We used to estimate how long the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in the noon and the afternoon prayer, and we estimated that he stood in the first two rak’ahs of the noon prayer as long as it takes to recite thirty verses (of the Qur’an), such as A-L-M Tanzil al-Sajdah. And we estimated that he stood in the last two rak’ahs half the time he stood in the first two rak’ahs. We estimated that he stood in the first two rak’ahs of the afternoon prayer as long as he did in the last two at noon; and we estimated that he stood in the last two rak’ahs of the afternoon prayer half the time he did in first two. Abu Bakr in his narration has made no mention of Alif Lam Mim, Tanzil, but said: As long as it takes to recite thirty verses.

[Machine] We used to ensure the Prophet's ﷺ standing in the noon and afternoon prayers, so we stood in the first two units of the noon prayer for the duration of reciting Alif Lam Meem, the revelation of prostration verse, and we stood in the last two units for half of that. And we stood in the first two units of the afternoon prayer at the same duration as his standing in the last two units of the noon prayer. Similarly, we stood in the last two units of the afternoon prayer for half of that. This is the narration of Yahya bin Yahya.

[Machine] We used to observe the Prophet's ﷺ standing in prayer during the noon and afternoon prayers. We would observe his standing in the first two units of the noon prayer, equivalent to the recitation of Surah Sajdah, and we would observe his standing in the last two units to the extent of half of that. We would also observe his standing in the first two units of the afternoon prayer, equivalent to his standing in the last two units of the noon prayer, and in the last two units to the extent of half of that. This is according to the narration of Yahya ibn Yahya, and in the narration of Musaddad, it is mentioned to the extent of thirty verses, and the rest is similar in meaning.
