Collected by Bukhārī, Abū Dāwūd, Nasāʾī, Ṭabarānī, Nasāʾī's Kubrá, Bayhaqī, SuyūṭīSome people went to Sahl bin Saʿd As-Saʿidi and told him that they had different opinions regarding the wood of the pulpit. They asked him about it and he said, "By Allah, I know of what wood the pulpit was made, and no doubt I saw it on the very first day when Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his seat on it. Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for such and such an Ansari woman (and Sahl mentioned her name) and said to her, 'Order your slave-carpenter to prepare for me some pieces of wood (i.e. pulpit) on which I may sit at the time of addressing the people.' So she ordered her slave-carpenter and he made it from the tamarisk of the forest and brought it (to the woman). The woman sent that (pulpit) to Messenger of Allah ﷺ who ordered it to be placed here. Then I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying on it and then bowed on it. Then he stepped back, got down and prostrated on the ground near the foot of the pulpit and again ascended the pulpit. After finishing the prayer he faced the people and said, 'I have done this so that you may follow me and learn the way I pray.' "

Abu Bakr came from his house at As-Sunh on a horse. He dismounted and entered the Mosque, but did not speak to the people till he entered upon ʿAisha and went straight to Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was covered with Hibra cloth (i.e. a kind of Yemenite cloth). He then uncovered the Prophet's face and bowed over him and kissed him and wept, saying, "Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you. By Allah, Allah will never cause you to die twice. As for the death which was written for you, has come upon you." Narrated Ibn ʿAbbas: Abu Bakr went out while ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab was talking to the people. Abu Bakr said, "Sit down, O ʿUmar!" But ʿUmar refused to sit down. So the people came to Abu Bakr and left ʿUmar. Abu Bakr said, "To proceed, if anyone amongst you used to worship Muhammad , then Muhammad is dead, but if (anyone of) you used to worship Allah, then Allah is Alive and shall never die. Allah said:--"Muhammad is no more than an Apostle, and indeed (many) apostles have passed away before him..(till the end of the Verse )......Allah will reward to those who are thankful." (3.144) By Allah, it was as if the people never knew that Allah had revealed this Verse before till Abu Bakr recited it and all the people received it from him, and I heard everybody reciting it (then). Narrated Az-Zuhri: Saʿid bin Al-Musaiyab told me that ʿUmar said, "By Allah, when I heard Abu Bakr reciting it, my legs could not support me and I fell down at the very moment of hearing him reciting it, declaring that the Prophet ﷺ had died."

[AI] While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "A man from the people of Paradise will appear before you now." Then a man from the Ansar came out, his beard wet with water from his ablution, holding his shoes in his left hand. The next day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man from the people of Paradise will appear before you now." The same man appeared in the same state as the previous day. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As followed him and said, "I have made a vow to my father not to visit him for three nights. If you allow me, I will stay with you until it is time for my right hand to be unleashed." He allowed him, and Anas said, "Abdullah would also spend a night or three nights with him, and I would not see him do anything during the night except that he remembered Allah and glorified Him until he would stand for the Fajr prayer and perform ablution. Abdullah said, "Except for good." When the three nights had passed, I felt belittled by his actions, so I said to him, "O Abdullah, there was no anger or migration between me and my father, but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying to you three times in three gatherings, 'A man from the people of Paradise will appear before you now,' and you appeared in those gatherings. So, I wanted to come to you and see your actions, but I did not see you doing any major deeds. What has caused you to attain what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said?" He replied, "It is nothing but what you have seen." So, I turned away from him. When I was about to leave, he called me and said, "It is nothing but what you have seen, but I do not find any ill feeling towards any Muslim nor do I envy him for the good that Allah has given him." Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As said, "This is what has reached you, and it is what we cannot bear."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a journey with his companions when they became extremely thirsty. Two men from his companions, whom I think were Ali and Zubayr or others, went ahead and found a woman with two water containers on a camel. They said to her, "Answer the call of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." She asked, "Who is the Messenger of Allah, this Jew?" They replied, "He is the one you are addressing, and he is truly the Messenger of Allah." They brought her to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that the water be poured into a vessel made from the two containers. He then asked for the water to be returned to the containers, and ordered the loosening of the knots on the containers. They were opened, and the people were instructed to fill their containers and drink. That day, no vessel or container was left un-filled. Imran said, "It seemed as if it wasn't filled except to be filled." The Prophet ﷺ ordered his garment to be spread out, and his companions brought their provisions until his garment was filled. He told the woman to go, saying, "We did not take anything from your water, but it was Allah who gave us to drink." She went and informed her family, saying, "I have met the most knowledgeable person or indeed he is the Messenger of Allah." The people of that village embraced Islam, as reported in Sahihain from the hadith of Awf ibn Abi Jamilah. The last incident is that the Prophet ﷺ gave a container of water to the one who had an impurity. He said to him, "Go and pour it over yourself while standing and see what happens to its water." This was narrated by Abu Abdullah Al-Haafiz, Ahmad ibn Ja'far Al-Qatti'i, Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and Yahya ibn Sa'id from Awf, mentioning it in a similar manner.

[AI] By Allah, I truly know what it is, and indeed, I saw it on the first day it was born. And on the first day the Messenger of Allah sat on it, the Messenger of Allah sent it to a woman named Sahlah and asked her to have her servant, the carpenter, make some wooden sticks for me to sit on when I speak to the people. So she ordered and he made them out of the branches of the forest. Then she brought them and sent them to the Messenger of Allah, and he commanded them to be placed here. Then I saw the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , praying on it and saying takbeer while he was on it. Then he performed rukoo' while he was on it. Then he went down to al-Qahhara (a valley in Makkah) and prostrated at the base of the pulpit. Then he returned, and when he finished he faced the people and said, "O people, I did this so that you may follow in my footsteps and learn from my prayer."

Some people came to Sahl b. Sa'd and began to differ about the wood of which the (Prophet's pulpit was made. He (Sahl b. Sa'd) said: By Allah, I know of which wood it is made and who made it, and the day when I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seated himself on it on the first day. I said to him: O Abu Abbas (kunyah of Sabl b. Sa'd), narrate to us (all these facts), He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a person to a woman asking her to allow her slave, a carpenter, to work on woods (to prepare a pulpit) so that I should talk to the people (sitting on it). Abu Hazim said: He (Sahl b. Sa'd) pointed out the name of (that lady) that day. So he (the carpenter) made (a pulpit) with these three steps. Then the Messengerof Allah ﷺ commanded it to be placed here (where it is lying now). It was fashioned out of the wood of al-Ghaba. And I saw the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) standing upon it and glorifying Allah and the people also glorified Allah after him, while he was on the pulpit. He then raised (his head from prostration) and stepped back (on his heels) till he prostrated himself at the base of pulpit, and then returned (to the former place and this movement of one or two steps continued) till the prayer was complete. He then turned towards the people and said: O people, I have done it so that you should follow me and learn (my mode of) prayer. (Using translation from Muslim 544a)

[AI] Al-Abbas al-Asamm, I am al-Rabi' and I am al-Shafi'i and I am Malik. Abu Ahmad al-Mihrajani informed us that Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Muzakki narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim who narrated from Ibn Bukayr who narrated from Malik who narrated from Abu al-Rijal Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman who narrated from his mother Ummarah bint Abd al-Rahman that she heard him saying, "A man bought a piece of land during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he began to cultivate it. But then a defect became apparent in it, so he asked the owner of the land to either remove the defect or take it back. The owner of the land swore that he would not do that. Ummul Mushtari went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned this to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'It is most likely that he will not do good.' When the owner of the land heard this, he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'The wording of this narration is from Ibn Bukayr, but it is not mentioned in the narration of al-Shafi'i or that he would take it back.' The owner of the land said, 'He cured it and I have benefited from it.' Abu Sa'id narrated from Abu al-Abbas from al-Rabi' from al-Shafi'i who said, 'The narration of Ummarah is mursal (disconnected) and the people of hadith do not consider mursal narrations as evidence. If the hadith of Ummarah was accepted, it would imply that the defendant's word should not be taken. The Sheikh said, 'Harithah ibn Abu al-Rijal has also narrated it from his father from Ummarah from Aishah, but Harithah is weak and cannot be relied upon, and Yahya ibn Sa'id has also narrated it from Abu al-Rijal, but it is an abridged version that does not mention the curing of the defect."
