Modesty and holding back what you say is a sign of Iman

tirmidhi:2027Aḥmad b. Manīʿ > Yazīd b. Hārūn > Abū Ghassān Muḥammad b. Muṭarrif > Ḥassān b. ʿAṭiyyah > Abū Umāmah

from the Prophet ﷺ ˹who˺ said: Modesty and hesitation ˹in speech˺ are two branches of Iman, ˹while˺ crudeness and ˹bluntness˺ (or excessive speech) are two branches of hypocrisy.

Abū ʿIsá (al-Tirmidhī) said: this is a Hasan-Gharib hadith and we know it only from the narration of Abū Ghassān Muhammad b. Muṭarrif. al-ʿiyy is inarticulateness or the lack of speech, while al-badhāʾ is obscenity in speech. al-bayān is an abundance of speech, like those orators who deliver speeches and elaborate extensively in their words, praising people in ways that do not please Allah.
