[Machine] Omar ibn Al-Khattab saw a tailor selling a garment made of a fabric called "Deebaj." So he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I saw a tailor selling a garment made of Deebaj fabric. If you were to buy it, would you wear it for delegations, Eid, and Fridays?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Silk is only worn by those who have no share in the Hereafter." Omar later received a gift from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ - a silk ornamented garment. He gave one to Ali ibn Abi Talib, one to Osama bin Zaid, and sent one to Omar ibn Al-Khattab. He told Ali, "Tear it into pieces and distribute it among the women as veils." Omar then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I heard you say something about it [silk] and then you sent me a silk garment?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I did not send it to you for you to wear it, but rather for you to sell it. As for Osama, he wore it and went about in it." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Osama, he looked at him, and when Osama understood, he took off the garment and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you clothe me in it?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Tear it into pieces and distribute it among the women as veils, or do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said."  

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَأَى عُطَارِدًا يَبِيعُ حُلَّةً مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ عُطَارِدًا يَبِيعُ حُلَّةً مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ فَلَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهَا فَلَبِسْتَهَا لِلْوُفُودِ وَ لِلْعِيدِ وَلِلْجُمُعَةِ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ حَسِبْتُهُ قَالَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ قَالَ ثُمَّ أُهْدِيَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حُلَلٌ مِنْ سِيَرَاءَ حَرِيرٍ فَأَعْطَى عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ حلَّةً وَأَعْطَى أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ حُلَّةً وَبَعَثَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ بِحُلَّةٍ وَقَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ شَقِّقْهَا بَيْنَ النِّسَاءِ خُمُرًا وَجَاءَ عُمَرُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ سَمِعْتُكَ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيَّ بِحُلَّةٍ؟ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أُرْسِلْهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنْ لِتَبِيعَهَا فَأَمَّا أُسَامَةُ فَلَبِسَهَا فَرَاحَ فِيهَا فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا رَأَى أُسَامَةُ يُحَدَّدُإِلَيْهِ الطَّرْفَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا؟ قَالَ شَقِّقْهَا بَيْنَ النِّسَاءِ خُمُرًا أَوْ كَالَّذِي قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ  

[Machine] I heard Abdullah bin Umar saying, "Indeed, Umar bin Al-Khattab came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing a colorful cloak. He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if you were to buy this cloak and wear it when delegations visit you?' The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'This is only worn by those who have no manners.' Then, the Prophet ﷺ was given three sets of clothes. He sent one set to Umar, another to Ali, and the third to Usama bin Zaid. Umar came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing the clothes and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, did you send this to me?' The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'I sent it to you so that you may sell it or give it to your wife Khumur.' Ishaq narrated in his Hadith that Usama also came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing the clothes, and he said, 'I did not send it to you for you to wear it. I sent it to you so that you may sell it. I don't know if you will tear it or not.' Abdullah bin Harith also mentioned that he heard Salim bin Abdullah saying, 'I heard Abdullah bin Umar saying that Umar found the clothes, and he mentioned its meaning.'"  

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِحُلَّةِ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ تَلْبَسُهَا إِذَا قَدِمَ عَلَيْكَ وُفُودُ النَّاسِ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذَا مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِحُلَلٍ ثَلَاثٍ فَبَعَثَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بِحُلَّةٍ وَإِلَى عَلِيٍّ بِحُلَّةٍ وَإِلَى أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ بِحُلَّةٍ فَأَتَى عُمَرُ بِحُلَّتِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ بِهَذِهِ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ تُشَقِّقَهَا لِأَهْلِكَ خُمُرًا قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ وَأَتَاهُ أُسَامَةُ وَعَلَيْهِ الْحُلَّةُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَبْعَثْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا مَا أَدْرِي أَقَالَ لِأُسَامَةَ تُشَقِّقُهَا خُمُرًا أَمْ لَا قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ فِي حَدِيثِهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سَالِمَ بْنَعَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ وَجَدَ عُمَرُ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ  

Messenger of Allah I saw 'Utarid standing in the market with a silk garment; would that you buy and wear it for (receiving) the delegations of Arabs when they visit you? I (the narrator) said: I think he ('Umar) also said: You may wear it on Friday (also). Thereupon, Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) said: He who wears silk in this world has no share in the Hereafter. Later on when these silk garments were presented to Allah's Massenger ﷺ he presented one silk garment to 'Umar and presented one also to Usama b. Zaid and gave one to 'Ali b. Abu 'Talib. saying: Tear them and make head coverings for your ladies. 'Umar came carrying his garment and said: Messenger of Allah, you have sent it to me, whereas you had said yesterday about the (silk) garment of Utarid what you had to say. He (the Holy Prophet) said: I have not sent it to you that you wear it, but I have sent It to you so that you may derive benefit out of it; and Usama (donned) the garment (presented to him) and appeared to be brisk, whereupon Allah's Apostle ﷺ looked at him with a look by which he perceived that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not like what he had done. He said: Messenger of Allah. why is it that you look at me like this. whereas you yourself presented it to me? He said: I never sent it to you to wear it, but I sent It to you so that you may tear it and make out head covering for your ladies. (Using translation from Muslim 2068c)   

عُمَرُ ؓ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ عُطَارِدًا يُقِيمُ فِي السُّوقِ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ فَلَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهَا فَلَبِسْتَهَا لِوفُودِ الْعَرَبِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ قَالَ وَأَظُنُّهُ قَالَ وَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِحُلَلٍ سِيَرَاءَ فَبَعَثَ إِلَى عُمَرَ ؓ بِحُلَّةٍ وَبَعَثَ إِلَى أُسَامَةَ ؓ بِحُلَّةٍ وَأَعْطَى عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ حُلَّةً فَقَالَ لَهُ شَقِّقْهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ نِسَائِكَ فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ بِحُلَّتِهِ يَحْمِلُهَا فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ بِهَذِهِ وَقَدْ قُلْتَ بِالْأَمْسِ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَبْعَثْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَإِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتُصِيبَ بِهَا وَأَمَّا أُسَامَةُ فَرَاحَ فِي حُلَّتِهِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَظَرًا عَرَفَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ أَنْكَرَ مَا صَنَعَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا تَنْظُرُ إِلَيَّ وَأَنْتَ بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ بِهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أَبْعَثْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنْ بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتُشَقِّقَهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ نِسَائِكَ
