[AI] "What is this prayer that I have seen people praying and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not pray or command it?" Muawiyah said, "That is what Ibn Zubayr advises them." Ibn Zubayr entered, greeted, and sat down. Muawiyah asked, "O Ibn Zubayr, what is this prayer that you are commanding people to pray? We did not see the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ pray it or command it." Ibn Zubayr replied, "Aisha, the mother of the believers, informed me that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to pray it in her house." Muawiyah then asked Ibn Zubayr and another man to go and ask Aisha about it. Ibn Zubayr said, "I went to her and asked her about it, and I informed her about what Ibn Zubayr said. She replied, 'I did not tell Ibn Zubayr that the Prophet prayed these two units of prayer after 'Asr (afternoon prayer) with me. I only told him that the Prophet prayed them at my house. So I asked her, 'Did you pray these two units of prayer that you did not used to pray?' She replied, 'Something came up and I was preoccupied with it, so I missed those two units of prayer after Dhuhr (noon prayer). Then Bilal called me for prayer, and I did not want to withhold the people, so I prayed those two units of prayer.' Then I returned and informed Muawiyah. Muawiyah said to him, 'Did he not say that he had prayed them?' Ibn Zubayr replied, 'We should not leave them.' Muawiyah said, 'You will always be a dissenter.'"

I was sent to Aisha by Ibn ʿAbbas, Al-Miswar bin Makhrama and ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Azhar . They told me to greet her on their behalf and to ask her about the offering of the two rakʿat after the ʿAsr prayer and to say to her, "We were informed that you offer those two rakʿat and we were told that the Prophet had forbidden offering them." Ibn ʿAbbas said, "I along with ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab used to beat the people whenever they offered them." I went to Aisha and told her that message. ʿAisha said, "Go and ask Um Salama about them." So I returned and informed them about her statement. They then told me to go to Um Salama with the same question with which t sent me to ʿAisha. Um Salama replied, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ forbidding them. Later I saw him offering them immediately after he prayed the ʿAsr prayer. He then entered my house at a time when some of the Ansari women from the tribe of Bani Haram were sitting with me, so I sent my slave girl to him having said to her, 'Stand beside him and tell him that Um Salama says to you, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have heard you forbidding the offering of these (two rakʿat after the ʿAsr prayer) but I have seen you offering them." If he waves his hand then wait for him.' The slave girl did that. The Prophet ﷺ beckoned her with his hand and she waited for him. When he had finished the prayer he said, "O daughter of Bani Umaiya! You have asked me about the two rakʿat after the ʿAsr prayer. The people of the tribe of ʿAbdul-Qais came to me and made me busy and I could not offer the two rakʿat after the Zuhr prayer. These (two rakʿat that I have just prayed) are for those (missed) ones.

That Kuraib, the freed slave of Ibn ʿAbbas told him that Ibn ʿAbbas, ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Azhar and Al-Miswar bin Makhrama sent him to ʿAisha saying, "Pay her our greetings and ask her about our offering of the two-rakʿat after ʿAsr Prayer, and tell her that we have been informed that you offer these two rakʿat while we have heard that the Prophet ﷺ had forbidden their offering." Ibn ʿAbbas said, "I and ʿUmar used to beat the people for their offering them." Kuraib added, "I entered upon her and delivered their message to her.' She said, 'Ask Um Salama.' So, I informed them (of ʿAisha's answer) and they sent me to Um Salama for the same purpose as they sent me to ʿAisha. Um Salama replied, 'I heard the Prophet ﷺ forbidding the offering of these two rakʿat. Once the Prophet ﷺ offered the ʿAsr prayer, and then came to me. And at that time some Ansari women from the Tribe of Banu Haram were with me. Then (the Prophet ﷺ ) offered those two rakʿat, and I sent my (lady) servant to him, saying, 'Stand beside him and say (to him): Um Salama says, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Didn't I hear you forbidding the offering of these two rakʿat (after the ʿAsr prayer yet I see you offering them?' And if he beckons to you with his hand, then wait behind.' So the lady slave did that and the Prophet ﷺ beckoned her with his hand, and she stayed behind, and when the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he said, 'O the daughter of Abu Umaiya (i.e. Um Salama), You were asking me about these two rakʿat after the ʿAsr prayer. In fact, some people from the tribe of ʿAbdul Qais came to me to embrace Islam and busied me so much that I did not offer the two rakʿat which were offered after Zuhr compulsory prayer, and these two rakʿat (you have seen me offering) make up for those."

I along with 'Umar b. al-Khattab dissuaded people to do so (to observe two rak'ahs of prayer). Kuraib said: I went to her ('A'isha) and conveyed to her the message with which I was sent. She said: (Better) ask Umm Salama. So I went to them (those who had sent him to Hadrat 'A'isha) and informed them about what she had said. They sent me back to Umm Salama with that with which I was sent to 'A'isha. Umm Salama said: I beard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibiting them, and then afterwards I saw him observing them. And when he observed them (two rak'ahs) he had already observed the 'Asr prayer. Then he (the Holy Prophet) came, while there were with me ladies of Banu Haram, a tribe of the Ansar and he (the Holy Prophet) observed them (the two rak'ahs). I sent a slave-girl to him asking her to stand by his side and say to him that Umm Salama says: Messenger of Allah, I heard you prohibiting these two rak'ahs, whereas I saw you observing them; and if he (the Holy Prophet) points with his hand (to wait), then do wait. The slave-girl did like that. He (the Holy Prophet) pointed out with his hand and she got aside and waited, and when he had finished (the prayer) he said: Daughter of Abu Umayya. you have asked about the two rak'ahs after the 'Asr prayer. Some people of 'Abu al-Qais came to me for embracing Islam and hindered me from observing the two rak'ahs which come after the noon prayer. So those are the two I have been praying.

That 'Abd Allah b. Abbas, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Azhar and al-Miswar b. Makhramah sent him to 'Aishah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ. They said: Convey our regards to her from all of us and ask her about the two rak'ahs after the 'Asr prayer, and tell her that we have been informed that she prays them, and we are told that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited them. I entered upon her and told her that for which they had sent me to her. She said: Ask Umm Salamah. I returned to them (Ibn 'Abbas and others) and informed them about her opinion. [AI] "He came to Basra, and with him was Abdullah Ibn Abbas as a leader. Then, he saw a man standing in the shade of the palace, saying 'Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth, Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.' I approached him and said, 'You have repeated your statement that Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.' He replied, 'By Allah, if you wish, I can tell you.' I said, 'Yes.' So he said, 'Then sit down.' He said, 'I met the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , while he was in the city at such and such a time, and there were two elders of the village who had a son. The son left, and they followed him, saying, 'You are going to the city, and our son has followe dthis man. Go to him and ask for him, and if he refuses anything but a ransom, then redeem him.' So I went to the city and entered upon the Prophet of Allah, ﷺ , and said, 'O Prophet of Allah, two elders of the village have ordered me to seek their son from you.' He asked, 'Do you know him?' I replied, 'I know his lineage.' So he called the boy and he came. The Prophet of Allah, ﷺ , said, 'He is here, so go and bring his parents.' I said, 'As a ransom, O Prophet of Allah?' He said, 'It is not appropriate for us, the family of Muhammad, to eat the ransom of the children of Isma'il.' Then he struck my shoulder and said, 'Should I not fear for the Quraysh except themselves?' I asked, 'What about them, O Prophet of Allah?' He said, 'If you live long enough, you will see them here, until you see the people crowded among them like sheep between two water troughs, moving from one to the other. I see people seeking permission to see Ibn Abbas, and I have seen them last year seeking permission to see Muawiyah. So I mentioned what the Prophet ﷺ had said."

[AI] "So I approached her and she was praying the Duha prayer, so I said, 'I will sit until she finishes.' They said, 'No, it's okay,' but I asked her how I should seek permission from her. She said, 'Say, "Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. Peace be upon the mothers of the believers or the wives of the Prophet ﷺ. Peace be upon you all." He said, 'So I entered upon her and asked her. She said, 'It is the home of a bachelor, indeed. The people of the household are indeed good people.' I asked her about al-Wisal (remaining in the mosque from Fajr prayer until Ishraq prayer). She said, 'When the Battle of Uhud happened, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions performed prayers separately. When they saw the crescent moon, they informed the Prophet ﷺ. He said, 'If it had increased, I would have indeed increased. He was asked, 'Do you do that or something similar?' He said, 'I am not like you. I spend the night in a state that my Lord feeds me and gives me drink.' I asked her about the two Rak'ahs after 'Asr prayer. She said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man to collect Sadaqah. He came to him at midday. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the Dhuhr prayer and prayed those two Rak'ahs. Then he offered the 'Asr prayer and prayed those two Rak'ahs. She said, 'Upon you is to pray the night prayer, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never neglected it. Even if he was sick, he would recite while sitting.' And I knew that some of you say, 'It is enough for me to establish what has been written for me, how can I have that and then ask her about the day in which there is difference regarding Ramadan?' She said, 'Because fasting a day in Sha'ban is more beloved to me than fasting a day in Ramadan.' He said, 'So I went out and asked Ibn 'Umar and Abu Hurairah, and each of them said, 'The wives of the Prophet ﷺ know more about that than us.'

[AI] My father agreed on performing the Umrah pilgrimage, so when the time came for us to depart, he said, "Oh my son, if we were to visit the prince, we should bid him farewell." I replied, "Whatever you wish." So we visited Marwan, and among those present was Abdullah ibn Zubayr. They mentioned the two units of prayer that Ibn Zubayr used to perform after Asr prayer. Marwan asked him, "From whom did you learn these two units of prayer, O son of Zubayr?" He replied, "Abu Hurairah informed me of them, from Aisha." Marwan sent a message to Aisha, asking, "Do you know anything about the two units of prayer that Ibn Zubayr performs after Asr prayer, claiming that Abu Hurairah informed him of them from you?". Aisha sent back, saying, "May Allah forgive Aisha, as I have misplaced my matter. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray Dhuhr and there was money that had come to him, so he sat down to distribute it until the Muadhin came to him for Asr prayer. He then prayed Asr and came to me. It happened to be my day, so he performed two light units of prayer. I then said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Were you commanded to perform these two units of prayer?' He replied, 'No, but these two units of prayer were the ones that I used to perform after Dhuhr, but the division of this money distracted me until the time for Asr arrived. I disliked abandoning them.' Ibn Zubayr said: 'Allah is Greater! Did he not perform them once?' By Allah! I will never abandon them." Umm Salamah remarked, "I never saw him performing these two units of prayer before or after this incident."

Ibn Zubayr said, 'Aisha narrated to me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he sent two men to her, saying, 'The Commander of the Believers greets you with salaam and says, 'Did ibn Zubayr claim that you ordered him to pray these two rak'ahs after Asr prayer?' Aisha said, 'That is what Umm Salamah informed him,' so we went to Umm Salamah and told her what Aisha said. Umm Salamah said, 'May Allah have mercy on her, did I not inform her that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited them?'""

Hittan ibn Abdullah ar-Ruqashi said: AbuMusa al-Ash'ari led us in prayer. When he sat at the end of his prayer, one of the people said: Prayer has been established by virtue and purity. When AbuMusa returned (from his prayer or finished his prayer), he gave his attention to the people, and said: Which of you is the speaker of such and such words? The people remained silent. Which of you is the speaker of such and such words? The people remained silent. He said: You might have said them, Hittan. He replied: I did not say them. I was afraid you might punish me. One of the people said: I said them and I did not intend by them (anything) except good. AbuMusa said: Do you not know how you utter (them) in your prayer? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us, and taught us and explained to us our way of doing and taught us our prayer. He said: When you pray a (congregational) prayer, straighten your rows, then one of you should lead you in prayer. When he says the takbir (Allah is Most Great), say the takbir, and when he recites verses "Not of those upon whom is Thy anger, nor of those who err" (i.e. the end of Surah i.), say Amin; Allah will favour you. When he says "Allah is most great," and bows, say "Allah is most great" and bow, for the imam will bow before you, and will raise (his head) before you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: This is for that. When he says "Allah listens to the one who praises Him," say: "O Allah, our Lord, to Thee be praise, Allah be praised," Allah will listen to you, for Allah, the Exalted, said by the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ: "Allah listens to the one who praises Him." When he says "Allah is most great" and prostrates, say: "Allah is most great" and prostrate, for the imam prostrates before you and raises his head before you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: This is for that. When he sits, each one of you should say "The adorations of the tongue, all good things, and acts of worship are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah's upright servants. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Apostle." This version of Ahmad does not mention the words "and His blessings" nor the phrase "and I testify"; instead, it has the words "that Muhammad." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 972)

Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman as-Sulami and Hibban bin ʿAtiyyah had a dispute. ʿAbdur-Rahman said to Hibban: I know what made your companion - meaning ʿAli ؓ - audacious. He said: What is it, may you be bereft of your father? He said. Something I heard ʿAli ؓ say. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, az-Zubair and Abu Marthad on a mission, and we were all horsemen. He said: ʿGo to Rawdat Khakh, for there you will find a woman who has a letter with her from Hatib bin Abi Baltaʿah to the mushrikeen; bring it to me.ʿ So we went on our horses until we caught up with her where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told us, travelling on a camel of hers. He [Hatib] had written to the people of Makkah, telling them about the march of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We said to her. Where is the letter you have with you? She said: I do not have any letter. We made her camel kneel down and searched her luggage for it, but we did not find anything. My two companions said: We do not see any letter with her, I said: You know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not tell a lie. Then I swore: By the One by whom oaths are sworn, you will give us the letter or we will remove your clothes. She stretched out her hand to her girdle, which was wrapped around her, and brought out the letter. I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he has betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers; let me strike his neck. He said: ʿO Hatib, what made you do what you did?ʿ He said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, by Allah, it is not that I do not believe in Allah and His Messenger, but I wanted to do a favour for the people by means of which Allah might protect my family and my property, for every one of your Companions has some of his people there through whom Allah will protect his family and his property. He said: You have spoken the truth, do not say anything to him but good.ʿ ʻUmar said: O, Messenger of Allah, he betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers, let me strike his neck. He said. ʿls he not one of the people of Badr? How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon them and said. “Do what you like, for Paradise is guaranteed for you.ʻʼ ʻUmarʻs eyes filled with tears and he said: Allah, may He be exalted, and His Messenger know best. In fact, some people from the tribe of ʿAbdul Qais came to me to embrace Islam and busied me so much that I did not offer the two rakʿat which were offered after Zuhr compulsory prayer, and these two rakʿat (you have seen me offering) make up for those." That 'Abd Allah b. They sent me back to Umm Salamah with the same mission for which they had sent me to 'Aishah. Umm Salamah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibiting them, but later on I saw him praying them. When he prayed them, he had offered the 'Asr prayer. He then came to me while a number of women from Banu Haram from the Ansar were sitting with me. He prayed these two rak'ahs. I sent a slave girl to him and I told her: Stand beside him and tell him that Umm Salamah has asked: Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I heard you prohibiting these two rak'ahs (after the afternoon prayer) but I see you praying them yourself. If he makes a sign with his hand, step backward from him. The slave girl did so. When he finished prayer, he said: O daughter of Abu Umayyah, you asked about the praying of two rak'ahs after the 'Asr prayer, in fact, some people of 'Abd al-Qais has come to me with the news that their people had embraced Islam. They hindered me from praying the two rak'ahs after Zuhr prayer. It is those two rak'ahs (which I offered after the 'Asr prayer) (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1273)
