[Machine] Abu Ayub ibn Zaid al-Ansari, who was visited by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he migrated to Madinah, fought in the land of the Romans. He passed by Muawiyah and he declined to give him anything. Then he returned from his expedition and passed by him again, and he declined to give him anything and did not even lift his head. Abu Ayub then said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed me that we will see his sign after him." Muawiyah asked, "What is your request?" Abu Ayub replied, "We were commanded to be patient." Muawiyah said, "Then be patient." Abdullah ibn Abbas came from Basra and Ali ordered him to provide for him. Abdullah said, "O Abu Ayub, I intend to move you out of my home just as I did for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So he ordered his family to leave, and he gave him everything and closed the house for him. When he was about to leave, Ali asked him, "What is your request?" Abu Ayub said, "My request is my gift and eight slaves who work on my land." Ali had originally given him four thousand and then increased it five times, giving him twenty thousand and forty slaves.
