Amr b. al-As crying on his deathbed and describing his interactions the Prophet

[Machine] When death approached Amr ibn al-As, he wept. His son, Abdullah, said to him, "Why are you crying? Is it from the fear of death?" He replied, "No, by Allah, but because of what comes after." His son said to him, "You were on the right path," and began to remind him of his companionship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his conquests in Sham. Amr said, "You have neglected something better than all of that: the testimony that there is no god but Allah. I had gone through three phases in my life, each of which I knew well in myself.

I was first a disbeliever, and the most intense enemy of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ; had I died then, I would undoubtedly have been in Hell. When I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I was the most bashful of people before him. I could not gaze fully upon him, nor speak frankly with him until he departed to Allah out of shyness. If I had died then, people would have said, 'Congratulations to Amr; he became a Muslim and was on the right path, so he died hoping for Paradise.' After that, I took on positions of power and other experiences, about which I do not know whether they will be for or against me.

So, if I die, do not cry for me, do not follow me with praises or fire. Tighten my shroud well, for I will be questioned. Spread soil over me evenly, for my right side does not deserve it more than my left side. Do not place wood or stone in my grave. When you have buried me, sit by me for the time it takes to slaughter and distribute a camel so that I may find solace with you."  

قَالَ لَمَّا حَضَرَتْ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ الْوَفَاةُ بَكَى فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ لِمَ تَبْكِي أَجَزَعًا عَلَى الْمَوْتِ؟ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ وَلَكِنْ مِمَّا بَعْدُ فَقَالَ لَهُ قَدْ كُنْتَ عَلَى خَيْرٍ فَجَعَلَ يُذَكِّرُهُ صُحْبَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَفُتُوحَهُ الشَّامَ فَقَالَ عَمْرٌو تَرَكْتَ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ شَهَادَةَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ إِنِّي كُنْتُ عَلَى ثَلَاثَةِ أَطْبَاقٍ لَيْسَ فِيهَا طَبَقٌ إِلَّا قَدْ عَرَفْتُ نَفْسِي فِيهِ

كُنْتُ أَوَّلَ شَيْءٍ كَافِرًا وَكُنْتُ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَوْ مِتُّ حِينَئِذٍ وَجَبَتْ لِي النَّارُ فَلَمَّا بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كُنْتُ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ حَيَاءً مِنْهُ فَمَا مَلَأْتُ عَيْنِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَا رَاجَعْتُهُ فِيمَا أُرِيدُ حَتَّى لَحِقَ بِاللهِ ﷻ حَيَاءً مِنْهُ فَلَوْ مِتُّ يَوْمَئِذٍ قَالَ النَّاسُ هَنِيئًا لِعَمْرٍو أَسْلَمَ وَكَانَ عَلَى خَيْرٍ فَمَاتَ فَرُجِيَ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ ثُمَّ تَلَبَّسْتُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ بِالسُّلْطَانِ وَأَشْيَاءَ فَلَا أَدْرِي عَلَيَّ أَمْ لِي

فَإِذَا مِتُّ فَلَا تَبْكِيَنَّ عَلَيَّ وَلَا تُتْبِعْنِي مَادِحًا وَلَا نَارًا وَشُدُّوا عَلَيَّ إِزَارِي فَإِنِّي مُخَاصِمٌ وَسُنُّوا عَلَيَّ التُّرَابَ سَنًّا فَإِنَّ جَنْبِيَ الْأَيْمَنَ لَيْسَ بِأَحَقَّ بِالتُّرَابِ مِنْ جَنْبِي الْأَيْسَرِ وَلَا تَجْعَلَنَّ فِي قَبْرِي خَشَبَةً وَلَا حَجَرًا فَإِذَا وَارَيْتُمُونِي فَاقْعُدُوا عِنْدِي قَدْرَ نَحْرِ جَزُورٍ وَتَقْطِيعِهَا أَسْتَأْنِسْ بِكُمْ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out while reciting and heading towards one of the idols. We slaughtered a sheep for him and prepared it in a pot. When it was cooked, we took it out with us in a bowl. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode his camel while reciting. When we reached the outskirts of Mecca, Zaid bin Amr bin Nufayl met him and greeted his companion with a pre-Islamic greeting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Why do I see that your people have been spreading falsehoods about me and disliking me?" Zaid said, "By Allah, they do so out of jealousy for what they used to see me do for them, but I consider them lost. That is why I left in search of this religion until I reached the scholars of Khaybar, where I found them worshipping Allah and associating partners with Him. I said, 'By Allah, this is not the religion that I sought.' Then I went on until I reached the scholars of Sham (Greater Syria), where I found them worshipping Allah and associating partners with Him. I said, 'By Allah, this is not the religion that I left in search of.' One of the scholars of Sham said, 'Verily, you will not find anyone on the peninsula worshipping Allah alone, except for one person in the land.' So I went until I reached him and informed him of what I was searching for. He said to me, 'Indeed, everyone you have seen is lost, and you are inquiring about the religion of Allah and His angels. Yet a Prophet has arisen or is about to arise in your land, so return and believe in him.' So I returned and did not test any prophet after that." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am the Messenger of Allah." He then put the dish in front of him and said, "What is this?" They replied, "A sheep that we slaughtered for the idol." Zaid said, "We do not eat anything that is slaughtered for other than Allah." Then we went our separate ways. Zaid bin Amr bin Nufayl died before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He will be resurrected alone on the Day of Judgment."  

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُرْدِفِي إِلَى نُصُبٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَابِ فَذَبَحْنَا لَهُ شَاةً ثُمَّ صَنَعْنَاهَا فِي الْإِرَّةِ فَلَمَّا نَضِجَتِ اسْتَخْرَجْنَاها فِي سُفْرَتِنَا ثُمَّ رَكِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَاقَتَهُ وَهُوَ مُرْدِفِي فَلَمَّا كُنَّا بِأَعْلَى مَكَّةَ لَقِيَهُ زَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ فَحَيَّا أَحَدُهُمَا صَاحِبَهُ بِتَحِيَّةِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا لِي أَرَى قَوْمَكَ قَدْ شَنِفُوكَ وكَرَهُوكَ؟» فَقَالَ وَاللهِ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ لَبِغَيْرِ مَا ثَائِرَةٍ كَانَتْ مِنِّي إِلَيْهِمْ إِلَّا أَنِّي أَرَاهُمْ فِي ضَلَالٍ فَخَرَجْتُ أَبْتَغِي هَذَا الدِّينَ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَى أَحْبَارِ خَيْبَرَ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللهَ ويُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ فَقُلْتُ وَاللهِ مَا هَذَا بِالدَّيْنِ الَّذِي أَبْتَغِي بِهِ فَخَرَجْتُ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَى أَحْبَارِ الشَّامِ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللهَ ويُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ فَقُلْتُ وَاللهِ مَا هَذَا بِالدَّيْنِ الَّذِي خَرَجْتُ أَبْتَغِي فَقَالَ حَبْرٌ مِنْ أَحْبَارِ الشَّامِ إِنَّكَ لَتَسْأَلُ عَنْ دَيْنٍ مَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا يَعْبُدُ اللهَ بِهِ إِلَّا شَخْصًا بِالْجَزِيرَةِ فَخَرَجْتُ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِالَّذِي خَرَجْتُ لَهُ فَقَالَ لِي إِنَّ كُلَّ مِنْ رَأَيْتَ فِي ضَلَالٍ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَسْأَلُ عَنْ دَيْنِ اللهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَقَدْ خَرَجَ فِي أَرْضِكَ نَبِيٌّ أَوْ هُوَ خَارِجٌ فَارْجِعْ فَصَدِّقْهُ وَآمِنْ بِهِ فَرَجَعْتُ فَلَمْ أَخْتَبِرْ نَبِيًّا بَعْدُ قَالَ فَأَنَاخَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَاقَتَهُ فَوَضَعَ السُّفْرَةَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالَ «شَاةٌ ذَبَحْنَاهَا لِنُصُبِ كَذَا كَذَا» فَقَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو إِنَّا لَا نَأْكُلُ شَيْئًا ذُبِحَ لِغَيْرِ اللهِ ثُمَّ تَفَرَّقْنَا قَالَ وَمَاتَ زَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ قَبْلَ أنْ يُبْعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يُبْعَثُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أُمَّةً وَحْدَهُ»
