4. The Book of Prayers (2/2)
(My mother) Umu-l-Fadl heard me reciting "Wal Mursalati ʿUrfan" (77) and said, "O my son! By Allah, your recitation made me remember that it was the last Sura I heard from Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He recited it in the Maghrib prayer. "
My father said, "I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ reciting "at-Tur" (52) in the Maghrib prayer."
4.36 Recitation During 'Isha
The Prophet ﷺ was on a journey and recited in one of the first two rakʿat of the ʿIsha' prayer "Wa t-teeni wa z-zaitun." (95)
Muʿadh bin Jabal used to pray with the Prophet ﷺ and then go to lead his people in prayer. Once he led the people in prayer and recited Surat-al-Baqara. A man left (the row of the praying people) and offered (light) prayer (separately) and went away. When Muʿadh came to know about it, he said. "He (that man) is a hypocrite." Later that man heard what Muʿadh said about him, so he came to the Prophet and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We are people who work with our own hands and irrigate (our farms) with our camels. Last night Muʿadh led us in the (night) prayer and he recited Sura-al-Baqara, so I offered my prayer separately, and because of that, he accused me of being a hypocrite." The Prophet called Muʿadh and said thrice, "O Muʿadh! You are putting the people to trials? Recite 'Washshamsi wad-uhaha' (91) or'Sabbih isma Rabbi ka-l-A'la' (87) or the like."
4.37 The Command To The Imam To Make The Prayer Brief But Complete
A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Allah, I fail to attend the morning congregational prayer because so-and-so (i.e., Muʿadh bin Jabal) prolongs the prayer when he leads us for it." I had never seen the Prophet ﷺ more furious in giving advice than he was on that day. He then said, "O people! some of you make others dislike (good deeds, i.e. prayers etc). So whoever among you leads the people in prayer, he should shorten it because among them there are the old, the weak and the busy (needy having some jobs to do). (See Hadith No. 90, Vol. 1)
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If anyone of you leads the people in the prayer, he should shorten it for amongst them are the weak, the sick and the old; and if anyone among your prays alone then he may prolong (the prayer) as much as he wishes. "
The Prophet ﷺ used to pray a short prayer (in congregation) but used to offer it in a perfect manner.
I never prayed behind any Imam a prayer lighter and more perfect than that behind the Prophet ﷺ and he used to cut short the prayer whenever he heard the cries of a child lest he should put the child's mother to trial.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "When I start the prayer I intend to prolong it, but on hearing the cries of a child, I cut short the prayer because I know that the cries of the child will incite its mother's passions."
4.38 Moderation In All Pillars Of The Prayer, And Making It Brief Yet Complete
The bowing, the prostration the sitting in between the two prostrations and the standing after the bowing of the Prophet ﷺ but not qiyam (standing in the prayer) and quʿud (sitting in the prayer) used to be approximately equal (in duration).
Anas said, "I will leave no stone unturned in making you offer the prayer as I have seen the Prophet ﷺ making us offer it." Anas used to do a thing which I have not seen you doing. He used to stand after the bowing for such a long time that one would think that he had forgotten (the prostrations) and he used to sit in-between the prostrations so long that one would think that he had forgotten the second prostration.
4.39 Following The Imam And Acting After Him
(He was not a liar) We used to pray behind the Prophet ﷺ and when he said, "Samiʿa l-lahu liman hamidah", none of us would bend his back (to go for prostration) till the Prophet ﷺ had placed his, forehead on the ground.
4.42 What Is To Be Said While Bowing And Prostrating
The Prophet ﷺ used to say frequently in his bowing and prostrations "Subhanaka l-lahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahumma ghfir li" (Exalted [from unbecoming attributes] Are you O Allah our Lord, and by Your praise [do I exalt you]. O Allah! Forgive me). In this way [??] he was acting on what was explained to him in the Holy Qur'an.
4.44 The Limbs Of Prostration And The Prohibition Of Tucking Up One's Hair And Garment Or Having Ones Hair In A Braid When Praying
The Prophet ﷺ was ordered (by Allah) to prostrate on seven parts and not to tuck up the clothes or hair (while praying). Those parts are: the forehead (along with the tip of nose), both hands, both knees, and (toes of) both feet.
4.46 The Description Of The Prayer, With What It Begins And Ends. The Description Of Bowing And Moderation Therein, And Of Prostration And Moderation Therein. Tashah-hud After Each Two Rak'ah Of Four Rak'ah Prayers. Description Ol Sitting Between The Two Prostrations, And In The First Tashah-hud
Ibn Buhaina, "When the Prophet ﷺ prayed, he used to separate his arms from his body so widely that the whiteness of his armpits was visible."
4.47 The Sutrah (Screen) For One Who Is Praying, And The Recommendation To Pray Facing A Sutrah. The Ruling On Passing In Front Of One Who Is Praying, And Preventing One Who Wants To Pass In Front. It Is Permissible To Lie Down In Front Of One Who Is Praying, Praying Towards One's Mount. The Command To Stand Close To The Sutrah. The Height Of The Suirah, And Related Matters
Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out on ʿId day, he used to order that a Harba [??] (a short spear) to be planted in front of him (as a Sutra for his prayer) and then he used to pray facing it with the people behind him and used to do the same while on a journey. After the Prophet ﷺ , this practice was adopted by the Muslim rulers (who followed his traditions).
"The Prophet ﷺ used to make his she-camel sit across and he would pray facing it (as a Sutra)." I asked, "What would the Prophet ﷺ do if the she-camel was provoked and moved?" He said, "He would take its camel-saddle and put it in front of him and pray facing its back part (as a Sutra). And Ibn ʿUmar used to do the same." (This indicates that one should not pray except behind a Sutra).
My father said, "I saw Bilal turning his face from side to side while pronouncing the Adhan for the prayer."
I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a red leather tent and I saw Bilal taking the remaining water with which the Prophet had performed ablution. I saw the people taking the utilized water impatiently and whoever got some of it rubbed it on his body and those who could not get any took the moisture from the others' hands. Then I saw Bilal carrying a short spear (or stick) which he planted in the ground. The Prophet came out tucking up his red cloak, and led the people in prayer and offered two rakʿat (facing the Kaʿba) taking a short spear (or stick) as a Sutra for his prayer. I saw the people and animals passing in front of him beyond the stick.
Once I came riding a she-ass and had (just) attained the age of puberty. Messenger of Allah ﷺ was offering the prayer at Mina. There was no wall in front of him and I passed in front of some of the row while they were offering their prayers. There I let the she-ass loose to graze and entered the row, and nobody objected to it.
4.48 Preventing One Who Wants To Pass In Front Of A Praying Person
The Prophet ﷺ said, (what is ascribed to him in the following Hadith): Narrated Abu Salih As-Samman: I saw Abu Saʿid Al-Khudri praying on a Friday, behind something which acted as a Sutra. A young man from Bani Abi Mu'ait [??] , wanted to pass in front of him, but Abu Saʿid repulsed him with a push on his chest. Finding no alternative he again tried to pass but Abu Saʿid pushed him with a greater force. The young man abused Abu Saʿid and went to Marwan and lodged a complaint against Abu Saʿid and Abu Saʿid followed the young man to Marwan who asked him, "O Abu Saʿid! What has happened between you and the son of your brother?" Abu Saʿid said to him, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'If anybody amongst you is praying behind something as a Sutra and somebody tries to pass in front of him, then he should repulse him and if he refuses, he should use force against him for he is a Shaitan (a Satan).' "
that Zaid bin Khalid sent him to Abi Juhaim to ask him what he had heard from Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a person passing in front of another person who was praying. Abu Juhaim replied, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If the person who passes in front of another person in prayer knew the magnitude of his sin he would prefer to wait for 40 (days, months or years) rather than to pass in front of him." Abu An-Nadr said, "I do not remember exactly whether he said 40 days, months or years."
4.49 The Praying Person Standing Close To The Sutrah
The distance between the Musalla of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the wall was just sufficient for a sheep to pass through .
The distance between the wall of the mosque and the pulpit was hardly enough for a sheep to pass through.
I used to accompany Salama bin Al-Akwaʿ and he used to pray behind the pillar which was near the place where the Qur'ans were kept. I said, "O Abu Muslim! I see you always seeking to pray behind this pillar." He replied, "I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ always seeking to pray near that pillar."
4.51 Lying In Front Of One Who Is Praying
Allah Apostle prayed while I was lying like a dead body on his family bed between him and his Qibla.
The Prophet ﷺ used to pray while I was sleeping across in his bed in front of him. Whenever he wanted to pray witr, he would wake me up and I would pray witr.
The things which annul prayer were mentioned before me (and those were): a dog, a donkey and a woman. I said, "You have compared us (women) to donkeys and dogs. By Allah! I saw the Prophet ﷺ praying while I used to lie in (my) bed between him and the Qibla. Whenever I was in need of something, I disliked to sit and trouble the Prophet. So, I would slip away by the side of his feet."
Do you make us (women) equal to dogs and donkeys? While I used to lie in my bed, the Prophet ﷺ would come and pray facing the middle of the bed. I used to consider it not good to stand in front of him in his prayers. So I used to slip away slowly and quietly from the foot of the bed till I got out of my guilt.
