The Prophet ﷺ passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave. He told her: "Fear Allah and be patient." She said to him, "Go away, for you have not been afflicted with a calamity like mine." And she did not recognize him. Then she was informed that he was the Prophet ﷺ . so she went to the house of the Prophet ﷺ and there she did not find any guard. Then she said to him, "I did not recognize you." He said, "Verily, true patience is ˹showing it˺ at the first stroke of a calamity."

مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِامْرَأَةٍ تَبْكِي عِنْدَ قَبْرٍ فَقَالَ: «اتَّقِي اللَّهَ وَاصْبِرِي»، قَالَتْ: إِلَيْكَ عَنِّي، فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَبْ بِمُصِيبَتِي، وَلَمْ تَعْرِفْهُ۔ فَقِيلَ لَهَا: إِنَّهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، فَأَتَتْ باب النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عِنْدَهُ بَوَّابِينَ، فَقَالَتْ: لَمْ أَعْرِفْكَ، فَقَالَ: «إِنَّمَا الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى».

Anas bin Malik said to a woman of his family, "Do you know such-and-such a woman?" She replied, "Yes." He said, "The Prophet ﷺ passed by her while she was weeping over a grave, and he said to her, 'Be afraid of Allah and be patient.' The woman said (to the Prophet). 'Go away from me, for you do not know my calamity.'" Anas added, "The Prophet ﷺ left her and proceeded. A man passed by her and asked her, 'What has Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you?' She replied, 'I did not recognize him.' The man said, 'He was Messenger of Allah ﷺ."' Anas added, "So that woman came to the gate of the Prophet ﷺ and she did not find a gate-keeper there, and she said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Allah. I did not recognize you!' The Prophet said, 'No doubt, patience is at the first stroke of a calamity.'"

لاِمْرَأَةٍ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ تَعْرِفِينَ فُلاَنَةَ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَرَّ بِهَا وَهْىَ تَبْكِي عِنْدَ قَبْرٍ فَقَالَ اتَّقِي اللَّهَ وَاصْبِرِي فَقَالَتْ إِلَيْكَ عَنِّي فَإِنَّكَ خِلْوٌ مِنْ مُصِيبَتِي قَالَ فَجَاوَزَهَا وَمَضَى فَمَرَّ بِهَا رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ مَا قَالَ لَكِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ مَا عَرَفْتُهُ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَجَاءَتْ إِلَى بَابِهِ فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عَلَيْهِ بَوَّابًا فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ مَا عَرَفْتُكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنَّ الصَّبْرَ عِنْدَ أَوَّلِ صَدْمَةٍ

Fear Allah and show endurance. She (not recognising him) said: You have not been afflicted as I have been. When he (the Holy Prophet) had departed, it was said to her that he was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she was mortally shocked. She came to his door and she did not find doorkeepers at his door. She said: Messenger of Allah. I did not recognise you. He said: Endurance is to be shown at first blow, or at the first blow.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَتَى عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ تَبْكِي عَلَى صَبِيٍّ لَهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا اتَّقِي اللَّهَ وَاصْبِرِي فَقَالَتْ وَمَا تُبَالِي بِمُصِيبَتِي فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ قِيلَ لَهَا إِنَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذَهَا مِثْلُ الْمَوْتِ فَأَتَتْ بَابَهُ فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عَلَى بَابِهِ بَوَّابِينَ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَمْ أَعْرِفْكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ أَوَّلِ صَدْمَةٍ أَوْ قَالَ عِنْدَ أَوَّلِ الصَّدْمَةِ

The Prophet ﷺ came upon a woman who was weeping for her child. He said to her: Fear Allah and have patience. She said: What have you to do with my calamity ? She was then told that he was the Prophet ﷺ. She, therefore, came to him. She did not find doorkeepers at his gate. She said: I did not recognize you, Messenger of Allah. He said: Endurance is shown only at a first blow.

أَتَى نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ تَبْكِي عَلَى صَبِيٍّ لَهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا اتَّقِي اللَّهَ وَاصْبِرِي فَقَالَتْ وَمَا تُبَالِي أَنْتَ بِمُصِيبَتِي فَقِيلَ لَهَا هَذَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَتَتْهُ فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عَلَى بَابِهِ بَوَّابِينَ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَمْ أَعْرِفْكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى أَوْ عِنْدَ أَوَّلِ صَدْمَةٍ

[AI] I heard Anas saying to a woman from his tribe, "Do you know so-and-so? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by her while she was crying on a grave, so he said to her, 'Fear Allah and be patient.' She replied, 'Leave me alone, for you do not care about my calamity.' He said, 'But I do not know you.' Then it was said to her, 'Indeed, he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' So she grabbed him like a person who had been resurrected from death and came to his door, but she did not find a doorkeeper there. She said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I did not recognize you.' He said, 'Indeed, patience is at the first shock.'"

سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا يَقُولُ لِامْرَأَةٍ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ أَتَعْرِفِينَ فُلَانَةَ؟ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِهَا وَهِيَ تَبْكِي عَلَى قَبْرٍ فَقَالَ لَهَا اتَّقِي اللهَ وَاصْبِرِي فَقَالَتْ لَهُ إِلَيْكَ عَنِّي فَإِنَّكَ لَا تُبَالِي بِمُصِيبَتِي قَالَ وَلَمْ تَكُنْ عَرَفَتْهُ فَقِيلَ لَهَا إِنَّهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذَهَا مِثْلُ الْمَوْتِ فَجَاءَتْ إِلَى بَابِهِ فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عَلَيْهِ بَوَّابًا فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي لَمْ أَعْرِفْكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الصَّبْرَ عِنْدَ أَوَّلِ صَدْمَةٍ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِقَبْرٍ عِنْدَهُ امْرَأَةٌ تَبْكِي فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اتَّقِي اللهَ وَاصْبِرِي» قَالَتْ وَأَنْتَ مَا تُبَالِي مُصِيبَتِي فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَهَا قِيلَ لَهَا هَذَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذَهَا شِبْهُ الْمَوْتِ فَأَتَتْهُ فَإِذَا لَيْسَ دُونَهُ بَوَّابٌ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَإِنِّي أَصْبِرُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الْأُولَى»
