Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore a gold ring or a silver ring and placed its stone towards the palm of his hand and had the name 'Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah' engraved on it. The people also started wearing gold rings like it, but when the Prophet ﷺ saw them wearing such rings, he threw away his own ring and said. "I will never wear it," and then wore a silver ring, whereupon the people too started wearing silver rings. Ibn ʿUmar added: After the Prophet ﷺ Abu Bakr wore the ring, and then ʿUmar and then ʿUthman wore it till it fell in the Aris well from ʿUthman.  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَوْ فِضَّةٍ وَجَعَلَ فَصَّهُ مِمَّا يَلِي كَفَّهُ وَنَقَشَ فِيهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ مِثْلَهُ فَلَمَّا رَآهُمْ قَدِ اتَّخَذُوهَا رَمَى بِهِ وَقَالَ لاَ أَلْبَسُهُ أَبَدًا ثُمَّ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَ الْفِضَّةِ قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ فَلَبِسَ الْخَاتَمَ بَعْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ عُثْمَانُ حَتَّى وَقَعَ مِنْ عُثْمَانَ فِي بِئْرِ أَرِيسَ  

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] put on a ring of gold and he used to wear its stone (Fass) next to his palm. Then the people started to wear rings too. Then the Messenger of Allah [SAW] threw it away and said: "I will never wear it again." Then the Messenger of Allah [SAW] took a ring of silver, and wore it on his hand. Then it was on the hand of Abu Bakr, then on the hand of 'Umar, then on the hand of 'Uthman, until it was lost in the well of Aris.  

اتَّخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَجَعَلَ فَصَّهُ مِمَّا يَلِي بَطْنَ كَفِّهِ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ الْخَوَاتِيمَ فَأَلْقَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لاَ أَلْبَسُهُ أَبَدًا ثُمَّ اتَّخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَاتَمًا مِنْ وَرِقٍ فَأَدْخَلَهُ فِي يَدِهِ ثُمَّ كَانَ فِي يَدِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ كَانَ فِي يَدِ عُمَرَ ثُمَّ كَانَ فِي يَدِ عُثْمَانَ حَتَّى هَلَكَ فِي بِئْرِ أَرِيسٍ  

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] put on a ring of gold, and he used to wear its stone (Fass) next to his palm. Then the people started to wear rings of gold. Then the Messenger of Allah [SAW] discarded it, and the people discarded their rings. Then he acquired a ring of silver with which he used to seal letters, but he did not wear it. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَكَانَ يَجْعَلُ فَصَّهُ فِي بَاطِنِ كَفِّهِ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَطَرَحَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَطَرَحَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَهُمْ ثُمَّ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَكَانَ يَخْتِمُ بِهِ وَلَا يَلْبَسُهُ «  

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] put on a ring of gold and he used to wear its stone (Fass) next to his palm. Then the people started to wear rings too. [Machine] Allah's Messenger ﷺ had a gold ring that he would wear, and he would place its gemstone facing towards his palm. People started imitating him and wearing rings as well. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw away the ring and started wearing a ring made of silver, which he had in his hand. Then it was passed to Abu Bakr, then to Umar, and then to Uthman, until it was lost in the well of Aris.  

اللهِ ﷺ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَكَانَ يَجْعَلُ فَصَّهُ مِمَّا يَلِي كَفَّهُ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ الْخَوَاتِيمَ فَأَلْقَاهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ وَاتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ وَرِقٍ فَكَانَ فِي يَدِهِ ثُمَّ فِي يَدِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ فِي يَدِ عُمَرَ ثُمَّ فِي يَدِ عُثْمَانَ ؓ حَتَّى هَلَكَ فِي بِئْرِ أُرَيْسٍ
