15. Trials of Ayyūb (Job)

١٥۔ بَلَاءُ أَيُّوبَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

[Machine] When the Prophet Job ﷺ was tested with the loss of his wealth, children, and health, he was thrown into a garbage dump. His wife would go out to earn what she could to feed him, but Satan envied him for it. People who used to come with bread and roasted meat to give as charity to Job's wife were told to drive her away, as she may transmit her husband's illness to them by touching them with her hand. The people started distancing themselves from her, saying, "Stay away from us, we will feed you, but do not come near us." Job was informed about this by his wife, and he thanked Allah for it. Whenever she would go out, people would treat her poorly because of the illness her husband had. Job would say to her, "Do not worry, my friend, I will not accept anything I am not happy with." "By Allah, if Jim were to speak just one word, all his troubles would be removed, and his wealth and children would return to him." Then she would come and inform him of what had happened, and he would say to her, "You have been visited by the enemy of Allah. He taught you this when Allah gave us wealth and children, and we believed in Him. Why should we not disbelieve in Him when He takes away from the one whom He has favored?" "If Allah cures me from this illness, I will flog you a hundred lashes." This is why Allah says, "And take in your hand a bunch of thin grass, and strike therewith, and break not your oath" [Surah Saad, 44]. By "thin grass," it means a handful of twigs.  

الزهد لأحمد:٤٥٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ أَخْبَرَنَا صَفْوَانُ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ

لَمَّا ابْتُلِيَ أَيُّوبُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِمَالِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ وَجَسَدِهِ طُرِحَ فِي الْمَزْبَلَةِ جَعَلَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ تَخْرُجُ تَكَسَّبُ عَلَيْهِ مَا تُطْعِمُهُ فَحَسَدَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ ذَلِكَ وَكَانَ يَأْتِي أَصْحَابَ الْخُبْزِ وَالشِّوَاءِ؛ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَتَصَدَّقُونَ عَلَيْهَا فَيَقُولُ اطْرُدُوا هَذِهِ الْمَرْأَةَ الَّتِي تَغْشَاكُمْ؛ فَإِنَّهَا تُعَالِجُ صَاحِبَهَا وَتَلْمَسُهُ بِيَدِهَا فَالنَّاسُ يَقْتَذِرُونَ طَعَامَكُمْ مِنْ أَجْلِهَا؛ إِنَّهَا تَأْتِيكُمْ وَتَغْشَاكُمْ فَجَعَلُوا لَا يُدْنُونَهَا مِنْهُمْ؛ وَيَقُولُونَ تَبَاعَدِي عَنَا وَنَحْنُ نُطْعِمُكِ وَلَا تَقْرَبِينَا فَأَخْبَرَتْ أَيُّوبَ بِذَلِكَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ﷻ عَلَى ذَلِكَ فَكَانَ يَلْقَاهَا إِذَا خَرَجَتْ كَالْمُتَحَزِّنِ بِمَا لَقِيَ أَيُّوبُ؛ فَيَقُولُ نَجِّ صَاحِبَكِ وَأَبَى إِلَّا مَا أَبَى فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْ تَكَلَّمَ بِكَلِمَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ لَكُشِفَ عَنْهُ كُلُّ ضُرٍّ وَلَرَجَعَ إِلَيْهِ مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهْ فَتَجِيءُ فَتُخْبِرُ أَيُّوبَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ بِذَلِكَ فَيَقُولُ لَهَا لَقِيَكِ عَدُوُّ اللَّهِ؛ فَلَقَّنَكِ هَذَا الْكَلَامَ لَمَّا أَعْطَانَا اللَّهُ ﷻ الْمَالَ وَالْوَلَدَ آمَنَّا بِهِ وَإِذَا قَبَضَ الَّذِي لَهُ نَكْفُرُ بِهِ؟ لَئِنْ أَقَامَنِي اللَّهُ ﷻ مِنْ مَرَضِي هَذَا لَأَجْلِدَنَّكَ مِائَةَ جَلْدَةٍ قَالَ فَلِذَلِكَ قَالَ اللَّهُ ﷻ {وَخُذْ بِيَدِكَ ضِغْثًا فَاضْرِبْ بِهِ وَلَا تَحْنَثْ} [ص 44] يَعْنِي بِالضِّغْثِ الْقَبْضَةَ مِنَ الْمَكَانِسِ

[Machine] Iblis said: "I have never afflicted Ayub with anything that brings me joy, except that when I hear his groans, I know that I have caused him pain."  

الزهد لأحمد:٤٥٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي بَيَانُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ حَدَّثَنِي بِشْرُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ أَخْبَرَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ لَيْثٍ عَنْ طَلْحَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ إِبْلِيسُ مَا أَصَبْتُ مِنْ أَيُّوبَ شَيْئًا قَطُّ أَفْرَحُ بِهِ؛ إِلَّا أَنِّي كُنْتُ إِذَا سَمِعْتُ أَنَينَهُ عَرَفْتُ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَعْتُهُ

[Machine] David looked at a flaming sword falling between the sky and the earth and said, "O Lord, what is this?" He said, "This is My curse; I will cast it into every dark house."  

الزهد لأحمد:٤٦٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ السُّلَمِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ رَبِيعٍ قَالَ

نَظَرَ دَاوُدُ إِلَى مِنْجَلٍ مِنْ نَارٍ يَهْوِي بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ فَقَالَ يَا رَبِّ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالَ هَذَا لَعْنَتِي؛ أُدْخِلُهَا بَيْتَ كُلِّ ظَلَّامٍ

[Machine] I heard some of our companions saying that Allah ﷻ revealed to Dawud ﷺ , "I have only sent desires on Earth to the weak among My servants. What about the heroes, don't they have desires as well?"  

الزهد لأحمد:٤٦١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَوْنٍ الْمَدِينِيُّ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ بَعْضَ أَصْحَابِنَا يَقُولُ أَوْحَى اللَّهُ ﷻ إِلَى دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ «إِنَّمَا أَنْزَلْتُ الشَّهَوَاتِ فِي الْأَرْضِ عَلَى الضُّعَفَاءِ مِنْ عِبَادِي مَا لِلْأَبْطَالِ وَلَهَا؟»

عَنِ النِّسَاءِ

[Machine] "The description of Hesoór is like this: 'And John pointed with his finger.'"  

الزهد لأحمد:٤٦٣حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ يَعْنِي الْأَنْصَارِيَّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ الْعَاصِ يَقُولُ مَا أَحَدٌ لَقِيَ اللَّهَ ﷻ إِلَّا بِذَنْبٍ إِلَّا يَحْيَى بْنَ [76] زَكَرِيَّا ثُمَّ قَرَأَ سَعِيدٌ {وَسَيِّدًا وَحَصُورًا} [آل عمران 39] فَرَفَعَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ

الْحَصُورُ ذَكَرُهُ مِثْلُ هَذَا «وَأَشَارَ يَحْيَى بِطَرْفِ إِصْبَعِهِ»  

ahmad-zuhd:464ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > al-Ṣibyān Liyaḥyá b. Zakariyyā Ādhhab Binā Falnalʿab > Mā Lillaʿb Khuliqnā

[Machine] "So Allah revealed, 'And We gave him judgement while he was still a boy'" [Maryam 12].  

الزهد لأحمد:٤٦٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مَعْمَرًا يَقُولُ قَالَ الصِّبْيَانُ لِيَحْيَى بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا اذْهَبْ بِنَا فَلْنَلْعَبْ قَالَ مَا لِلَّعْبِ خُلِقْنَا قَالَ

فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ﷻ {وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْحُكْمَ صَبِيًّا} [مريم 12]

[Machine] He said, "The food of Yahya, ﷺ , was grass, and even though he would cry out of fear of Allah, if a thorn were to touch his eye it would cut it. And indeed, tears would flow down his face."  

الزهد لأحمد:٤٦٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أبِي أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ أَخْبَرَنَا رَبَاحٌ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْخُرَاسَانِيُّ قَالَ يَعْنِي عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الْأَعْرَجِ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ

قَالَ «كَانَ طَعَامُ يَحْيَى بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ الْعُشْبَ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَيَبْكِي مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ ﷻ مَا لَوْ كَانَ الْقَارُ عَلَى عَيْنَيْهِ لَخَرَقَهُ وَلَقَدْ كَانَتِ الدُّمُوعُ اتَّخَذَتْ مَجْرًى فِي وَجْهِهِ»
