35. Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ

ahmad-zuhd:1026ʿAbdullāh from my father > Hāshim b. al-Qāsim > Jarīr > Abū al-Ḥasan b. Khālid > Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ

[Machine] He used to walk among the soldiers and say, "How many a white garment is soiled by its religion, and how many an esteemed person humiliates themselves for it. So rush to replace old sins with new good deeds. If any of you were to commit sins filling the space between the heavens and the earth, then followed it with a good deed, it is likely that the good deeds will overcome the sins until they defeat them."

ahmad-zuhd:1027ʿAbdullāh > Shaybān b. Abū Shaybah > Abū Hilāl > Qatādah > Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ

[Machine] There is no person, whether they are red or black, an Arab or a non-Arab, a free person or a slave, who I know is better than me in terms of righteousness, except for someone whom I would have wished to be in their place.

ahmad-zuhd:1028ʿAbdullāh from my father > Rawḥ > Hishām b. Abū ʿAbdullāh > Qatādah

[Machine] "Abu Ubaida said, 'I wish I were a sheep, and my family slaughtered me and ate my flesh, savoring the broth.'"

ahmad-zuhd:1029ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > Hishām from his father

[Machine] Umar, may Allah have mercy upon him, arrived in Sham, where the leaders and commanders of the land welcomed him. Umar asked, "Where is my brother?" They replied, "Who?" Umar said, "Abu Ubaidah." They said, "He has come to you now." So, Umar came on a camel with a bridle and greeted him, then asked him about his situation. Afterwards, he said to the people, "Go back," and he proceeded until he reached his house and entered it. He found nothing in his house except his sword, shield, and spear. Umar said to him, "If you had taken any belongings or things," Abu Ubaidah replied, "O commander of the believers, this will be enough for us."
