I asked ʿAli, "Do you have the knowledge of any Divine Inspiration besides what is in Allah's Book?" ʿAli replied, "No, by Him Who splits the grain of corn and creates the soul. I don't think we have such knowledge, but we have the ability of understanding which Allah may endow a person with, so that he may understand the Qur'an, and we have what is written in this paper as well." I asked, "What is written in this paper?" He replied, "(The regulations of) blood-money, the freeing of captives, and the judgment that no Muslim should be killed for killing an infidel."

قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ ؓ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ شَىْءٌ مِنَ الْوَحْىِ إِلاَّ مَا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ مَا أَعْلَمُهُ إِلاَّ فَهْمًا يُعْطِيهِ اللَّهُ رَجُلاً فِي الْقُرْآنِ وَمَا فِي هَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةِ قُلْتُ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قَالَ الْعَقْلُ وَفَكَاكُ الأَسِيرِ وَأَنْ لاَ يُقْتَلَ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍ

I heard Abu Juhaifa saying, "I asked ʿAli 'Have you got any Divine literature apart from the Qur'an?' (Once he said...apart from what the people have?) ʿAli replied, 'By Him Who made the grain split (germinate) and created the soul, we have nothing except what is in the Qur'an and the ability (gift) of understanding Allah's Book which He may endow a man with and we have what is written in this paper.' I asked, 'What is written in this paper?' He replied, 'Al-ʿAql (the regulation of Diya), about the ransom of captives, and the Judgment that a Muslim should not be killed in Qisas (equality in punishment) for killing a disbeliever." I asked ʿAli "Do you have anything Divine literature besides what is in the Qur'an?" Or, as Uyaina once said, "Apart from what the people have?" ʿAli said, "By Him Who made the grain split (germinate) and created the soul, we have nothing except what is in the Qur'an and the ability (gift) of understanding Allah's Book which He may endow a man, with and what is written in this sheet of paper." I asked, "What is on this paper?" He replied, "The legal regulations of Diya (Blood-money) and the (ransom for) releasing of the captives, and the judgment that no Muslim should be killed in Qisas (equality in punishment) for killing a Kafir (disbeliever).

سَأَلْتُ عَلِيًّا ؓ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ شَىْءٌ مِمَّا لَيْسَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ وَقَالَ ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ مَرَّةً مَا لَيْسَ عِنْدَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ مَا عِنْدَنَا إِلاَّ مَا فِي الْقُرْآنِ إِلاَّ فَهْمًا يُعْطَى رَجُلٌ فِي كِتَابِهِ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قُلْتُ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قَالَ الْعَقْلُ وَفِكَاكُ الأَسِيرِ وَأَنْ لاَ يُقْتَلَ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍ

"I said to 'Ali: O Commander of the Believers! Do you have anything written that is not in Allah's Book?' He said: 'By the One Who splits the seed and creates the soul, I have not learned from it except what understanding of the Qur'an Allah gives to a man, and what is in this sheet of paper.' I said: 'What is in the paper?' He said: 'It is the 'Aql, the (ransom for) release of captives, and the judgement that no believer is killed for a disbeliever.'"

قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ سَوْدَاءُ فِي بَيْضَاءَ لَيْسَ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ قَالَ لاَ وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ مَا عَلِمْتُهُ إِلاَّ فَهْمًا يُعْطِيهِ اللَّهُ رَجُلاً فِي الْقُرْآنِ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قُلْتُ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قَالَ فِيهَا الْعَقْلُ وَفِكَاكُ الأَسِيرِ وَأَنْ لاَ يُقْتَلَ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو

We asked ‘Ali ؓ : Do you have something from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ apart from the Qurʿan? He said: No, by the One who split the seed and created the soul, except the understanding that Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, helps a person to acquire of the Qurʿan or what is in the document.I said: What is in the document? He said: Diyah (blood money), ransom of prisoners and muslim should be killed in retaliation for a kafir.

سَأَلْنَا عَلِيًّا هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ شَيْءٌ بَعْدَ الْقُرْآنِ؟ قَالَ لَا وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ إِلا فَهْمٌ يُؤْتِيهِ اللهُ ﷻ رَجُلًا فِي الْقُرْآنِ أَوْ مَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قُلْتُ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ؟ قَالَ الْعَقْلُ وَفِكَاكُ الْأَسِيرِ وَلا يُقْتَلُ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍ

"I said to 'Ali: O Commander of the Believers! Do you have anything written that is not in Allah's Book?' He said: 'By the One Who splits the seed and creates the soul, I have not learned from it except what understanding of the Qur'an Allah gives to a man, and what is in this sheet of paper.' I said: 'What is in the paper?' He said: 'It is the 'Aql, the (ransom for) release of captives, and the judgement that no believer is killed for a disbeliever.'" قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ هَلْ عَلِمْتَ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْوَحْيِ إِلَّا مَا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى؟ قَالَ «لَا وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ مَا أَعْلَمُهُ إِلَّا فَهْمًا يُعْطِيهِ اللَّهُ الرَّجُلَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ» قُلْتُ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ؟ قَالَ «الْعَقْلُ وَفِكَاكُ الْأَسِيرِ وَلَا يُقْتَلُ مُسْلِمٌ بِمُشْرِكٍ»

"I heard Abu Juhaifah say: 'We asked 'Ali: "Do you have anything from the Messenger of Allah apart from the Qur'an?" He said: "No, by the One who splits the seeds and creates the soul, unless Allah gives a slave understanding of His Book, or except this sheet." I said: "What is in the sheet?" He said: "In it are (the regulations concerning) blood money and the freeing of captives and (the rule) that no Muslim should be killed for killing a disbeliever." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4744)

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جُحَيْفَةَ يَقُولُ سَأَلْنَا عَلِيًّا هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ شَيْءٌ سِوَى الْقُرْآنِ؟ فَقَالَ لَا وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ إِلَّا أَنْ يُعْطِيَ اللهُ عَبْدًا فَهْمًا فِي كِتَابِهِ أَوْ مَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قُلْنَا وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ؟ قَالَ «فِيهَا الْعَقْلُ وَفِكَاكُ الْأَسِيرِ وَأَنْ لَا يُقْتَلَ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍ»

[Machine] I asked Ali, "Do you have anything from the Prophet ﷺ other than the Quran?" He replied, "No, by the One who split the seed and created the soul, except that Allah may grant understanding to a servant in His Book and what is in the scrolls." I asked, "And what is in the scrolls?" He said, "Knowledge, the emancipation of prisoners, and that a Muslim should not be killed in place of a disbeliever." Abu Amr Muhammad ibn Abdullah Al-Adib narrated to us, Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili informed me, Abu Ya'la informed us, Harun ibn Ma'ruf informed us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Matarif who said, "I heard Ash-Sha'bi say, Abu Juhaifa informed me that I asked Ali, and he mentioned something similar to it."

قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ ؓ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ شَيْءٌ سِوَى الْقُرْآنِ؟ فَقَالَ لَا وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ إِلَّا أَنْ يُعْطِيَ اللهُ عَبْدًا فَهْمًا فِي كِتَابِهِ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قُلْتُ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ؟ قَالَ الْعَقْلُ وَفِكَاكُ الْأَسِيرِ وَلَا يُقْتَلُ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍ 15908 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَدِيبُ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو يَعْلَى ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الشَّعْبِيَّ يَقُولُ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ ؓ فَذَكَرَهُ بِمِثْلِهِ

" عن جحيفة قال: سألت عليّا هل عندكم من رسول الله ﷺ شئ بعد القرآن؟ فقال: لا والذى خلق الحبة وبرأ النسمة إلا فَهْمًا يؤتيه الله رجلًا في القرآن، أو

ما في هذه الصحيفة، قلت: وما في الصحيفة؟ قال: العقل أو فكاك الأسير، ولا يقتل مسلم بكافر ".
