Expiation for striking or slapping a slave

muslim:1657b – Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná > Ibn Bashshār > Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Firās > Dhakwān > Zādhān

Ibn Umar called for a slave boy of his and saw a mark on his back. He said to him, "Did I hurt you?" He said, "No." He said, "Then you are free." Then he picked up something from the ground and said, "I do not have any reward for it weighing as much as this. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Whoever strikes a slave boy of his for an offense he did not commit, or slaps him, then his expiation is to set him free.""

مسلم:١٦٥٧ب – وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ الْمُثَنَّى قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ فِرَاسٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ذَكْوَانَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ زَاذَانَ

أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ دَعَا بِغُلاَمٍ لَهُ، فَرَأَى بِظَهْرِهِ أَثَرًا، فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَوْجَعْتُكَ؟ قَالَ: لاَ. قَالَ: فَأَنْتَ عَتِيقٌ. قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَخَذَ شَيْئًا مِنَ الأَرْضِ فَقَالَ: مَا لِي فِيهِ مِنَ الأَجْرِ مَا يَزِنُ هَذَا، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «مَنْ ضَرَبَ غُلاَمًا لَهُ حَدًّا لَمْ يَأْتِهِ أَوْ لَطَمَهُ فَإِنَّ كَفَّارَتَهُ أَنْ يُعْتِقَهُ».

I came to Ibn 'Umar as he had granted freedom to a stave. He (the narrator further) said: He took hold of a wood or something like it from the earth and said: It (freedom of a slave) has not the reward evert equal to it, but the fact that I heard Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) say: He who slaps his slave or beats him, the expiation for it is that he should set him free.

مسلم:١٦٥٧أ – حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو كَامِلٍ فُضَيْلُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ فِرَاسٍ عَنْ ذَكْوَانَ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ زَاذَانَ أَبِي عُمَرَ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ وَقَدْ أَعْتَقَ مَمْلُوكًا قَالَ

فَأَخَذَ مِنَ الأَرْضِ عُودًا أَوْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ مَا فِيهِ مِنَ الأَجْرِ مَا يَسْوَى هَذَا إِلاَّ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنْ لَطَمَ مَمْلُوكَهُ أَوْ ضَرَبَهُ فَكَفَّارَتُهُ أَنْ يُعْتِقَهُ

abudawud:5168 – Musaddad And ʾAbū Kāmil > Abū ʿAwānah > Firās > Abū Ṣāliḥ Dhakwān > Zādhān > Atayt Ibn ʿUmar Waqad Aʿtaq Mamlūk Lah Faʾakhadh from al-Arḍ ʿŪd or Shayʾ > Mā Lī Fīh from al-Ajr Mā Yaswá Hadhā

I came to Ibn ‘Umar when he set his slave free. He took a stick or something else from the earth and said; for me there is no reward even equivalent to this. I heard the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) say: If anyone slaps or beats his slave the atonement due from him is to set him free.

أبو داود:٥١٦٨ – حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ وَأَبُو كَامِلٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ فِرَاسٍ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ذَكْوَانَ عَنْ زَاذَانَ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ وَقَدْ أَعْتَقَ مَمْلُوكًا لَهُ فَأَخَذَ مِنَ الأَرْضِ عُودًا أَوْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ

مَا لِي فِيهِ مِنَ الأَجْرِ مَا يَسْوَى هَذَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنْ لَطَمَ مَمْلُوكَهُ أَوْ ضَرَبَهُ فَكَفَّارَتُهُ أَنْ يُعْتِقَهُ

مَا لِي مِنْ أَجْرِهِ وَتَنَاوَلَ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْأَرْضِ مَا يَزِنُ هَذِهِ أَوْ مِثْلَ هَذِهِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺيَقُولُ مَنْ لَطَمَ غُلَامَهُ أَوْ ضَرَبَهُ فَكَفَّارَتُهُ عِتْقُهُ

ahmad:5267 – ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Sufyān > Firās > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Zādhān

[AI] What reward do I have in this? Neither this nor that is of any value. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever strikes his servant, and the servant did not deserve it, or he oppressed him, or slapped him, let him seek the forgiveness of Allah, for his expiation is to set him free."

أحمد:٥٢٦٧ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ فِرَاسٍ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو صَالِحٍ عَنْ زَاذَانَ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَدَعَا غُلَامًا لَهُ فَأَعْتَقَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ ضَرَبَ عَبْدَهُ حَدًّا لَمْ يَأْتِهِ فَكَفَّارَتُهُ عِتْقُهُ»
