The supplication of Dhul-Nun
[AI] "I passed by Uthman ibn Affan in the mosque and greeted him, and he fixed his gaze on me, then he did not return my greeting. So I came to the Commander of the Believers Umar ibn al-Khattab and said twice, "Commander of the Believers, has something happened in Islam?" He said, "No, and what is that?" He said: I said, "It was only that I passed by Uthman just now in the mosque and greeted him, and he fixed his gaze on me, then he did not return my greeting." He said: Umar sent for Uthman and called him, and said, "What kept you from returning your brother's greeting?" Uthman said, "I did not do that." Saad said: I said, "Yes, you did." He said: Then he swore, and I swore. He said: Then Uthman remembered and said, "Yes, and I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him. You passed by me just now while I was speaking to myself about words I had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. No, by Allah, I never remember them except that a covering comes over my sight and my heart." He said, and Saad said: "I will tell you what they were. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned to us the first supplication, then a Bedouin came and distracted him, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, and I followed him. When I feared that he would get to his house before me, I struck the ground with my foot, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to me and said, "Who is this, Abu Ishaq?" He said: I said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah." He said, "What is it?" I said, "No, by Allah, except that you mentioned to us the first supplication, then this Bedouin came and distracted you." He said, "Yes: it is the supplication of Dhul-Nun when he was in the belly of the whale: "There is no god but You; glory be to You; indeed I was among the wrongdoers." [Al-Anbiya 87] No Muslim ever supplicates to his Lord with it for anything except that He answers him.""
