'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pray in the night for a long time, and when he prayed standing be bowed in a standing posture, and when he prayed sitting, he bowed in a sitting posture.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَيْلاً طَوِيلاً فَإِذَا صَلَّى قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

I fell ill in Persia and therefore, prayed in a sitting posture, and I asked 'A'isha about it and she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for a long time in the night sitting.

كُنْتُ شَاكِيًا بِفَارِسَ فَكُنْتُ أُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ عَائِشَةَ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَيْلاً طَوِيلاً قَائِمًا فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ

I asked 'A'isha about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the night (i. e. Tahajjud prayer) She replied: He used to pray for a long time standing and for a long time sitting in the night, and when he recited the Qur'an while standing, he would bow himself from the standing position, and when he recited while sitting, he would bow from the sitting position.

عَنْ صَلاَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِاللَّيْلِ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي لَيْلاً طَوِيلاً قَائِمًا وَلَيْلاً طَوِيلاً قَاعِدًا وَكَانَ إِذَا قَرَأَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray standing at night for a long time, and used to pray sitting at night for a long time. When he prayed standing, he bowed standing, and when he prayed sitting, he bowed sitting.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَيْلاً طَوِيلاً قَائِمًا وَلَيْلاً طَوِيلاً قَاعِدًا فَإِذَا صَلَّى قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

"I asked her about the voluntary Salat of Messenger of Allah (S), she said: 'He would pray long into the night standing, and long into the night sitting. So when he recited and he was standing, he would bow and prostrate whole he was standing, and when he recited while he was sitting, he bowed and prostrated while he was sitting.'"

عَنْ صَلاَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ تَطَوُّعِهِ قَالَتْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي لَيْلاً طَوِيلاً قَائِمًا وَلَيْلاً طَوِيلاً قَاعِدًا فَإِذَا قَرَأَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ رَكَعَ وَسَجَدَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ وَإِذَا قَرَأَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ رَكَعَ وَسَجَدَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray for a long time at night. If he started to pray standing, he would bow standing and if he started to pray sitting, he would bow sitting."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَيْلاً طَوِيلاً فَإِذَا صَلَّى قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray standing and sitting. If he started to pray standing, he would bow standing and if he started to pray sitting, he would bow sitting."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَائِمًا وَقَاعِدًا فَإِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلاَةَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلاَةَ قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

“I asked ‘Aishah about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at night. She said: ‘He used to pray for a long time at night standing up, and for a long time at night sitting down. If he prayed standing, he would bow standing, and if he prayed sitting, he would bow sitting.’”

“I asked ‘Aishah about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at night. She said: ‘He used to pray for a long time at night standing up, and for a long time at night sitting down. عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِفَقَالَتْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَائِمًا وَلَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَاعِدًا فَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

[AI] "I used to complain to Fares about being seated during prayer, so I asked Aisha about it. She said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray during the night, either standing for a long time or sitting for a long time. When he recited while standing, he would either perform prostrations or show humility while standing. And when he recited while sitting, he would perform prostrations while sitting as well."

كُنْتُ شَاكِيًا بِفَارِسَ فَكُنْتُ أُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ عَائِشَةَ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَائِمًا وَلَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَاعِدًا فَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ أَوْ خَشَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray standing at night for a long time, and used to pray sitting at night for a long time. When he prayed standing, he bowed standing, and when he prayed sitting, he bowed sitting. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 955)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to pray long nights, both standing and sitting. I asked: "So how did he perform his prayers?" She said: "When he recited while standing, he would perform a raka'a while standing, and when he recited while sitting, he would perform a raka'a while sitting."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَائِمًا وَلَيْلًا طَوِيلًا جَالِسًا قُلْتُ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ يَصْنَعُ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ إِذَا قَرَأَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا قَرَأَ جَالِسًا رَكَعَ جَالِسًا

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to pray long standing prayers at night and long sitting prayers at night. I asked, "How did he used to do that?" She said, "When he recited while standing, he performed two units of prayer while standing, and when he recited while sitting, he performed two units of prayer while sitting."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَائِمًا وَلَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَاعِدًا قَالَ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ كَانَ يَصْنَعُ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ إِذَا قَرَأَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray standing and sitting. If he started to pray standing, he would bow standing and if he started to pray sitting, he would bow sitting." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1647)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَائِمًا وَقَاعِدًا فَإِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا

[AI] About the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she said: He used to pray four before noon prayer, two after it, two before afternoon prayer, two after sunset prayer, and two after night prayer. Then he would pray nine during the night. I asked: Was he standing or sitting? She said: He used to pray standing for a long time and sitting for a long time. I asked: How did he do when he was standing? And how did he do when he was sitting? She said: When he recited while standing, he would perform the prostration while standing, and when he recited while sitting, he would perform the prostration while sitting, and he would perform two units before the dawn prayer.

عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ وَثِنْتَيْنِ بَعْدَهَا وَثِنْتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْعَصْرِ وَثِنْتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَثِنْتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ تِسْعًا قُلْتُ أَقَائِمًا أَوْ قَاعِدًا؟ قَالَتْ يُصَلِّي لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَائِمًا وَلَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَاعِدًا قُلْتُ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ إِذَا كَانَ قَائِمًا؟ وَكَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ إِذَا كَانَ قَاعِدًا؟ قَالَتْ إِذَا قَرَأَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا وَرَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ

“I asked ‘Aishah about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at night. She said: ‘He used to pray for a long time at night standing up, and for a long time at night sitting down. [AI] Regarding the prayer of the Messenger of Allahﷺ she said: "He used to pray four units before noon, then he would go out and pray, then he would return and pray two units, then he would go out to the west, then he would return and pray two units, then he would go out to the night, then he would return and pray two units, then he would pray nine units of the night." عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ «كَانَ يُصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ فَيُصَلِّي ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ فَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى الْمَغْرِبِ ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ فَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى الْعِشَاءِ ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ فَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ تِسْعًا» قَالَ فَقُلْتُ قَاعِدًا أَوْ قَائِمًا؟ قَالَتْ «يُصَلِّي لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا قَائِمًا» قُلْتُ فَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَائِمًا؟ قَالَتْ «إِذَا قَرَأَ قَائِمًا رَكَعَ قَائِمًا وَإِذَا قَرَأَ قَاعِدًا رَكَعَ قَاعِدًا ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ»
