So I went out and I informed him about the people who had gathered there. He (Ibn 'Abbas) said: Do you think they are forty? He (Kuraib) said: Yes. Ibn 'Abbas then said to them: Bring him (the dead body) out for I have heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: If any Muslim dies and forty men who associate nothing with Allah stand over his prayer (they offer prayer over him), Allah will accept them as intercessors for him.

[Machine] "Abu Abdurrahman said, and I heard it from Harun, he said: Ibn Wahb told us, Abu Sahr informed me, from Shareek ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Namir, from Kurayb, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, from Abdullah bin Abbas, that his son died in Qudayd or Usfan. So he said, 'O Kurayb, see how many people have gathered for him.' Kurayb said, 'I went out and found a group of people gathered for him, so I informed him.' He said, 'Did they say they are forty?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Take him out, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: There is no Muslim who dies and forty men stand for his funeral prayer, and they do not associate anything with Allah, except that Allah will grant them intercession for him.'"
