"عن عمر قالَ: نظرتُ فِى هذَا الأمرِ فجعلتُ إِذَا أردتُ الدنيا أضْررتُ بالآخرةِ، وإذا أردتُ الآخرَة أَضْررتُ بالدُّنيا فإِذَا كان الأمرُ هكذَا فأضروا بالفَاتِيةِ".

[Machine] "I looked into this matter and found that if I desire the worldly life, I harm the Hereafter, and if I desire the Hereafter, I harm the worldly life. So, if the matter is like this, harm the ephemeral."

الزهد لأحمد:٦٦٥ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي شُجَاعُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ إِنَّ عُمَرَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ قَالَ

«نَظَرْتُ فِي هَذَا الْأَمْرِ فَجَعَلْتُ إِذَا أَرَدْتُ الدُّنْيَا أَضْرَرْتُ بِالْآخِرَةِ وَإِذَا أَرَدْتُ الْآخِرَةَ أَضْرَرْتُ بِالدُّنْيَا فَإِذَا كَانَ الْأَمْرُ هَكَذَا فَأَضِرُّوا بِالْفَانِيَةِ»
