The Prophet ﷺ used to shorten his prayer while wanting to lengthen it

The Prophet ﷺ said: “I stand in prayer intending to lengthen it, but then I hear a child crying, so I make my prayer brief, out of dislike for causing hardship to his mother.”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «إِنِّي لأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا، فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاَتِي كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ».

My father said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whenever I stand for prayer, I want to prolong it but on hearing the cries of a child, I would shorten it as I dislike to put its mother in trouble."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَقُومُ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاَتِي كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ

I stand up to pray and intend to prolong it; but when I hear the cry of a boy I shorten if for fear that his mother might be distressed.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَقُومُ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ

Messenger of Allah said: "Indeed I hear the crying of a small boy while I am in Salat, so I shorten it in fear that his mother may be tormented."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ وَأَنَا فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَأُخَفِّفُ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ تُفْتَتَنَ أُمُّهُ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

"I stand in prayer, then I hear a child crying, so I make my prayer brief, because I do not want to cause hardship for his mother."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنِّي لأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأُوجِزُ فِي صَلاَتِي كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I start prayer and I want to make it long, but then I hear an infant crying, so I make my prayer short, because I know the distress caused to the mother by his crying.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَدْخُلُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ إِطَالَتَهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاَتِي مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ لِوَجْدِ أُمِّهِ بِبُكَائِهِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I hear an infant crying so I make the prayer short.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I get up to perform prayer and I intend to make it long, but then I hear an infant crying, so I make it short, because I do not like to cause distress to his mother.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ

My father said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whenever I stand for prayer, I want to prolong it but on hearing the cries of a child, I would shorten it as I dislike to put its mother in trouble." (Using translation from Bukhārī 868)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنِّي لَأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلَاتِي كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ

قَالَ مَا صليت وراء إمام أخف صلاة من صَلاةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ولاَ أَتَمَّ وَإن كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَيَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ وَرَاءَهُ فَيُخَفِّفُ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ تُفْتَنَ أُمُّهُ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قال إني لأسمع صوت الصبي فأخفف مخافة أن تفتن أمه

"I stand in prayer, then I hear a child crying, so I make my prayer brief, because I do not want to cause hardship for his mother." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 825)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنِّي لَأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلَاتِي كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ»

"إِنِّى لأَقومُ في الصَّلاةِ وأَنا أُريدُ أَنْ أُطوِّلَ فيها فأَسمَعُ بُكاءَ الصَّبىِّ فأَتَجَوَّزُ كراهية أَنْ يَشُقَّ على أُمِّهِ".

"إِنِّى لأقُومُ إِلَى الصَّلاِة وَأَنَا أريدُ أنْ أُطَوِّل فِيها. فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبىِّ فَأتَجَوَّزُ فِى صَلَاتِى كَرَاهيَة أَنْ أشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ".

"إِنّى لأسْمَعُ صَوْتَ الصَّبىِّ وَأَنَا فِى الصَّلَاةِ فأُخَفِّفُ مَخَافَة أَن تُفْتَن أُمُهُ" .

"إِنِّى لأَسْمَعُ صَوْت الصَّبىِّ وَرائى فأُخفِّفُ الصَّلاةَ شَفَقًا أَن تُفْتَن أمُّهُ".

"إِنِّى لأُخَفِّف الصَّلَاةَ أَن أَسْمَعَ بُكَاءَ الصَّبىِّ خَشْيَة أن تَفْتَتِنَ أُمُّهُ".

"وَاللهِ إِنِّي لأَسمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبيِّ وَأَنَا فِي الصَّلاةِ فَأخَفِّفُ مخافَةَ أَنْ تَفْتَتِنَ أُمُّهُ".

"عَنْ عَطَاءٍ: أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ قَالَ: إِنِّى لأُخَفِّفُ الصَّلَاةَ إن أَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِىِّ خشية أن تفتتن أمه".
