Not paying back debts is wrongdoing

"A man came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was delivering a Khutbah from the Minbar, and he said: 'If I fight in the cause of Allah with patience and seeking reward, facing the enemy and not running away, do you think that Allah will forgive my sins?' He said: 'Yes.' Then he fell silent for a while. Then he said: 'Where is the one who was asking just now?' The man said: 'Here I am.' He said: 'What did you say?' He said: 'What did you say?' He said: 'I said: I said: If I fight in the cause of Allah with patience and seeking reward,facing the enemy and not running away, do you think that Allah will forgive my sins?' He said: 'Yes, except for debt. Jibril told me that just now.'"

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَقَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قَاتَلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ صَابِرًا مُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلاً غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ أَيُكَفِّرُ اللَّهُ عَنِّي سَيِّئَاتِي قَالَ نَعَمْ ثُمَّ سَكَتَ سَاعَةً قَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ آنِفًا فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ هَا أَنَا ذَا قَالَ مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ صَابِرًا مُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلاً غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ أَيُكَفِّرُ اللَّهُ عَنِّي سَيِّئَاتِي قَالَ نَعَمْ إِلاَّ الدَّيْنَ سَارَّنِي بِهِ جِبْرِيلُ آنِفًا

"O Messenger of Allah, if I am killed in the cause of Allah, will Allah forgive my sins?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Yes, if you are killed in the cause of Allah, and you are patient and seek reward, and you are facing the enemy, not running way - except for debt. Jibril (peace be upon him) told me that."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَامَ فِيهِمْ فَذَكَرَ لَهُمْ أَنَّ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالإِيمَانَ بِاللَّهِ أَفْضَلُ الأَعْمَالِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَيُكَفِّرُ اللَّهُ عَنِّي خَطَايَاىَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَعَمْ إِنْ قُتِلْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَأَنْتَ صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ إِلاَّ الدَّيْنَ فَإِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ قَالَ لِي ذَلِكَ

That he heard is father, narating a Hadith, which he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in which he stood among them, mentioning to them that Jihad in the cause of Allah and faith in Allah were the most virtuous of deeds. Then a man stood and said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I were killed in the cause of Allah, would my sins forgiven ?" So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Yes, If you are killed in Allah's cause, and you are patient, seeking the reward, advancing, not fleeing." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What was it that you said?" So he replied: "If I were killed in the cause of Allah, would my sins be removed (forgiven)?" So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Yes, If you are patient, seeking the reward, advancing, not fleeing - except debt. For Jibril said that to me."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَامَ فِيهِمْ فَذَكَرَ لَهُمْ أَنَّ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالإِيمَانَ بِاللَّهِ أَفْضَلُ الأَعْمَالِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَيُكَفِّرُ عَنِّي خَطَايَاىَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَعَمْ إِنْ قُتِلْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَأَنْتَ صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ قُلْتَ قُلْتُ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَيُكَفِّرُ عَنِّي خَطَايَاىَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَعَمْ وَأَنْتَ صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ إِلاَّ الدَّيْنَ فَإِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ قَالَ لِي ذَلِكَ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Said al- Maqburi from Abdullah ibn Abi Qatada that his father had said that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah! If I am killed in the way of Allah, expectant for reward, sincere, advancing, and not retreating, will Allah pardon my faults?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes." When the man turned away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him - or commanded him and he was called to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "What did you say?" He repeated his words to him, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Yes, except for the debt. Jibril said that to me."

أَنَّهُ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ صَابِرًا مُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلاً غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ أَيُكَفِّرُ اللَّهُ عَنِّي خَطَايَاىَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَعَمْ فَلَمَّا أَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ نَادَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَوْ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَنُودِيَ لَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ قُلْتَ فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ قَوْلَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ نَعَمْ إِلاَّ الدَّيْنَ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ لِي جِبْرِيلُ

[Machine] A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: "O Messenger of Allah, if I am killed in the way of Allah, patiently enduring, seeking Allah's reward, not retreating, will Allah forgive my sins?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "If you are killed in the way of Allah, patiently enduring, seeking Allah's reward, not retreating, Allah will indeed forgive your sins. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed as long as Allah willed, then the man asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, if I am killed in the way of Allah, not retreating, will Allah forgive my sins?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "If you are killed in the way of Allah, not retreating, Allah will forgive your sins except the debt." This is what Gabriel told me.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ صَابِرًا مُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلًا غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ كَفَّرَ اللهُ بِهِ خَطَايَايَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنْ قُتِلْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ صَابِرًا مُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلًا غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ كَفَّرَ اللهُ بِهِ خَطَايَاكَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَبِثَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ مُقْبِلًا غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ كَفَّرَ اللهُ عَنِّي خَطَايَايَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنْ قُتِلْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ مُقْبِلًا غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ كَفَّرَ اللهُ عَنْكَ خَطَايَاكَ إِلَّا الدَّيْنَ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ لِي جِبْرِيلُ

Messenger of Allah, do you think that if I am killed in the way of Allah, my sins will be blotted out from me? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Yes, in case you are killed in the way of Allah and you were patient and sincere and you always fought facing the enemy, never turming your back upon him. Then he added: What have you said (now)? (Wishing to have further assurance from him for his satisfaction), he asked (again): Do you think if I am killed in the way of Allah, all my sins will be obliterated from me? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Yes, it you were patient and sincere and always fought facing the enemy and never turning your back upon him, (all your lapses would be forgiven) except debt. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "If you are killed in the way of Allah, patiently expecting reward, seeking His pleasure, not retreating or turning away, Allah will forgive your sins." Then the man repeated his question, "O Messenger of Allah, if I am killed in the way of Allah, will Allah forgive my sins?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "If you are killed in the way of Allah, patiently expecting reward, seeking His pleasure, not retreating or turning away, Allah will forgive your sins except for the debt." This is what Jibril (Angel Gabriel) informed me.

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ صَابِرًا مُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلًا غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ كَفَّرَ اللهُ بِهِ خَطَايَايَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنْ قُتِلْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ صَابِرًامُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلًا غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ كَفَّرَ اللهُ بِهِ خَطَايَاكَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَبِثَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ كَفَّرَ اللهُ بِهِ خَطَايَايَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنْ قُتِلْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ صَابِرًا مُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلًا غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ كَفَّرَ اللهُ بِهِ خَطَايَاكَ إِلَّا الدَّيْنَ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ لِي جِبْرِيلُ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَامَ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَذَكَرَ أَنَّ الْإِيمَانَ بِاللهِ وَالْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ الْأَعْمَالِ عِنْدَ اللهِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَأَنَا صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ يُكَفِّرُ اللهُ عَنِّي خَطَايَايَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَكَيْفَ قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَأَنَا صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ يُكَفِّرُ اللهُ عَنِّي خَطَايَايَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ كَيْفَ قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَأَنَا صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ يُكَفِّرُ اللهُ عَنِّي خَطَايَايَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ إِلَّا الدَّيْنَ فَإِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ سَارَّنِي بِذَلِكَ
