and informed him that Mu'ghirah ibn Shu'bah also delayed the prayer while he was in Kufa. Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari then entered upon him and said, "O Mu'ghirah, what is this? Did you not know that Gabrielﷺ descended and performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the prayer?" Then he said, "By this I was commanded." Abu Mas'ud said, "I know what you are talking about, O Urwah. Or indeed, Gabriel established the prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the time of prayer." He said, "That was how Bashir ibn Abi Mas'ud used to narrate from his father."  

حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ أَخَّرَ الصَّلَاةَ يَوْمًا فِي إِمْرَتِهِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ فَأَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ أَخَّرَ الصَّلَاةَ يَوْمًا وَهُوَ بِالْكُوفَةِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ يَا مُغِيرَةُ مَا هَذَا؟ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ «أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ نَزَلَ فَصَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «بِهَذَا أُمِرْتُ» قَالَ أَعْلَمُ مَا تُحَدِّثُ يَا عُرْوَةُ أَوْ إِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ أَقَامَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقْتَ الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ  

[Machine] Urwa Massa Al-Mughira was praying Asr in Kufa when Abu Mas'ood Al-Ansari entered upon him and said, "What is this, O Mughira? By Allah, you surely knew that Jibril came down and led the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer, and then the people prayed five prayers, as he said, and then he said, 'This is what I have been commanded to do.'" Umar said to Urwa, "Know what you are saying, for it was Jibril who established the time for prayer." Urwa said, "That is how Bashir bin Abu Mas'ood related it from his father."  

عُرْوَةُ مَسَّى الْمُغِيرَةُ بِصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْكُوفَةِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أبو مَسْعُودٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا يَا مُغِيرَةُ؟ أَمَا وَاللهِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ لَقَدْ نَزَلَ جِبْرِيلُ فَصَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى النَّاسُ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ يَقُولُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «هَكَذَا أُمِرْتُ» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِعُرْوَةَ اعْلَمْ مَا تَقُولُهُ فَإِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ هُوَ الَّذِي أَقَامَ وَقْتَ الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ  

[Machine] That Gabriel came down and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then he said, "Am I ordered with this?" Omar said to Urwa, "Look what you are narrating, O Urwa, or is it Gabriel who established the prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the time of prayer?" Urwa said, "Bashir bin Abi Mas'ood narrated it from his father." Urwa said, "Aisha, the prophet's wife ﷺ, told me that the prophet ﷺ used to pray Asr while the sun was still in her room before it appeared."  

أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ نَزَلَ فَصَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِهَذَا أُمِرْتُ؟ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِعُرْوَةَ انْظُرْ مَا تُحَدِّثُ يَا عُرْوَةُ أَوْ أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ هُوَ أَقَامَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَقْتَ الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ عُرْوَةُ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ وَلَقَدْ حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ زَوْجُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُصَلِّي الْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ فِي حُجْرَتِهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَظْهَرَ  

"عَنِ الزُّهْرِىِّ قَالَ: كنَّا مَعَ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ فَأَخَّرَ صَلَاةً مَرَّةً (يَعْنِى الْعَصْرَ) وَهُوَ عَلَى الْكُوفَةِ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْه أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ الأَنْصَارِىُّ، فَقَالَ أَمَا وَالله يَا مُغيرَةُ؟ ! لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ نَزَلَ (فَصَلَّى) فَصَلِّى رَسُولُ الله ﷺ فَصَلَّى النَّاسُ معَه، ثمَ نَزَل فَصَلَّى، فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ الله ﷺ وَصَلَّى النَّاسُ مَعَهُ، حَتَّى عَدَّ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ: هَكَذَا أُمِرْتُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: انْظُرْ مَا تَقُولُ يَا عُرْوَةُ، أوَ أنَّ جِبْرِيلَ هُوَ أَقَامَ وَقْتَ الصَّلَاةِ؟ فَقَالَ: عُرْوَةُ: كَذَلِكَ كَانَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ أبِى مَسْعُودٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ".
