[Machine] I sat with Fadalah ibn 'Ubayd, a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and I said, "Advise me, may Allah have mercy on you." He said, "Remember three guidelines that Allah will benefit you with them, if you can. If you can be knowledgeable without being known, then do so. If you can listen without speaking, then do so. And if you can sit without being approached, then do so."  

الطبراني:١٥٩١٩aحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ الْمُهَاجِرِ عَنِ ابْنِ مُحَيْرِيزٍ قَالَ

صَحِبْتُ فَضَالَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ أَوْصِنِي رَحِمَكَ اللهُ قَالَ احْفَظْ عَنِّي ثَلَاثَ خِلَالٍ يَنْفَعُكَ اللهُ بِهِنَّ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَعْرِفَ وَلَا تُعْرَفَ فَافْعَلْ وَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَسْمَعَ وَلَا تَكَلَّمَ فَافْعَلْ وَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَجْلِسَ وَلَا يُجْلَسَ إِلَيْكَ فَافْعَلْ
