AbulJuwayriyyah al-Jarmi said: I found a red pitcher containing dinars in Byzantine territory during the reign of Mu'awiyah. A man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ belonging to Banu Sulaym was our ruler. He was called Ma'an ibn Yazid. I brought it to him. He apportioned it among the Muslims. He gave me the same portion which he gave to one of them. He then said: Had I not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: There is no reward except after taking the fifth (from the booty), I would have given you (the reward). He then presented his own share to me, but I refused.

أَصَبْتُ بِأَرْضِ الرُّومِ جَرَّةً حَمْرَاءَ فِيهَا دَنَانِيرُ فِي إِمْرَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَعَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَعْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَعْطَانِي مِنْهَا مِثْلَ مَا أَعْطَى رَجُلاً مِنْهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَوْلاَ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لاَ نَفْلَ إِلاَّ بَعْدَ الْخُمُسِ لأَعْطَيْتُكَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ يَعْرِضُ عَلَىَّ مِنْ نَصِيبِهِ فَأَبَيْتُ

[Machine] We were in the land of the Romans when a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , from the Banu Sulaim tribe named Ma'n ibn Yazid al-Sulami ordered us. He said, "I obtained a red jar containing dinars, so I brought it to him. He distributed it and said, 'If I hadn't heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say, 'There is no spoils except from the fifth,' I would have given it all to you.' He then offered me my share, but I said, 'I have no need for it.'"

كُنَّا بِأَرْضِ الرُّومِ فَأُمِّرَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَعْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ السُّلَمِيُّ قَالَ فَأَصَبْتُ جَرَّةً حَمْرَاءَ فِيهَا دَنَانِيرٌ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا فَخَمَّسَهَا وَقَالَ لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا نَفْلَ إِلَّا مِنَ الْخُمُسِ» لَأَعْطَيْتُكَ قَالَ فَعَرَضَ عَلِيَّ مِنْ نَصِيبِهِ فَقُلْتُ لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهِ

[Machine] I found a green jar in the Emirate of Mu'awiyah in the land of the enemy. We had a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , from the tribe of Sulaim, called Ma'n ibn Yazid. So I brought it to him and he divided it among the people and gave me the same amount as he gave a man from among them. Then he said, "If I hadn't heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say this and seen him do it, I wouldn't have given you anything." He then offered me his share, but I refused and said, "I am not more entitled to it than you are." He said, "And Ahmad ibn 'Ubayd informed us, from Al-Hasan ibn Al-Muthanna, from 'Affan, from Abu 'Awana, from 'Asim ibn Kulayb, with the same chain of narration."

وَجَدْتُ جَرَّةً خَضْرَاءَ فِي إِمَارَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ فِي أَرْضِ الْعَدُوِّ وَعَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَعْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَأَعْطَانِي مِثْلَ مَا أَعْطَى رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ وَرَأَيْتُهُ يَفْعَلُهُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَا نَفْلَ إِلَّا بَعْدَ الْخُمُسِ لَأَعْطَيْتُكَ وَأَخَذَ يَعْرِضُ عَلَيَّ مِنْ نَصِيبِهِ فَأَبَيْتُ وَقُلْتُ مَا أَنَا بِأَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنْكَ 12810 قَالَ وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا عَفَّانُ ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ثنا عَاصِمُ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ بِإِسْنَادِهِ مِثْلَهُ
