ʿAli bin Abi Talib entered upon Fatimah while Hasan and Husain were crying. He asked: Why are they crying? She replied: Due to hunger. ‘Ali went out and found a dinar in the market. He then came to Fatima and told her about it. She said: Go to such and such a Jew and get some flour for us. He came to the Jew and purchased flour with it. He said : Are you the son-in-law of him who believes that he is the Messenger of Allah. He said : Yes. The Jew said : Have your dinar with you and you will get the flour. Ali then went out and came to Fatima. He told her about the matter. She then said: Go to such and such a butcher and get some meat for us for a dirham. Ali went out and pawned the dinar for a dirham with him and got the meat, and brought it (to her). She then kneaded the flour, put the utensil on fire and baked the bread. She sent for her father : (i.e. the Prophet (SWAS). He came to them. She said to him : Messenger of Allah, I tell you all the matter. If you think it is lawful for us, we shall eat it and you will eat with us. She said: The matter is such and such. He said: eat in the name of Allah. So they ate it. While they were (eating) at their place, a boy cried adguring in the name of Allah and Islam: He was searching the dinar. The Messenger of Allah (SWAS) commanded and he was called in. He asked him. The boy replied, I lost it somewhere in the market. The Prophet (SWAS) said : ʿAli, go to the butcher and tell him that the Messenger of Allah (SWAS) has asked you : send the dinar to me and one dirham of yours will be due on me. The butcher returned it and the Messenger of Allah (SWAS) handed it to him (the boy).

قَالَتِ الْجُوعُ فَخَرَجَ عَلِيٌّ فَوَجَدَ دِينَارًا بِالسُّوقِ فَجَاءَ إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ فَأَخْبَرَهَا فَقَالَتِ اذْهَبْ إِلَى فُلاَنٍ الْيَهُودِيِّ فَخُذْ دَقِيقًا فَجَاءَ الْيَهُودِيَّ فَاشْتَرَى بِهِ دَقِيقًا فَقَالَ الْيَهُودِيُّ أَنْتَ خَتَنُ هَذَا الَّذِي يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَخُذْ دِينَارَكَ وَلَكَ الدَّقِيقُ فَخَرَجَ عَلِيٌّ حَتَّى جَاءَ فَاطِمَةَ فَأَخْبَرَهَا فَقَالَتِ اذْهَبْ إِلَى فُلاَنٍ الْجَزَّارِ فَخُذْ لَنَا بِدِرْهَمٍ لَحْمًا فَذَهَبَ فَرَهَنَ الدِّينَارَ بِدِرْهَمِ لَحْمٍ فَجَاءَ بِهِ فَعَجَنَتْ وَنَصَبَتْ وَخَبَزَتْ وَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَى أَبِيهَا فَجَاءَهُمْ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَذْكُرُ لَكَ فَإِنْ رَأَيْتَهُ لَنَا حَلاَلاً أَكَلْنَاهُ وَأَكَلْتَ مَعَنَا مِنْ شَأْنِهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَقَالَ كُلُوا بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ فَأَكَلُوا فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ مَكَانَهُمْ إِذَا غُلاَمٌ يَنْشُدُ اللَّهَ وَالإِسْلاَمَ الدِّينَارَ فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَدُعِيَ لَهُ فَسَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ سَقَطَ مِنِّي فِي السُّوقِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَا عَلِيُّ اذْهَبْ إِلَى الْجَزَّارِ فَقُلْ لَهُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَكَ أَرْسِلْ إِلَىَّ بِالدِّينَارِ وَدِرْهَمُكَ عَلَىَّ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهِ فَدَفَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَيْهِ

[Machine] Ali ibn Abi Talib entered upon Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , with Hasan and Husain, who were crying. He asked, "What makes them cry?" She said, "Hunger." He then said, "Send a message to your father." So she sent for the Messenger of Allah, who came with a small amount of dates in front of him. He said, "Your daughter says, O Messenger of Allah, if you have anything, please give it to us, for Hasan and Husain are crying." The Messenger of Allah commanded the messenger to carry him to them, and he came with him to Fatimah. Ali entered upon her while carrying the dates, and he said, "Did you find anything else?" She replied, "No." Ali said, "There is nothing in this that will satisfy them." So Ali went out and found a dinar in the market, and he brought it to Fatimah and informed her. She said, "Take it to the Jew and buy some flour for us, so that we can send it to the Messenger of Allah to eat with us." Ali went and pawned the dinar for a dirham and came back with it. Fatimah kneaded the dough, set the fire, and baked the bread. She then sent for her father, and when he came, there was a tray with bread, meat boiling, and flour. She said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, remember, if you see it, we will eat it, and you will eat from it as well." He said, "Eat in the name of Allah," and they ate. While they were in their place, a young boy began reciting the dinar by Allah and Islam. The Messenger of Allah commanded him to be brought, and he was invited to his presence. The Messenger of Allah asked him and he said, "My family sent me with a dinar to buy something, and I dropped it in the market." The Messenger of Allah said, "Go to the butcher and say, 'The Messenger of Allah says, send me the dinar, and your dirham will be upon me.'" He went and delivered the message, and the Messenger of Allah gave him the dinar.

So the Jew came and bought flour with the dinar. The Jew said, "Are you the one who claims to be the Messenger of Allah?" Ali said, "Yes." The Jew said, "Take your dinar and take the flour." So Ali went until he brought it to Fatimah (as) and informed her. She said, "Go to so-and-so, the butcher, and take some meat for us with a dirham." So he went and pawned the dinar for a dirham of meat. Then he brought it, and she kneaded it, and set it up, and baked it. Then she sent it to her father, and he came to them. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I mention it to you so that when you see it, it will be permissible for us to eat it, and you can eat from it as well." He said, "Eat in the name of Allah." So they ate. While they were eating, a boy said, "Allah and Islam redeem the dinar." The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to be called. He asked him, and he said, "I dropped it in the market." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Ali, go to the butcher and tell him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ orders you to send it to me with the dinar and your dirham on me." So he sent it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handed it over to him. The prominent sheikh narrates from Ali (ra) in this chapter, indicating that he spent it before sharing it at that time. We have also narrated from Ata ibn Yasar (ra) from Ali (ra) in this story, that the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to share it, but he was not recognized, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to eat it. The apparent meaning of this narration is that he conditioned sharing it at that time and allowed eating it before the year had passed. The hadiths that mention the condition of sharing it for a year are stronger and more abundant, so they are more deserving. It is possible that he allowed him to spend it before a year had passed due to the necessity of it, and the story indicates that. It is also possible that he did not condition a year for a small amount, and Allah knows best.
