Make a recommendation for him, and you would get the reward. Allah, however, gives the verdict through the tongue of His Apostle what He likes most.  

مسلم:٢٦٢٧حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ وَحَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ عَنْ بُرَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى قَالَ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَتَاهُ طَالِبُ حَاجَةٍ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى جُلَسَائِهِ فَقَالَ اشْفَعُوا فَلْتُؤْجَرُوا وَلْيَقْضِ اللَّهُ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ مَا أَحَبَّ

Whenever a beggar or a person in need came to the Prophet, the Prophet would say "Help and recommend him and you will receive the reward for it, and Allah will bring about what he will through His Prophet's tongue

Whenever a beggar or a person in need of something came to the Prophet ﷺ , he used to say (to his companions), "Intercede (for him) and you will be rewarded for that, and Allah will fulfill what He will through His Apostle's tongue."

[Machine] "We were sitting with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , and a questioner asked him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Intercede and you will be rewarded, and let Allah decide on the tongue of His Prophet what He loves.'"  

أحمد:١٩٥٨٤حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا بُرَيْدُ بْنُ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ

كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَإِنَّهُ سَأَلَهُ سَائِلٌفَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اشْفَعُوا تُؤْجَرُوا وَلْيَقْضِ اللهُ ﷻ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ مَا أَحَبَّ

Make intercession to me, you will be rewarded, for Allah decrees what he wishes by the tongue of his prophet. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5131)
