[Machine] When the verse "{To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent}" [Al-Baqarah 284] was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , it became a burden on his companions. They went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat on their knees, saying, "O Messenger of Allah, we have been burdened with acts of worship that we cannot bear. Prayer, fasting, Jihad, and giving charity have been revealed to you, and we cannot bear them." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Do you want to say what the previous people of the two Scriptures said? 'We hear and we disobey'? Rather, say: 'We hear and we obey, forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the destination.'" They said, "We hear and we obey, forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the destination." When the people said it, Allah revealed the verse "{The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], 'We make no distinction between any of His messengers'}" [Al-Baqarah 285]. 'Affaan recited it as "Salaamun Abu Al-Mundhir, who differentiates." So Allah revealed the verse "{But they say, 'We hear and we disobey.' And their saying is not right. But rather, Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few}" [Al-Baqarah 285]. When they did that, Allah abrogated it with His saying "{Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns}" [Al-Baqarah 286]. (For them) it was recorded what is good and bad. The high Thaat was explained as "Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error" [Al-Baqarah 286], and Allah replied: "Yes" (accepted their invocation). They said, "Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us" [Al-Baqarah 286], Allah replied: "Yes" (accepted their invocation). They said, "Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear" [Al-Baqarah 286], Allah replied: "Yes" (accepted their invocation). They said, "Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Mawla (Patron, Supporer and Protector, etc.) and give us victory over the disbelieving people" [Al-Baqarah 286].

Belief and obedience to the Command of Allah and forgiveness for falling short

muslim:125Muḥammad b. Minhāl al-Ḍarīr And ʾUmayyah b. Bisṭām al-ʿAyshī > Yazīd b. Zurayʿ > Rawḥ / Ibn al-Qāsim > al-ʿAlāʾ from his father > Abū Hurayrah

When there was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it; then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allah is capable of all things,” (Baqarah 2:284) that weighed heavily upon the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

So they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then knelt down on their knees and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have been charged with deeds that we are able to do: prayer, fasting, striving, and charity, but this verse has been revealed to you and we cannot bear it!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do you want to say as the People of the two Books before you said, ‘We hear and we disobey?’ Rather say: ‘We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.’” They said: “We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.”

Then when the people recited it, their tongues became accustomed to it, and Allah revealed immediately after it: “The Messenger has believed in what was sent down to him from his Lord, and the believers. Each has believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers: ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they said: ‘We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.’” (Baqarah 2:285)

So when they did that, Allah ﷻ abrogated it, and Allah ﷻ revealed: “Allah does not hold any soul to account except for what is its capacity. It will have what it has earned, and against it what it has acquired. Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake.” (Baqarah 2:286) He ﷻ said: “Yes.” “Our Lord, and do not place upon us a burden as You placed it upon those before us.” (Baqarah 2:286) He ﷻ said: “Yes.” “Our Lord, and do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear.” (Baqarah 2:286) He ﷻ said: “Yes.” “And pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Patron, so grant us victory over the disbelieving people.” (Baqarah 2:286) He ﷻ said: “Yes.”

"When this Ayah was revealed: And whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it (2:284). Somethings entered their hearts that had not entered before. So they mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ and he said: 'Say: "We hear and we obey." So Allah put faith into their hearts and Allah Blessed and Most High revealed the Ayah: The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers (and) Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear, for it is what it has earned and against it is what it has wrought. "Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error (2:286)." He said: 'I have done so (as requested).' Our Lord! Lay not upon us a burden like that which You did upon those before us. He said: ['I have done so (as requested).'] Our Lord! Put not a burden upon us greater than we have strength for. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us (2:286). He said: 'I have done so (as requested).'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2992)

When this verse:" Whether you disclose that which is in your mind or conceal it, Allah will call you to account according to it" (ii 284), there entered in their minds something (of that fear) such as had never entered their hearts (before). The Apostle ﷺ observed: Say: We have heard and obeyed and submitted ourselves. He (the reporter) said: Allah instilled faith in their hearts and He revealed this verse:" Allah burdens not a soul beyond its capacity. It gets every good that it earns and it suffers every ill that it earns. Our Lord, call us not to account if we forget or make a mistake. He the (Lord) said: I indeed did it. Our Lord! do not lay on us a burden as Thou didst lay on those before us. He (our Lord) said: I indeed did it. And pardon us, have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector" (ii. 286). He said: I indeed did it. (Using translation from Muslim 126)
