Jabir said, "In Madina, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was thrown from a horse onto a palm trunk and dislocated his foot. We used to visit him in the room of 'A'isha. We came upon him while he was praying sitting down and we prayed standing behind him. He indicates to us that we should sit down. When he finished the prayer, he said, 'When the Imam prays sitting, then pray sitting. When he prays standing, then pray standing. Do not stand while the imam is sitting as the Persians do with their great men.'"

عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ صُرِعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ فَرَسٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ عَلَى جِذْعِ نَخْلَةٍ فَانْفَكَّتْ قَدَمُهُ فَكُنَّا نَعُودُهُ فِي مَشْرُبَةٍ لِعَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَأَتَيْنَاهُ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فَصَلَّيْنَا قِيَامًا ثُمَّ أَتَيْنَاهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي الْمَكْتُوبَةَ قَاعِدًا فَصَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَهُ قِيَامًا فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْنَا أَنِ اقْعُدُوا فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ إِذَا صَلَّى الإِمَامُ قَاعِدًا فَصَلُّوا قُعُودًا وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَائِمًا فَصَلُّوا قِيَامًا وَلاَ تَقُومُوا وَالإِمَامُ قَاعِدٌ كَمَا تَفْعَلُ فَارِسُ بِعُظَمَائِهِمْ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode a horse in Medina. It threw him off at the root of a date-palm. His foot was injured. We visited him to inquire about his illness. We found him praying sitting in the apartment of Aisha. We, therefore, stood, (praying) behind him. He kept silent. We again visited him to inquire about his illness. He offered the obligatory prayer sitting. We, therefore, stood (praying) behind him; he made a sign to us and we sat down. When he finished the prayer, he said: When the imam prays sitting, pray sitting; and when the imam prays standing, pray standing, and do not act as the people of Persia used to act with their chiefs (i.e. the people stood and they were sitting).

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ was thrown off a horse onto the trunk of a palm tree and his foot was dislocated. We went to him to console him and found him praying, so we prayed with his prayer while standing. When he finished praying, he said, "Indeed, the imam is appointed to be followed, so if he prays standing, then you also pray standing. And if he prays sitting, then you also pray sitting. We then brought his horse back, and found him praying voluntary prayers while sitting. So we prayed while standing, then we approached him again and found him praying the obligatory prayers while sitting. He then told us to stand up, and gestured for us to sit, so we sat. Then he said, "When the Imam prays while sitting, then pray sitting. And when the Imam prays while standing, then pray standing. Do not do as the Persians do to their noble ones."

رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ فَرَسٍ لَهُ عَلَى جِذْعِ نَخْلَةٍ فَانْفَكَّتْ قَدَمُهُ فَقَعَدَ فِي بَيْتِ عَائِشَةَ ؓ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ نَعُودُهُ فَوَجَدْنَاهُ يُصَلِّي تَطَوُّعًا فَصَلَّى قَاعِدًا وَنَحْنُ قِيَامٌ ثُمَّ أَتَيْنَاهُ فَوَجَدْنَاهُ يُصَلِّي صَلَاةً مَكْتُوبَةً قَاعِدًا قَالَ فَقُمْنَا فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْنَا فَجَلَسْنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ ائْتَمُّوا بِالْإِمَامِ إِنْ صَلَّى قَاعِدًا فَصَلُّوا قُعُودًا وَإِنْ صَلَّى قَائِمًا فَصَلُّوا قِيَامًا وَلَا تَفْعَلُوا كَمَا تَفْعَلُ فَارِسَ لِعُظَمَائِهَا

"إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الإِمامُ ليؤْتمَّ بِه، فإِن صلَّى قَائما فصلُّوا قيامًا، وإِن صلَّى جالسًا فصلُّوا جُلوسًا، ولا تَقوموا وهو جالسٌ كما يفعلُ أَهلُ فارسَ بِعُظَمائها ".
