السيوطي:٤-٢٤٨٤b –

"عَنْ حَسَنِ بْنِ حَسَنٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ: أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ خَطبَ إِلَى عَلىٍّ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ، فقال له علىٌّ: إنما تصغر عن ذلك، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: سَمعْتُ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ يَقُولُ: كُلُّ سبَبٍ وَنَسبٍ مُنْقَطِعٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيامَةِ إِلَّا سَبَبِى وَنَسَبِى، فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ لِى مِنْ رَسُول الله ﷺ سَبَبٌ وَنَسَبٌ، فَقالَ عَلِىٌّ لحَسَنٍ وَحُسَيْنٍ زَوِّجَا عمَّكُما فَقَالَا: هِىَ امْرأَةُ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ تَخْتارُ لِنَفْسِهَا، فَقامَ عَلِىٌّ مُغْضَبًا فَأَمْسَكَ الْحَسَنُ بثَوْبِهِ وَقَالَ: لَا صْبرَ عَلَى هجْرَانِكَ يَا أَبَتاهُ قالَ: فَزَوَّجَاه".

So I wanted to have a connection and lineage from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Marry your two cousins, Hasan and Husain. They said: It is a woman's choice for herself. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) got angry, and Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) held onto his garment and said, 'Have patience with your separation, O our father.' So, they were married."

He said: 'If marriage was not permissible for a virgin except by her permission, it would not be permissible to marry her until she had a say in it for herself.'"
