٥۔ كتاب الْمَسَاجِدِ وَمَوَاضِعِ الصَّلاَةِ

5.14 The prohibition of spitting in the masjid, during prayer and at other times. The prohibition of a praying person spitting in front of him or to his right

٥۔١٤ باب النَّهْىِ عَنِ الْبُصَاقِ، فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَغَيْرِهَا

(319) bukhari:406ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Nāfiʿ > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw sputum on the wall of the mosque in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off. He faced the people and said, "Whenever any one of you is praying, he should not spit in front of him because in the prayer Allah is in front of him."  

(٣١٩) البخاري:٤٠٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَأَى بُصَاقًا فِي جِدَارِ الْقِبْلَةِ فَحَكَّهُ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَ أَحَدُكُمْ يُصَلِّي فَلاَ يَبْصُقْ قِبَلَ وَجْهِهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ قِبَلَ وَجْهِهِ إِذَا صَلَّى  

(320) bukhari:414ʿAlī > Sufyān > al-Zuhrī > Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Abū Saʿīd

The Prophet ﷺ saw sputum on (the wall of) the mosque in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off with gravel. Then he forbade Spitting in front or on the right, but allowed it on one's left or under one's left foot.  

(٣٢٠) البخاري:٤١٤حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيٌّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنَا الزُّهْرِيُّ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَبْصَرَ نُخَامَةً فِي قِبْلَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَحَكَّهَا بِحَصَاةٍ ثُمَّ نَهَى أَنْ يَبْزُقَ الرَّجُلُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ أَوْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلَكِنْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ أَوْ تَحْتَ قَدَمِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَعَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ سَمِعَ حُمَيْدًا عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ نَحْوَهُ  

(321) bukhari:408Mūsá b. Ismāʿīl > Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd > Ibn Shihāb > Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Abū Hurayrah And ʾAbā Saʿīd Ḥaddathāh

Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw some expectoration on the wall of the mosque; he took gravel and scraped it off and said, "If anyone of you wanted to spit he should neither spit in front of him nor on his right but he could spit either on his left or under his left foot."  

(٣٢١) البخاري:٤٠٨حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ وَأَبَا سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَاهُ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَأَى نُخَامَةً فِي جِدَارِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَتَنَاوَلَ حَصَاةً فَحَكَّهَا فَقَالَ إِذَا تَنَخَّمَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلاَ يَتَنَخَّمَنَّ قِبَلَ وَجْهِهِ وَلاَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَبْصُقْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ أَوْ تَحْتَ قَدَمِهِ الْيُسْرَى  

(322) bukhari:407ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Hishām b. ʿUrwah from his father > ʿĀʾishah

(the mother of faithful believers) Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw some nasal secretions, expectoration or sputum on the wall of the mosque in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off.  

(٣٢٢) البخاري:٤٠٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَأَى فِي جِدَارِ الْقِبْلَةِ مُخَاطًا أَوْ بُصَاقًا أَوْ نُخَامَةً فَحَكَّهُ  

(323) bukhari:413Ādam > Shuʿbah > Qatādah > Anas b. Mālik

The Prophet ﷺ said, "A faithful believer while in prayer is speaking in private to his Lord, so he should neither spit in front of him nor to his right side but he could spit either on his left or under his foot."  

(٣٢٣) البخاري:٤١٣حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ إِذَا كَانَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَإِنَّمَا يُنَاجِي رَبَّهُ فَلاَ يَبْزُقَنَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَلاَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلَكِنْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ أَوْ تَحْتَ قَدَمِهِ  

(324) bukhari:415Ādam > Shuʿbah > Qatādah > Anas b. Mālik

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Spitting in the mosque is a sin and its expiation is to bury it."  

(٣٢٤) البخاري:٤١٥حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْبُزَاقُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ خَطِيئَةٌ وَكَفَّارَتُهَا دَفْنُهَا  

(325) bukhari:386Ādam b. Abū Iyās > Shuʿbah > Abū Maslamah Saʿīd b. Yazīd al-Azdī

Saʿid bin Yazid Al-Azdi: I asked Anas bin Malik whether the Prophet ﷺ had ever, prayed with his shoes on. He replied "Yes."  

(٣٢٥) البخاري:٣٨٦حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مَسْلَمَةَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الأَزْدِيُّ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ أَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فِي نَعْلَيْهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ  

(326) bukhari:752Qutaybah > Sufyān > al-Zuhrī > ʿUrwah > ʿĀʾishah

Once the Prophet ﷺ prayed on a Khamisa with marks on it and said, "The marks on it diverted my attention, take this Khamisa to Abu Jahm and bring an Inbijaniya (from him.)"  

(٣٢٦) البخاري:٧٥٢حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ صَلَّى فِي خَمِيصَةٍ لَهَا أَعْلاَمٌ فَقَالَ شَغَلَتْنِي أَعْلاَمُ هَذِهِ اذْهَبُوا بِهَا إِلَى أَبِي جَهْمٍ وَأْتُونِي بِأَنْبِجَانِيَّةٍ  

(327) bukhari:5463Muʿallá b. Asad > Wuhayb > Ayyūb > Abū Qilābah > Anas b. Mālik

The Prophet ﷺ said, If supper is served and the Iqama for (Isha) prayer is proclaimed, start with you supper first."  

(٣٢٧) البخاري:٥٤٦٣حَدَّثَنَا مُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا وُضِعَ الْعَشَاءُ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَابْدَءُوا بِالْعَشَاءِ  

(328) bukhari:672Yaḥyá b. Bukayr > al-Layth > ʿUqayl > Ibn Shihāb > Anas b. Mālik

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If the supper is served start having it before praying the Maghrib prayer and do not be hasty in finishing it."  

(٣٢٨) البخاري:٦٧٢حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا قُدِّمَ الْعَشَاءُ فَابْدَءُوا بِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُصَلُّوا صَلاَةَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَلاَ تَعْجَلُوا عَنْ عَشَائِكُمْ  

(329) bukhari:671Musaddad > Yaḥyá > Hishām from my father > ʿĀʾishah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "If supper is served, and Iqama is pronounced one should start with the supper."  

(٣٢٩) البخاري:٦٧١حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ هِشَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِذَا وُضِعَ الْعَشَاءُ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَابْدَءُوا بِالْعَشَاءِ  

(330) bukhari:673ʿUbayd b. Ismāʿīl > Abū Usāmah > ʿUbaydullāh > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If the supper is served for anyone of you and the Iqāmah is pronounced, start with the supper and don't be in haste (and carry on eating) till you finish it."

If food was served for Ibn ʿUmar and Iqama was pronounced, he never came to the prayer till he finished it (i.e. food) in spite of the fact that he heard the recitation (of the Qur'an) by the Imam (in the prayer).  

(٣٣٠) البخاري:٦٧٣حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «إِذَا وُضِعَ عَشَاءُ أَحَدِكُمْ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَابْدَءُوا بِالْعَشَاءِ وَلاَ يَعْجَلْ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ مِنْهُ۔»

وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يُوضَعُ لَهُ الطَّعَامُ وَتُقَامُ الصَّلاَةُ فَلاَ يَأْتِيهَا حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ وَإِنَّهُ لَيَسْمَعُ قِرَاءَةَ الإِمَامِ
