What has brought you out of your houses at this hour? They said: Messenger of Allah, it is hunger. Thereupon he said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, what has brought you out has brought me out too; get up. They got up along with him. and (all of them) came to the house of an Ansari, but he was not at home. When his wife saw him she said: Most welcome, and Messenger of Allah (may peace be Upon him) said to her: Where is so and so? She said: He has gone to get some fresh water for us. When the Ansari came and he saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his two Companions, he said: Praise be to Allah, no one has more honourable guests today than I (have). He then went out and brought them a bunch of ripe dates, dry dates and fresh dates, and said: Eat some of them. He then took hold of his long knife (for slaughtering a goat or a sheep). Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Beware of killing a milch animal. He slaughtered a sheep for them and after they had eaten of it and of the bunch and drank, and when they had taken their fill and had been fully satisfied with the drink, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr and Umar: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, you will certainly be questioned about this bounty on the Day of judgment. Hunger brought you out of your house, then you did not return until this bounty came to you.

"The Prophet ﷺ went out during an hour in which he would normally not go out, nor meet with anyone. Then Abu Bakr came to him. So he said:"What brought you O Abu Bakr?" He said: "I came to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and to look at his face, and to make sure he was safe. It was not long before 'Umar came. He said: "What has brought you O 'Umar ?" He said: "Hunger O Messenger of Allah!"He said: "I also experienced some of that" So they went to the home of Abu Al-Haitham At-Taiyyihan Al-Ansari. He was a man with many date-palms and sheep, but he had no servants so they did not find him there. They said to his wife: "Where is your companion?" She said: "He has gone to fetch us some good water." It was not long before Abu Al-Haitham came along hauling to a large water-skin which he put down. Then he came to hug the Prophet ﷺ and uttered that his father and mother should be ransomed for him. Then he went to grove of his and he spread out a mat for them. Then he went to a date-palm and returned with a cluster of dates which he put down. The prophet ﷺ said: "Why don't you select some ripe dates for us?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I wanted you to select from the ripe dates and the unripe dates." So they ate and they drank from that water. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! This is among the favors which you shall be asked about on the Day of Judgement. Cool shade, tasty ripe dates, and cool water." Abu Al-Haitham left to prepare some food for them. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not slaughter one with milk." So he Slaughtered a small female or male goat and brought it to them so they could eat it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do you have any servants?" He said: "No." So he said: "Then if we get some captives we shall bring them for you." So (later) the Prophet ﷺ came with 2 males, there was no third among them and he brought them to Abu Al-Haitham. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Choose from them." He said: "O Prophet of Allah! Choose for me." So the Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed the one consulted is entrusted. Take this one for I have seen him praying, and encourage him to do well." So Abu Al-Haitham went to his wife and informed her of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. So his wife said: "You will not fulfill what the Prophet ﷺ said until you have freed him." So he said: "He is free." So the Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed Allah has not send a Prophet nor made a Khalifah except that he has two groups of supporters, group ordering him to do good, and prohibiting him from evil and a group that never ceases spoiling his affairs. So whoever protected."

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Ṣaḥīḥ-Gharīb.

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out at a time when no one else goes out or meets him. Abu Bakr came to him and asked, "What made you come out, O Abu Bakr?" He said, "I went out to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , look at his face, and give him my greetings. It was not long before Umar came and said, 'What made you come out, O Umar?' He said, 'Hunger.' Umar said, 'And I found something that you can find.' So let us go to Abu al-Haytham ibn al-Tayhan al-Ansari, who had many horses and servants. They went to him, but could not find him. They found his wife and asked, 'Where is your husband?' She said, 'He went out in the early morning to fetch water from the canal of Banu Fulan. It was not long before he came back with a container, then he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and accompanied him, holding him by his father and mother, and they went to the shade of his garden. He spread a mat for them, then he went to a palm tree and brought some dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Why don't you shake them and bruise them?' He said, 'I wanted you to taste them fresh and juicy.' So they ate and drank from that water. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished, he said, 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, this is a blessing that you will be asked about on the Day of Resurrection. This is the cool shade and the refreshing fruit with the water upon it.' He then told them to set food for him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not slaughter what is pregnant.' So he slaughtered a young or old camel for them. Then he came to them and they ate.

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day and found Abu Bakr and Umar with him. He asked them, "What has brought you both out of your houses?" They replied, "Hunger." He said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, I was not brought out except by the same thing that brought you both out. Get up." So they got up with him. Then a man from the Ansar came, and it seemed like he had been with a woman. The Prophet ﷺ asked her, "Where is so-and-so?" She replied, "He went off to get water for us." While he was gone, the man from the Ansar came with some water. When he looked at the Prophet ﷺ and his companions, he said, "Allahu Akbar! No one among the people is more honorable than our guests." The Prophet ﷺ then took a skin bag and cut a piece out of it that contained some dates, fresh dates, and dried dates. He said to the man, "What if you had chosen?" The man replied, "You decide, O Messenger of Allah, according to your own opinion." The Prophet ﷺ took the bag and said to him, "Beware of the wolfberry." Then he slaughtered a sheep for them, and they ate. When they finished, the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "You will surely be asked about this blessing on the Day of Judgment. It was hunger that brought you out of your homes, and yet you did not return until you obtained this blessing."

nasai-kubra:6583Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. Shaqīq from his father > Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī > ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr > Abū Salamah > Abū Hurayrah

So whoever protected." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2369)
