bayhaqi:12552Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥāfiẓ And ʾAbū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Ibrāhīm Waʾabū ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Sulamī Imlāʾ Qālūā

[Machine] I asked Abdullah bin Abu Awfa, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ give any will?" He replied, "No." I said, "But isn't it prescribed for people to write a will?" He said, "He advised us to adhere to the Book of Allah." And in the narration of As-Sulami, it is mentioned, "So how did he write (his will)?"  

البيهقي:١٢٥٥٢أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو زَكَرِيَّا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَأَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيُّ إِمْلَاءً قَالُوا أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبْدُوُسٍ الطَّرَائِفِيُّ ثنا مُعَاذُ بْنُ نَجْدَةَ ثنا خَلَّادُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ثنا مَالِكُ بْنُ مِغْوَلٍ ثنا طَلْحَةُ بْنُ مُصَرِّفٍ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أَبِي أَوْفَى هَلْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْصَى؟ قَالَ لَا قال قُلْتُ فَقَدْ كُتِبَ عَلَى النَّاسِ الْوَصِيَّةُ أَوْ قَالَ أُمِرُوا بِالْوَصِيَّةِ قَالَ أَوْصَى بِكِتَابِ اللهِ ﷻ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ السُّلَمِيِّ فَكَيْفَ كَتَبَ؟  

رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ خَلَّادِ بْنِ يَحْيَى وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ مِغْوَلٍ

I asked ʿAbdullah bin Abu ʿAufa "Did the Prophet ﷺ make a will?" He replied, "No," I asked him, "How is it then that the making of a will has been enjoined on people, (or that they are ordered to make a will)?" He replied, "The Prophet ﷺ bequeathed Allah's Book (i.e. Qur'an).

I asked 'Abdullah b. Abu Aufa whether Messenger of Allah ﷺ had made any will (in regard to his property). He said: NO. I said: Then why has making of will been made necessary for the Muslims, or why were they commanded to make will? Thereupon he said: He made the will according to the Book of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic.  

مسلم:١٦٣٤aحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى التَّمِيمِيُّ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ مِغْوَلٍ عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ مُصَرِّفٍ قَالَ
