ذِكْرُ الزَّجْرِ عَنْ أَنْ تُسْبِلَ الْمَرْأَةُ إِزَارَهَا أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذِرَاعٍ

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned lower garment, Umm Salamah, wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, asked him: And a woman, Messenger of Allah? He replied: She may hang down a span. Umm Salamah said: Still it (foot) will be uncovered. He said: Then a forearm's length, nor exceeding it.

أَنَّ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ ذَكَرَ الإِزَارَ فَالْمَرْأَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ تُرْخِي شِبْرًا قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفُ عَنْهَا قَالَ فَذِرَاعًا لاَ تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ

She mentioned women's hems to the Messenger of Allah [SAW], and the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "Let it down a hand span." Umm Salamah said: "But that will uncover (her feet)." He said: "Let it down a forearm's length, but no more than that."

أَنَّهَا ذَكَرَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذُيُولَ النِّسَاءِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُرْخِينَ شِبْرًا قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفَ عَنْهَا قَالَ تُرْخِي ذِرَاعًا لاَ تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ

When the Prophet [SAW] said what he said about the Izar, Umm Salamah said: "What about women?" He said: "Let it down a hand span." She said: "But then their feet will show." He said: "Then (let it down) a forearm's length, but no more than that."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لَمَّا ذَكَرَ فِي الإِزَارِ مَا ذَكَرَ قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ فَكَيْفَ بِالنِّسَاءِ قَالَ يُرْخِينَ شِبْرًا قَالَتْ إِذًا تَبْدُوَ أَقْدَامُهُنَّ قَالَ فَذِرَاعًا لاَ يَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ

"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] was asked how much a woman should let her hem drag. He said: 'A hand span.' She said: 'But then it will uncover her (feet).' He said: 'A forearm's length, and no more than that.'"

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَمْ تَجُرُّ الْمَرْأَةُ مِنْ ذَيْلِهَا قَالَ شِبْرًا قَالَتْ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفَ عَنْهَا قَالَ ذِرَاعٌ لاَ تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَا

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about how long a woman’s hem should hang down. He said: ‘A hand span.’ I said: ‘But then (her legs and feet) will be uncovered.’ He said: ‘Then a forearm’s length, but no more than that.’”

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَمْ تَجُرُّ الْمَرْأَةُ مِنْ ذَيْلِهَا قَالَ شِبْرًا قُلْتُ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفَ عَنْهَا قَالَ ذِرَاعٌ لاَ تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ

[AI] About Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , she said that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about the length of a woman's dress. He replied, "It should be a hand-span." So, I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, then will their feet be exposed?" He said, "No, it should hang below that." Abdullah Al-Nas said that people said this hadith was narrated by Nafi' from Sulaiman bin Yasar.

عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ ذَيْلِ الْمَرْأَةِ فَقَالَ «شِبْرًا» فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِذَنْ تَبْدُوَ أَقْدَامُهُنَّ؟ قَالَ «قَدْرَ ذِرَاعٍ لَا يَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ» قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ النَّاسُ يَقُولُونَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ

[AI] From Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , she said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The feet of women should not exceed the length of a forearm.' I asked, 'So, the lower part of their legs should be visible, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied, 'No, they should be covered up to the ankle.'"

عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذُيُولُ النِّسَاءِ شِبْرٌ قُلْتُ إِذَنْ تَبْدُوَ أَقْدَامُهُنَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ فَذِرَاعٌ لَا تَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ

[AI] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the footsteps of women. He said, "A cubit." So I said, "Then their feet will be showing, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "An arm's length, and do not exceed it."

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ ذُيُولِ النِّسَاءِ؟ فَقَالَ شِبْرًا فَقُلْتُ إِذَنْ تَخْرُجَ أَقْدَامُهُنَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَذِرَاعٌ لَا تَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what about women?" He said, "They should shorten their garment by a handspan." I said, "So their ankles would be exposed, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "A forearm's length, and they should not increase it."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ بِالنِّسَاءِ؟ قَالَ يُرْخِينَ شِبْرًا قُلْتُ إِذَنْ يَنْكَشِفَ عَنْهُنَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَذِرَاعٌ لَا يَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu Bakr ibn Nafi from his father Nafi, the mawla of Ibn Umar that Safiyya bint Abi Ubayd informed him that Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ said that when the lower garment of women was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah, he said, "She lets it down a handspan." Umm Salama said, "If it leaves her uncovered?" He said, "Then the length of a forearm and let her not increase it."

عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ حِينَ ذُكِرَ الإِزَارُ فَالْمَرْأَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ تُرْخِيهِ شِبْرًا قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفُ عَنْهَا قَالَ فَذِرَاعًا لاَ تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ

[AI] "She mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ the beauty of certain women, so he said, 'They will be raised up a handspan.' I said, 'Then their forearms will be exposed?' He said, 'A cubit that they do not exceed.'"

أَنَّهَا ذَكَرَتْ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ ذُيُولَ النِّسَاءِ فَقَالَ «تُرْخِينَ شِبْرًا» قُلْتُ إِذَنْ تَنْكَشِفُ عَنْهُنَّ قَالَ «فَذِرَاعٌ لَا يَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ»

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what about women?" He said, "They should cover a forearm’s length." I said, "So, their forearms will be exposed?" He said, "A handspan, they shouldn't exceed that."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ بِالنِّسَاءِ؟ قَالَ «يُرْخِينَ شِبْرًا» قُلْتُ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفُ عَنْهُنَّ قَالَ «فَذِرَاعًا لَا يَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ»

When the Prophet [SAW] said what he said about the Izar, Umm Salamah said: "What about women?" He said: "Let it down a hand span." She said: "But then their feet will show." He said: "Then (let it down) a forearm's length, but no more than that." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5338)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لَمَّا ذَكَرَ فِي الْإِزَارِ مَا ذَكَرَ قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَكَيْفَ النِّسَاءُ؟ قَالَ «يُرْخِينَ شِبْرًا» قَالَتْ إِذَنْ تَبْدُو أَقْدَامُهُنَّ قَالَ «فَذِرَاعٌ لَا يَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ»

أَنَّهَا ذَكَرَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذُيُولَ النِّسَاءِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «تُرْخِي شِبْرًا» قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفُ عَنْهَا؟ قَالَ «تُرْخِي ذِرَاعًا لَا تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ»

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about how long a woman’s hem should hang down. He said: ‘A hand span.’ I said: ‘But then (her legs and feet) will be uncovered.’ He said: ‘Then a forearm’s length, but no more than that.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3580)

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَمْ تَجُرُّ الْمَرْأَةَ مِنْ ذَيْلِهَا؟ قَالَ «شِبْرًا» قَالَتْ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفُ عَنْهَا؟ قَالَ «فَذِرَاعٌ لَا تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ»

"ذُيُولُ النِّسَاءِ شِبْرٌ -قيل: إِذَنْ تَبْدُوا أَقْدَامُهُنَّ، قال: فَذِرَاعٌ لَا يَزدْنَ عليهِ".
