The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day in order to pray for rain. He turned his back towards people, supplicated before Allah, facing towards Qibla, and turned his mantle round and then observed two rak'ahs of prayer.  

مسلم:٨٩٤d – وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ وَحَرْمَلَةُ قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبَّادُ بْنُ تَمِيمٍ الْمَازِنِيُّ

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَمَّهُ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا يَسْتَسْقِي فَجَعَلَ إِلَى النَّاسِ ظَهْرَهُ يَدْعُو اللَّهَ وَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ وَحَوَّلَ رِدَاءَهُ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ

"Abbad bin Tamim told me that he heard his paternal uncle, who was one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day to pray for rain. He turned his back toward the people, praying to Allah (SWT), and he turned to face the Qiblah. He turned his rida' around, then he prayed two rak'ahs." (One of the narrators) Ibn Abi Dhi'b said in the hadith: "And he recited in them both."

One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to make supplication for rain. He turned his back towards the people praying to Allah, the Exalted. The narrator Sulaiman b. Dawud said: He faced the qiblah and turned around his cloak and then offered two rak'ahs of prayer. The narrator Ibn Abi Dhi'b said: He recited from the Qur'an in both of them. The version of Ibn al-Sarh adds: By it he means in a loud voice.  

أبو داود:١١٦٢ – حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ السَّرْحِ وَسُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ وَيُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبَّادُ بْنُ تَمِيمٍ الْمَازِنِيُّ

[Machine] He heard his uncle, who was one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to seek rain, then he faced the Qibla (direction of prayer) and turned his back to the people, supplicating and adjusting his garment. Then he performed two units of prayer." Abu 'Abdul-Rahman said: "The Prophet ﷺ folded his garment until the upper garment (or unstitched portion) came over the lower one, and he declared, ‘Until the new year begins, prices will become affordable.’"
