Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore a gold ring or a silver ring and placed its stone towards the palm of his hand and had the name 'Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah' engraved on it. The people also started wearing gold rings like it, but when the Prophet ﷺ saw them wearing such rings, he threw away his own ring and said. "I will never wear it," and then wore a silver ring, whereupon the people too started wearing silver rings. Ibn ʿUmar added: After the Prophet ﷺ Abu Bakr wore the ring, and then ʿUmar and then ʿUthman wore it till it fell in the Aris well from ʿUthman.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَوْ فِضَّةٍ وَجَعَلَ فَصَّهُ مِمَّا يَلِي كَفَّهُ وَنَقَشَ فِيهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ مِثْلَهُ فَلَمَّا رَآهُمْ قَدِ اتَّخَذُوهَا رَمَى بِهِ وَقَالَ لاَ أَلْبَسُهُ أَبَدًا ثُمَّ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَ الْفِضَّةِ قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ فَلَبِسَ الْخَاتَمَ بَعْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ عُثْمَانُ حَتَّى وَقَعَ مِنْ عُثْمَانَ فِي بِئْرِ أَرِيسَ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a signet-ring of gold, and put the stone next the palm of his hand. He engraved on it "Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah". The people then took signet-rings of gold. When he saw that they had taken them (like his ring) he threw it away and said: I shall never wear it. He then fashioned a silver ring and engraved on it "Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah". Then Abu Bakr wore it after him, then 'Umar wore it after Abu Bakr, and the 'Uthman wore it after 'Umar till it fell down in a well called Aris. Abu Dawud said: The people did not disagree on 'Uthman till the signet-rin fell down from his hand.

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ had a gold ring, and he used to wear it on the inside of his hand. One day, he threw it away, and the people also threw away their rings. Then he took a silver ring and started wearing it, and he never took it off.

كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَكَانَيَجْعَلُ فَصَّهُ فِي بَاطِنِ يَدِهِ قَالَ فَطَرَحَهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَطَرَحَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَهُمْ ثُمَّ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَكَانَ يَخْتِمُ بِهِ وَلَا يَلْبَسُهُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ had a gold ring that he used to wear, he would put its gemstone inside his palm. One day he threw it away, and his companions threw away their rings as well. Then he took a ring made of silver and he used to use it as a seal but not wear it.

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a gold ring, and so the people took gold rings. Then one day he stood up and said, "I used to wear this ring, but I have now discarded it." So the people discarded their rings.

اتَّخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَقَامَ يَوْمًا فَقَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَلْبَسُ هَذَا الْخَاتَمَ ثُمَّ نَبَذَهُ فَنَبَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَهُمْ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ had a ring of gold, and he used to place its gem on the inner side of his hand. One day, he accidentally dropped it and the people also dropped their rings. Then, he chose a ring made of silver, and he used to seal with it without wearing it.

[AI] Allah's Messenger ﷺ had a gold ring that he would wear, and he would place its gemstone facing towards his palm. People started imitating him and wearing rings as well. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw away the ring and started wearing a ring made of silver, which he had in his hand. Then it was passed to Abu Bakr, then to Umar, and then to Uthman, until it was lost in the well of Aris.
