Juwayriyyah, daughter of al-Harith ibn al-Mustaliq, fell to the lot of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas, or to her cousin. She entered into an agreement to purchase her freedom. She was a very beautiful woman, most attractive to the eye. Aisha said: She then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him for the purchase of her freedom. When she was standing at the door, I looked at her with disapproval. I realised that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would look at her in the same way that I had looked. She said: Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyyah, daughter of al-Harith, and something has happened to me, which is not hidden from you. I have fallen to the lot of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas, and I have entered into an agreement to purchase of my freedom. I have come to you to seek assistance for the purchase of my freedom. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Are you inclined to that which is better? She asked: What is that, Messenger of Allah? He replied: I shall pay the price of your freedom on your behalf, and I shall marry you. She said: I shall do this. She (Aisha) said: The people then heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had married Juwayriyyah. They released the captives in their possession and set them free, and said: They are the relatives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by marriage. We did not see any woman greater than Juwayriyyah who brought blessings to her people. One hundred families of Banu al-Mustaliq were set free on account of her. Abu dawud said: This evidence shows that a Muslim ruler may marry a slave woman himself.  

عَائِشَةُ ؓ فَجَاءَتْ تَسْأَلُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي كِتَابَتِهَا فَلَمَّا قَامَتْ عَلَى الْبَابِ فَرَأَيْتُهَا كَرِهْتُ مَكَانَهَا وَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَيَرَى مِنْهَا مِثْلَ الَّذِي رَأَيْتُ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ وَإِنَّمَا كَانَ مِنْ أَمْرِي مَا لاَ يَخْفَى عَلَيْكَ وَإِنِّي وَقَعْتُ فِي سَهْمِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ وَإِنِّي كَاتَبْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي فَجِئْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ فِي كِتَابَتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَهَلْ لَكِ إِلَى مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ قَالَتْ وَمَا هُوَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ أُؤَدِّي عَنْكِ كِتَابَتَكِ وَأَتَزَوَّجُكِ قَالَتْ قَدْ فَعَلْتُ قَالَتْ فَتَسَامَعَ تَعْنِي النَّاسَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ تَزَوَّجَ جُوَيْرِيَةَ فَأَرْسَلُوا مَا فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ مِنَ السَّبْىِ فَأَعْتَقُوهُمْ وَقَالُوا أَصْهَارُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَمَا رَأَيْنَا امْرَأَةً كَانَتْ أَعْظَمَ بَرَكَةً عَلَى قَوْمِهَا مِنْهَا أُعْتِقَ فِي سَبَبِهَا مِائَةُ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ مِنْ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ  

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided the captives among the members of the Banu Mustaliq, Juwayriyah bint al-Harith fell to the share of Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas or his cousin. She had written a note to marry herself to him, and she was a beautiful and attractive woman that no one could see without desiring her. So she went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his assistance in this matter. She said, "By Allah, it is only because I saw her at my door that I disliked her, and I knew that he will see from her what I saw, so she entered upon him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyah bint al-Harith, the daughter of the leader of my people, and I have been afflicted with a calamity that you are not unaware of. I fell into the share of Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas or his cousin, so I wrote a note to marry myself to him, and I have come to seek your help in writing it.' He said, 'Do you have anything better than that?' She said, 'And what is it, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'I will fulfill your request and marry you.' She said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'I have done so.' She said, 'The news spread among the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has married Juwayriyah bint al-Harith.' The people said, 'The in-laws of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ have set free one hundred households of the Banu Mustaliq.' I do not know of any woman who was a greater blessing to her people than she."  

لَمَّا قَسَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَبَايَا بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ وَقَعَتْ جُوَيْرِيَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ فِي السَّهْمِ لِثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ الشَّمَّاسِ أَوْ لِابْنِ عَمٍّ لَهُ وَكَاتَبَتْهُ عَلَى نَفْسِهَا وَكَانَتْ امْرَأَةً حُلْوَةً مُلَاحَةً لَا يَرَاهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَخَذَتْ بِنَفْسِهِ فَأَتَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَسْتَعِينُهُ فِي كِتَابَتِهَا قَالَتْ فَوَاللهِ مَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَنْ رَأَيْتُهَا عَلَى بَابِ حُجْرَتِي فَكَرِهْتُهَا وَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيَرَى مِنْهَا مَا رَأَيْتُ فَدَخَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ بِنْتُالْحَارِثِ بْنِ أَبِي ضِرَارٍ سَيِّدِ قَوْمِهِ وَقَدْ أَصَابَنِي مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ مَا لَمْ يَخْفَ عَلَيْكَ فَوَقَعْتُ فِي السَّهْمِ لِثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ الشَّمَّاسِ أَوْ لِابْنِ عَمٍّ لَهُ فَكَاتَبْتُهُ عَلَى نَفْسِي فَجِئْتُكَ أَسْتَعِينُكَ عَلَى كِتَابَتِي قَالَ فَهَلْ لَكِ فِي خَيْرٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَتْ وَمَا هُوَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ أَقْضِي كِتَابَتَكِ وَأَتَزَوَّجُكِ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ قَدْ فَعَلْتُ قَالَتْ وَخَرَجَ الْخَبَرُ إِلَى النَّاسِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَزَوَّجَ جُوَيْرِيَةَ بِنْتَ الْحَارِثِ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ أَصْهَارُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلُوا مَا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ قَالَتْ فَلَقَدْ أَعْتَقَ بِتَزْوِيجِهِ إِيَّاهَا مِائَةَ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ مِنْ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فَمَا أَعْلَمُ امْرَأَةً كَانَتْ أَعْظَمَ بَرَكَةً عَلَى قَوْمِهَا مِنْهَا  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raided the dwellings of the Banu Mustaliq tribe and took one-fifth of their wealth. He then distributed it amongst the people, giving two shares to the horsemen and one share to the foot soldiers. Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar fell under the lot of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas al-Ansari. She was under the guardianship of her cousin Safwan ibn Malik ibn Jadhima, known as Safwan bin Malak. When he was killed, Thabit ibn Qays wrote a document freeing her for nine ounces of gold. She was a very beautiful woman, and whenever anyone saw her, they would be captivated by her beauty. While the Prophet ﷺ was sitting with me, Juwayriyyah came to ask him about her situation. By Allah, I did not see the Prophet ﷺ look at her until I disliked her appearance before him. I knew that he would see in her what I had seen. Juwayriyyah said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith, the daughter of the leader of my people. I was captured and lost my freedom, and I fell to the lot of Thabit ibn Qays, who wrote a document for my freedom for nine ounces of gold." The Prophet ﷺ asked her, "Do you want something better than that?" She asked, "What is it?" He replied, "I will pay off your debt and marry you." She said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then I have done it." The news spread among the people, and they said, "The in-laws of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are taking captives and setting them free. So, free those who are in your hands from among the captives of the Banu Mustaliq." They freed a hundred families as a result of marrying Juwayriyyah. A'isha said, "I do not know of any woman who brought more blessings to her people than Juwayriyyah." This was the end of the events of the Battle of Muraysi.  

أَصَابَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَبَايَا بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فَأَخْرَجَ الْخُمُسَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ قَسَمَهُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَأَعْطَى الْفَارِسَ سَهْمَيْنِ وَالرَّاجِلَ سَهْمًا فَوَقَعَتْ جُوَيْرِيَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ أَبِي ضِرَارٍ فِي سَهْمِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ وَكَانَتْ تَحْتَ ابْنِ عَمٍّ لَهَا يُقَالُ لَهُ صَفْوَانُ بْنُ مَالِكِ بْنِ جَذِيمَةَ فَقُتِلَ عَنْهَا فَكَاتَبَهَا ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَلَى نَفْسِهَا عَلَى تِسْعِ أَوَاقٍ وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَةً حُلْوَةً لَا يَكَادُ يَرَاهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَخَذَتْ بِنَفْسِهِ فَبَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عِنْدِي إِذْ دَخَلَتْ جُوَيْرِيَةُ تَسْأَلُهُ فِي كِتَابَتِهَا فَوَاللَّهِ مَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَنْ رَأَيْتُهَا حَتَّى كَرِهْتُ دُخُولَهَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَعَرَفْتُ أَنْ سَيَرَى فِيهَا مِثْلَ الَّذِي رَأَيْتُ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ سَيِّدِ قَوْمِهِ وَقَدْ أَصَابَنِي مِنَ الْأَمْرِ مَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَ فَوَقَعْتُ فِي سَهْمِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ فَكَاتَبَنِي عَلَى تِسْعِ أَوَاقٍ فِي فِكَاكِيِ فَقَالَ «أَوَ خَيْرًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ» قَالَتْ مَا هُوَ؟ قَالَ «أُؤَدِّي عَنْكِ كِتَابَتَكِ وَأَتَزَوَّجُكِ» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «فَقَدْ فَعَلْتُ» فَخَرَجَ الْخَبَرُ إِلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالُوا أَصْهَارُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُسْتَرَقُّونَ فَأَعْتَقُوا مَنْ كَانَ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ مِنْ سَبْيِ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فَبَلَغَ عِتْقُهُمْ مِائَةَ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ بِتَزَوُّجِهِ إِيَّاهَا قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَلَا أَعْلَمُ امْرَأَةً كَانَتْ أَعْظَمَ بَرَكَةً عَلَى قَوْمِهَا مِنْهَا وَذَلِكَ مُنْصَرَفَهُ مِنْ غَزْوَةِ الْمُرَيْسِيعِ  

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ captured the prisoners of Banu al-Mustaliq, Juwayriyah bint al-Harith fell into the portion of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammash or his cousin. She wrote a contract for her freedom and she was a very beautiful woman whom hardly anyone could resist. She went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his assistance in the matter. By Allah, it was not long before she stood by the door of his room and I disliked her for that, and I knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would see in her what I saw. Juwayriyah said, "O Messenger of Allah, there is something you may not know about, so I wrote a contract for myself and came to you seeking your help." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Is there anything better than that?" She asked, "What is it?" He replied, "I will marry you and pay off your contract." She said, "Yes." He said, "I have done so." When the news reached the Muslims, they said, "The Messenger of Allah's in-laws" and they immediately released the prisoners they had from Banu al-Mustaliq. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ indeed emancipated a hundred families of Banu al-Mustaliq through marrying Juwayriyah. She said, "I do not know of any woman who brought greater blessing to her people than me."  

لَمَّا سَبَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَبَايَا بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ وَقَعَتْ جُوَيْرِيَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ فِي سَهْمٍ لِثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ أَوْ لِابْنِ عَمِّهِ فَكَاتَبَتْ عَلَى نَفْسِهَا وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَةً حُلْوَةً لَا يَكَادُ يَرَاهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَخَذَتْ بِنَفْسِهِ فَأَتَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَسْتَعِينُهُ فِي كِتَابَتِهَا فَوَاللَّهِ مَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَنْ وَقَفَتْ عَلَى بَابِ الْحُجْرَةِ فَرَأَيْتُهَا كَرِهْتُهَا وَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَيَرَى مِنْهَا مَا رَأَيْتُ فَقَالَتْ جُوَيْرِيَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَانَ مِنَ الْأَمْرِ مَا قَدْ عَرَفْتَ فَكَاتَبْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي فَجِئْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَسْتَعِينُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَوَ مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ؟ » فَقَالَتْ وَمَا هُوَ؟ فَقَالَ «أَتَزَوَّجُكِ وَأَقْضِي عَنْكِ كِتَابَتَكِ» فَقَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ «قَدْ فَعَلْتُ» فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ذَلِكَ قَالُوا أَصْهَارُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلُوا مَا كَانَ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ مِنْ سَبَايَا بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فَلَقَدْ عُتِقَ بِتَزْوِيجِهِ مِائَةُ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ مِنْ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ قَالَتْ «فَمَا أَعْلَمُ امْرَأَةً كَانَتْ أَعْظَمَ بَرَكَةً عَلَى قَوْمِهَا مِنْهَا» *  

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided the captives from the sons of Mustalaq, Juwayriyah bint al-Harith fell to the lot of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammass or the son of an uncle of his (i.e., one he treated like an uncle). She told him to write a contract of manumission for herself. She was a beautiful and graceful woman, not easy to be seen by anyone without taking his breath away. She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking for his help in writing the contract. Aisha said: "I swear by Allah, I did not like her when I saw her, for I thought that he would see in her what I saw. But when she spoke to him, she said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyah bint al-Harith, and I have been afflicted with something that you know, and I have written a contract of manumission for myself, so help me in fulfilling it.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Shall I do something better than that for you? I will pay off your contract for you and marry you.' She said: 'Yes.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did that, and the people heard that he had married her, so they said: 'The in-laws of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So they gave a hundred families of the sons of Mustalaq their freedom. I do not know of any woman who brought more blessing to her people than her."  

لَمَّا قَسَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَبَايَا بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ وَقَعَتْ جُوَيْرِيَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ فِي السَّهْمِ لِثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ أَوْ لِابْنِ عَمٍّ لَهُ فَكَاتَبَتْهُ عَلَى نَفْسِهَا وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَةً حُلْوَةً مُلَاحَةً لَا يَرَاهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَخَذَتْ بِنَفْسِهِ فَأَتَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَسْتَعِينُهُ فِي كِتَابَتِهَا قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَوَاللهِ مَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَنْ رَأَيْتُهَا فَكَرِهْتُهَا وَقُلْتُ سَيَرَى مِنْهَا مِثْلَمَا رَأَيْتُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَتْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ سَيِّدِ قَوْمِهِ وَقَدْ أَصَابَنِي مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ مَا لَمْ يَخْفَ عَلَيْكَ وَقَدْ كَاتَبْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي فَأَعِنِّي عَلَى كِتَابَتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ أُؤَدِّي عَنْكِ كِتَابَتَكِ وَأَتَزَوَّجُكِ؟ فَقَالَتْ نَعَمْ فَفَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَبَلَغَ النَّاسَ أَنَّهُ قَدْ تَزَوَّجَهَا فَقَالُوا أَصْهَارُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلُوا مَا كَانَ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ مِنْ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فَلَقَدْ أُعْتِقَ بِهَا مِائَةُ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ مِنْ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فَمَا أَعْلَمُ امْرَأَةً أَعْظَمَ بَرَكَةً مِنْهَا عَلَى قَوْمِهَا
