ذِكْرُ الْخَبَرِ الْمُدْحِضِ قَوْلَ مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّ أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ السَّبِيعِيَّ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ هَذَا الْخَبَرَ مِنَ الْبَرَاءِ

ibnhibban:42Abū Khalīfah > Abū al-Walīd > Shuʿbah > Abū Isḥāq > al-Barāʾ

[Machine] I heard Al-Bara' saying, when this verse was revealed "Not equal are those believers who sit [at home] and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah," the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Zaid and he came with a shoulder on which it was written. Ibn Umm Maktum complained of his disability's harm, so the verse "not [to be incurred] by those who have incurred [the obligation of] the discharge of a burden" was revealed.  

ابن حبّان:٤٢أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ

When the Divine Inspiration: "Those of the believers who sit (at home), was revealed the Prophet ﷺ sent for Zaid (bin Thabit) who came with a shoulder-blade and wrote on it. Ibn Um-Maktum complained about his blindness and on that the following revelation came: "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury, or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive hard and fight in the Way of Allah with their wealth and lives)." (4.95)

When the Verse:-- "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)" (4.95) was revealed, Allah Apostle called for Zaid who wrote it. In the meantime Ibn Um Maktum came and complained of his blindness, so Allah revealed: "Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame..." etc.) (4.95)

When the Qur'anic verse:" Those who sit (at home) from among mu'min" (iv. 94) was revealed, the son of Umm Maktum spoke to him (the Holy Prophet). (At this). the words:" other than those who have a trouble (illness)" were revealed.

[Machine] He heard Al-Bara'ah saying about this verse: "The believers who sit at home are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ commanded Zaid to write it down, so he brought a shoulder blade and wrote it. Then, Ibn Umm Maktum complained to him about his difficult situation, so the verse was revealed: "The believers who sit at home are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah except for the disabled." (Quran 4:95)

[Machine] "When this verse was revealed, 'Those who stay behind from the believers are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah' [Surah An-Nisa, 4: 95] and 'And those who strive in the cause of Allah' [Surah An-Nisa, 4: 95], the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Zaid and he brought a shoulder blade and wrote it (the verse) down. Then Ibn Umm Maktum came and complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so the verse 'Except for those who are disabled' [Surah An-Nisa, 4: 95] was revealed."

[Machine] When the verse "The believers who stay behind" [Quran 4:95] was revealed, followed by "except for those who are disabled" [Quran 4:95], the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ summoned Zaid and dictated these verses to him. However, Ibn Umm Maktum, who was blind, complained about his own situation. As a result, the verse was revealed again, clarifying that "The believers who stay behind, other than those who are disabled" [Quran 4:95].

Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees.} [Quran 4:95], the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Zaid and he brought a shoulder blade, then the Prophet ﷺ wrote it down. Ibn Umm Maktum, who was blind, complained about its harm, so the verse was revealed {Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives except for the disabled, Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind].} [Quran 4:95].
